Second build big the AMT Death Star. This time I add a scratch built trench and improve on paint job and lightning.

@@EagleSciFiModeler I thought Spencer's Gifts or Ikea sold a Death Star light a few years back... "Disco Ball" is the other obvious use for a Death Star light...

Great job on this version 2!! The trench is awesome. And nice work with the green crystal in the super laser. I’m definitely still loving my original though

Thanks! I'm glad you're still enjoying yours. I learned a lot building yours and I'm willing to take more risks building my own.

You did a nice job with this, Rusty. I think adding some window maker on the inside would take it to another level entirely. You could even 'cheat' and use some diffuser around the LED post, and probably get the same effect. Having only the tiny Bandai kit, I'm sorely tempted to scratch build one, as I have some spheres about this size.

I'll eventually fill the windows, I'm just ready to move on to a different project.

That does look really great indeed. I am actually a bit surprised, that this AMT kit can look so nice'

I watched another model builder video today about this model and his wasn't near as good as this one. At a distance it looks okay but it won't stand up to close scrutiny like this one will.

So far,so good. Do need to paint inside of the planet gun, if you look at some the frames, and the painting too. Your North Pole of the Death Star looks plain too.

One day I'll work more on it. It's been on the bench for months and I've been more interested in working on other projects.

I really need that plastic model, where can i buy the base? Any tips? I can only find the Bandai Death Star 2 which is way too small for me and your size looks perfect!
@EagleSciFiModeler2 жыл бұрын
eBay is the best place to find them.

Do you think Round2 is going to re-pop it now, and if so any changes?
@EagleSciFiModeler Жыл бұрын
I don't think they will, it's a bad model and just needs to be completely redone.

I'm writing this before seeing the video and already from the preview pic I can see the model looks MUCH better with the trench. I think it's a notable step-up from the last build. I think the lighting is still an issue because of the scale, they just don't make fiber optics small enough for the scale, BUT this sow's ear of a model definitely looks better with what you added. It's getting into mildly nice territory which is saying a lot considering what was started out with in this kit. I think the other AMT vehicle models and the Vader vinyl figure are better (and I do like the Vader figure; it's better than I expected) but wow does this look better with customization. I STILL wouldn't buy the original kit at the inflated prices, though. I don't think anyone will try a new, larger scale or at least better-detailed version because Disney ruined Star Wars and absolutely devastated the retail market for the franchise. Obviously, there are still hardcore Star Wars modelers but I'm noticing hardly anyone is touching Star Wars model kits that aren't from the Original Trilogy. That confirms the widely-held hypothesis by many in fandom that the more faithful fans will only buy merchandise tied into films and TV shows that they actually love!

I take it back on the lighting after watching most of the video... When you rotate that model, it actually looks very nice. If it COULD be rotated safely (without screwing up the lighting system), that might be the way to display this but boy does that trench add something to it. It really missed that detail. I think I like the lighting pattern on this pass of the model better, too.

Yeah, the holes were about as small as I could get them. Once I fill them they may appear a bit smaller. It's a terrible kit but I'm pretty happy with this one.

@@EagleSciFiModeler It came out nicely, again. The other try wasn't a bad result but this one is better with the trench detail and light patterning.

I have the two hemispheres in the stash, primed ,but I don't like the blocky surface texture 😥👍
@EagleSciFiModeler3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just used the surface detail to keep my windows straight. I masked off my own pattern for painting.

Broken drill bits! Don't I appreciate that! I'm amazed I never broke more than ONE drill bit in my set but I haven't tried to drill hundreds of holes, either. Those small bits are incredibly fragile. They were not made to last for that long, especially when drilling through denser plastic. Plastic is worse sometimes than the materials they make walls from. (Which I've also had to drill through to install replacement blinders for my windows. It's always a pain to upgrade and replace hardware in a dwelling that you're the second or third owner of.) Unless you do more esoteric hobby work, you don't have an appreciation what people go through to upgrade and finish things. Plastics are harder to work with than what most people understand... It's art -- it's not science. Trial and error, and you muddle through suggestions made online and half the tips work, half don't depending on your situation!
