Our Amtrak Bedroom Tour Viewliner II shows off our favorite Amtrak Sleeper Car room. We rode in a Silver Meteor Bedroom out of Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. This same room can also be found on the Silver Star, The Autotrain, Texas Eagle, City of New Orleans and several other Amtrak routes. This is our favorite setup because you'll get a great room with an en suite bathroom plus your meals are included.

We just got off a Viewliner II last week. I spent most the time on the upper bunk of the bedroom since much of our travel was at night. One thing I learned bring one of those car cup holders that attach to the car door. You can hook it on the edge and not be hunting it down or climbing every time you want a sip.

Brings back memories when I was a kid. Every year after Thanksgiving We’d go stay with my brother in Colorado. So we’d take the train from Los Angeles Union Station. Sometimes we’d go up to San Francisco and then to Salt Lake City then get on the Sante Fe to Glenwood Springs Colorado. But we always got the sleeper cars on Amtrak. When I was a kid I’d sleep on top and my parents got the bottom. When I was older I got my own room. Now this was the late 70’s and the last time was 1983. No showers in the room then, haha. That would have been nice. Love the room tour!

Best thing I ever did was take trains all around the US for about a year in my 20’s. Only reason I was able to do so was I had a bad accident, had my surgery, recovered, got my settlement and wasn’t back to work yet so I took Amtrak everywhere for a whole year. Thats a once in a lifetime opportunity, that regular guy like me never get. I met the best people and crashed on their couches. I rarely needed a hotel room. Great experience.

let me tell you a story.. about 2 weeks ago, my mom and I flew to Vegas. I passed out on the plane and was having trouble breathing when I came to. (first time going on a plane) and it was the WORST experience ever. When we landed in Vegas, guess what? We took an uber to get our rental car and our rental car was not 'ready', come to find out there were never any cars to begin with. So we walked from the rental place to the Strat (we did not want to pay for another uber). Well, we decided to not take the plane to come home, so I looked up Amtrak videos on youtube and found you!!! you gave me the confidence to take the amtrak, it was a smooth ride too. I always thought trains went super fast lol but no, it was awesome. My mom and I will be taking the Amtrak from now on!

Great video on the bedroom, I’ve been to Florida four times since August and I took the roomette being by myself it was very comfortable, for two people it would be a little tight, the bedroom obviously is a lot bigger and I do like the bathroom you have to yourself, they’re still running old cars that have a toilet in the roomette if you’re lucky enough to get that, I did twice, not the cheapest way to travel but I’m fond of the ground, thanks again for the video

I haven't been in a Viewliner II Bedroom yet, but the design is almost the same as Viewliner I's. They could have added another outlet, preferably towards the windows with an additional one for the upper berth. I think there are 3/4 length mirrors on the adjoining doors in Viewliner I bedrooms, I didn't see any (besides the vanity mirror) in your room. I know they are in all Superliner Bedrooms. Too bad there are only 2 Bedrooms (not counting the accessible BR) in Viewliner cars- opposed to 5 upstairs in Superliner Sleepers. In Viewliner I's, it was a tight squeeze getting in & out of the bathroom at night, so I needed to fold the opposing chair up for easier access. These rooms are pricey, but they offer the most in comfort & privacy.

Nice review! I've traveled aboard the Viewliner I, both in roomette and bedroom, and I love the Viewliner design. I haven't been on the new ones yet but based on what I've seen I think the Viewliner II is just about perfect - better interior colors, nice lighting and hvac control updates, and for the roomette accommodations I prefer the public toilets vs the in-room toilet of the Viewliner I design.

@@GroundedLifeTravel Sure. It's fun watching. Just think if those trains could be run a lot faster, say like 135 to 150 mph, if not faster, rail travel would be a lot more popular in much of the country. That said, I would still love to ride an AMTRAK someday. Not much service where I live. Plus it's in the wee hours. Again, thanks for sharing and keep em coming.

If you want to stop over somewhere in the middle of a route, the next leg is a different ticket altogether. The USA Rail pass is one way around this, but it's only good in Coach. Which is fine if you don't mind sleeping in coach or are making a bunch of trips during the day.
@GroundedLifeTravel
@GroundedLifeTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you get off to stay at a hotel, you'll need another ticket for the next day, which can add some expense. We usually ride the routes from start to finish and stay in hotels on either end.

The Amtrak tickets are so ridiculously expensive, especially for those trips. I priced it from MSO to SEA and it was $2800 one way. By careful planning you cat get a business class airfare on Singapore Airlines for just a fraction more. But there is absolutely no comparison to the Amtrak, I mean Amtrak looks and feels dinosaurian... would love to ride it but ther eis no way I would pay those fare. We've been watching videos about the Sunset Limited, NOLA-LA. It appears that no station has a platform level with passenger car doors. To get on and off the passenger uses a yellow stool. Neither of us uses a wheelchair, so we wonder about how steady the yellow stool is and how wide is the gap to the car? Are there any mechanical lifts (AKA, "dumb waiters") to move roller bags between levels? The stairs look narrow, steep, and twisting without landings. How does someone needing to use both hands to go up and down the stairs move bags? If we depend on Amtrak attendants for moving bags and delivering meals to rooms, then what is a proper tip?
@GroundedLifeTravel
@GroundedLifeTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stairs are quite steep and narrow if you have mobility issues. You could request to be on the lower level in a roomette, family bedroom or accessible bedroom. Then the luggage is stored below and meals are delivered to you. Probably for extra care a tip of $10-15 per person per night is normal. There is a ramp that they use for wheelchairs, but no motorized lift.

No, the family bedroom is only on a Superliner train, and sleeps 4 people instead of 2, but has not bathroom in it.

@@GroundedLifeTravel Thank you …I am needing a bottom floor room with two lower beds 🛌 at my age I am not climbing up to any penthouse 😆 and the DH’s ambulatory but a single leg below amputee. What is your suggestion on a type of room to book?? Happy Happy New Year Y’all 🥂🍾🎉🎆🥂

@@stephaniefoley5569 - stairs can be an unfortunate fact of life for those struggling with a physical disability. Unfortunately the Superliner restaurant and viewing lounge are both located on the upper level. You may find getting on and off the train equally daunting if using intermediate stops. In your case you may be better advised to fly.

@@nocturn791 thank you 😊 for your information…we have done short trips to NOLA on the Crescent with no issues but have never done overnights with a room. Our future plans are to fly into Chicago Midway to catch the SW Chief to Flagstaff. Do you happen to know what type of train it happens to be?? Thank you 😊

how do you get the viewliner II? I did not see that option on the Amtrak website
@chrisdobrowolski2783
@chrisdobrowolski2783 Жыл бұрын
It luck of the draw, you will either get Viewliner I or Viewliner II cars or a combination of both cars on the train. The viewliners I only have a toilet next to your seat and no bathrooms in the hallway but viewliner II have no toliet in the room but in the hallway and both of those rooms have sinks. Once you get on if you get on the viewliner 1 and wanted a viewliner II or vice versa, you might be able to ask if someone will switch with you, that usually works at the start of the line but that would only work if there is a viewliner 1 and II on your train. Sometimes there is not an option since it can be all viewliners 1 cars or all viewliner II cars. The emplyees do not even know which cars they have till they board that train.

Stayed 3nights from Chicago to Lax on Texas Chief. It was the most horrible noisy bumpy loud horn every 2-3 minutes. Could not sleep worth a damn. Employees were none existent in the bedroom cars. Spent 2300 dollars on a trip from hell. Never again Amtrak rip off. This was Oct 19 , 2021. It's the worst trip I ever experienced.
