The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.
--3 states
--1,377 miles
--36 hours
--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. 🤣
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a "Lounge Car" featured in this video, not an actual "Parlour Car." I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the "Parlour Car," and I was at fault for "following the flock" in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that "There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here."

Hello there, my wife and I are from Chile, we have gone twice to travel in the US and both times we have taken a ride in the train. The New Orleans - New York ride was 31 hours of pure sightseeing, fun and joy. I wish we had a rail system here as you have yours. We also went Chicago - New York on our first trip and even the 8 hour delay due to snow did not take us down from taking the ride again.

I'm so glad you did that while you were here, Andres. We love having people come and see our beautiful country outside of the big cities. Your country is one I've hoped to visit - had lovely friends from Valparaiso! Come again if you can and see more. Besos y abrazos.

@JB GTO Thank you for watching my video. It was about $970 for two adults. If you'd like to travel the whole length of the Coast Starlight, then on Amtrak's site, select either L.A.'s Union Station or Seattle's King Street Station as your origin and then select the other as your destination. Be sure you select Coast Starlight, then select "Rooms starting at $___," and select the Bedroom. To illustrate: Here's a link where I selected departing from L.A. on October 2, traveling to Seattle. (Coast Starlight 14 is listed at top.) The Bedroom shows $967, for two adults. Your meals and station lounge access are included. www.amtrak.com/tickets/departure.html Hope this helps.

The dinners are fantastic on Amtrak. My son and I always get the sleeper car for 4 for extra room and get our own bathroom. Showering while moving is an art that takes a lot of work. We have traveled around the US and Canada twice.

This was nicely presented, thank you. For others, there are some downsides too, look into it thoroughly, but overall, it is quite a deal, in my opinion. The big deal, to me, is that the person who normally drives the automobile, can actually sit back and enjoy the view, also that you can get up and walk around anytime you like, big bay windows, sipping your coffee and talking with people, and no matter the weather, you are secure and comfortable and tons of rooms.

In the growing KZfaq environment, where people are filming and editing at practically professional grade levels, I can appreciate how rudimentary my content is, and apparently, amusingly pathetic to some. So, I dearly appreciate those who visit my little corner of YT, taking a moment to "sit with me" as I humbly share my chronicles. Originally, these images and clips were intended for personal/private use, only; it was after the journey that I decided to share them, here. I thank those who have watched this video, those who have "liked" it, and who have taken the time to leave kind and helpful comments. Thank you for your patience as I learn and evolve as a channel.

I LOVE the Coast Starlight very much! I have ridden on Amtrak long distance trains a number of times and I love it because sleeping on the train is fun, plus the beautiful scenery! One time, I actually observed a live birth take place on the train, I’m not joking. Back in late March 2019, I was riding the California Zephyr from Davis to Glenwood Springs and on the train, there was pregnant 19 year old girl from SFSU traveling from Emeryville to Denver with her boyfriend. They normally fly home from college for holidays/breaks but because their due date was close (due date was April 5th and they departed on March 29th), they had to use the train since airlines do not allow women to fly in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. During the ride at 1 AM, the girl’s water broke and the attendant for our sleeping car (Justin Woods, a young guy in his early 20s based in Chicago) volunteered to deliver the baby since he had seen how it was done online before. The girl agreed and Justin did so in which he went into the first aid kit, got his gloves on, then squeezed himself into the roomette to have the girl push while he caught the baby when she was born. The baby ended up being born on the train - a healthy baby girl in a ROOMETTE!!! It was a fabulous story and the girl, her newborn and boyfriend were taken off the train by paramedics at the next railroad crossing. The train was in a remote location between Elko and Salt Lake City at the moment which required a helicopter to meet the train and have her airlifted to the nearest hospital which was more than an hour away (an ambulance can’t drive more than 30 minutes away from it’s base and SLC would take longer than that, so they used a helicopter). As it is, I observed the whole thing as I was holding the girl’s left leg as well as recording this with her boyfriend’s phone. I’ve wondered - if you are female, suppose this happened to you where you (or your wife/girlfriend) suddenly went into labor on an Amtrak train and the train was going across a remote location at the moment. Would you at all be able to tolerate giving birth unmediated, while crammed into a Roomette, on a bed that was not flexible (unlike in the hospital), on a train that speeding up to 90 MPH, the baby’s umbilical cord having to stay attached to you until you got to a hospital (no scissors/clamps on the train), and the person delivering your baby is an Amtrak conductor/attendant with no medical training or license of any kind??? Seriously, this girl was incredibly brave and was lucky that there were no complications, PLUS it only took 20 minutes for her to push the baby out (water broke at 1 AM, and the baby was born at 1:22 AM) What do you think of all this!!!???

a dude I took a trip from Los Angeles to Texas by rail. I was super excited to go. There were a bunch of weirdos on the train. Maybe it’s because it originated in Los Angeles but there were many mentally ill people on that train. Now, am I critiquing people who want to travel by train? No, not at all. I say go on adventure! I’m just saying that be careful of smelly weirdos who might be going your way. I apologize if it came off wrong. My intention is to let people know that train occupants aren’t always the best people.

Amtrak's Coast Starlight is their only train that has Pacific Parlour lounge cars. The 'Parlour' car shown in the video is a standard Amtrak Superliner Sightseer Lounge (SSL) car, NOT a Pacific Parlour car. Amtrak occasionally needs to take a Pacific Parlour car out of service for maintenance and substitutes a regular Superliner SSL car. The Pacific Parlour cars are restored Budd Hi-Level lounge cars and Amtrak only has 5 of them. Budd only built 6 of the cars. The Budd Hi-Level cars first appeared in 1952 on the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe's all coach El Capitan train that ran between Chicago and LA.

Beautiful video. I’ve done roomettes on the Coast Starlight, but not yet a bedroom. I don’t think I want to go my whole life being too thrifty to do it. Being self-contained, the bedrooms are like miniature hotel rooms. Anyone who has to make frequent trips to the restroom would find the en-suite feature particularly nice. A shower 🚿 en-suite vs. in-car doesn’t rank terribly high on my list, but a double bed 🛌 seems like a dream. When considering the cost of a sleeping car, you also have to factor in the cost of meals 🥘 in the dining car, and the cost of a hotel room 🏨. The more subjective element is roomette vs. bedroom. It certainly is roomier for two travelers.

I just completed a trip from San Diego to Portland yesterday. I took my granddaughter on an excursion for her graduation from high school. We were disappointed at the accommodations and lack of cleanliness. The bathrooms stunk so bad we could barely use them. These bathrooms were gross and I am not exaggerating! Windows were dirty...which is the whole point of traveling by train! It was pretty much an inner city bad bus experience by rail. Never again!!

Oh, no...I am so sorry to hear of your experience. How disappointing it must have been, especially since it was planned as a commemorative trip. Though my own experience on board was vastly different, I, myself, am disappointed for you, that you were unable to create a smile-inducing memory with your grandchild. Congratulations to your granddaughter on her graduation. May you two share a more worthy experience, together, in the future. I thank you for watching my video.

If I could afford one of the 'bedrooms' (which are insanely expensive) I would never leave the room. Just have them bring the meals to the room (or bring my own food). I'd be happy to be able to afford a 'roommette'.

We definitely enjoyed being able to relax within the privacy of our room. Indeed, traveling in the sleeper car is quite an indulgence, and quite a singular experience. It had been lingering on my "list" since I was a child; I'm so grateful, so humbled, that I was finally able to do it. Truly, how lovely it would be if all could experience, if only once, traveling in such a way.

Indeed. We were able to transfer our various outside accumulated reward points to Amtrak, to offset the cost, too. (Some rewards programs, e.g. credit cards, hotel rewards programs, etc, are transferable to an Amtrak account, which can then be used to fund a train trip.)

My issue with AMTRAK is that if I want to go to FL I need to go 4 hours to a train location, travel 8 hours to Chicago spend the day there, then spend 2 days going to FL. 1/2 of a weeks vacation spent on the train. There has to be a way for other major cities to be involved.

Hello, everyone. Due to the new policies issued by KZfaq, this week, this channel is scheduled to be demonetized at the end of February, unless it can reach 1,000 subscribers. While I make videos for the pleasure of it, both as a creative outlet and as a way to share some of my chronicles, every little bit of income is, of course, helpful. I have appreciated those who have opted to join me, already; I would greatly appreciate and welcome new subscribers. I aim to continue evolving and growing as a channel. Very good job on the video. Thank you for posting it. One question: How much room for storage is there under the sofa? How high and how deep?
@ExtantChronicles
@ExtantChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, very much. I don't recall being able to stow anything considerable--except for very slim items and a few water bottles--underneath the sofa, due to its bed-retracting mechanism, so I am unable to provide dimensions for underneath the sofa. However, the soft brown weekender bag you see at 1:16 and 1:50 measures 26"L x 14"H x 11"W; it fit nicely underneath the chair--as seen at 1:16--and was not an obstruction to the space, or to closing the bathroom door. (Edited here to add comment about the bathroom door. Additionally, more than one carry-on luggage piece could impede the space in the room, making it a challenge to access the bathroom.) The seat on this chair folds up, in order to place large items, so if you don't need the chair, you could place larger items there, though you'd have to move them, if you wanted to use the seat, obviously. Above the chair, there is a shelf (seen at 2:02) but I wouldn't use it to store heavy/bulky items that could fall onto you. Our larger suitcases were checked at the train station, not to be seen again until disembarkation, so I'd recommend keeping needed items, only, and a change of clothes with you in the room. If you are traveling with oversized carry-on bags, and you don't check them, you might request to store them below your room, as seen in 1:24, where Roomette passengers store items, too, for easy access. Otherwise, we stored our bags under the room's chair, or under the retractable table--which creates a makeshift footstool--or in the super-slim closet (seen at 2:13) which would be only suitable to hang coats, purses, or slim shopping bags. I would check whatever luggage/items you can at the train station and take only the bare necessities with you into your room to avoid overcrowding the space, which I will do, myself, if I have the opportunity to take this trip again. I hope this information helps you.

Great video. We will be travelling Los Angeles to Portland in December. Are the sleepers on both sides of the train...meaning is there a choice if we want to be on the ocean side?
@ExtantChronicles
@ExtantChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, so much! I hope you have a grand time! If you are traveling in a "Bedroom," as opposed to the other sleeper passenger option of "Roomette," and are traveling northbound, then your room should face the ocean by default. (Unless Amtrak changes out varying cars; I'd confirm with them.) You will note in the video, the hallway to the Bedrooms (0:51 and 1:44) show the rooms are indeed on the west-facing/ocean-facing side of the car, as we traveled north. Roomette Passengers would need to try to request a west-facing/coast-facing reservation, since they are found on either side of the car (0:46 and 2:50). Also, if one is traveling southbound, on this train, then all Bedrooms, it appears, would then face east, in opposition to the ocean. Therefore, to anyone seeking to experience the Coast Starlight for itself, as a sleeper passenger, specifically in a Bedroom, I would opt for the northern route.

how was the shower,did it leak out to carpet,did it ruin toilet paper in holder?door rattles?speaker for announcements working?upper berth support bars rattle? reason I ask is we had these problems last year.
@ExtantChronicles
@ExtantChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear of your ill experience during your trip. How unfortunate, truly. The shower was fine, for us; it did not leak out onto the room's floor, through its door gasket. We removed the toilet paper while showering, in order to prevent it from getting wet. We did not experience any door rattling, from the bathroom door or the cabin door. (If one did experience rattling, I would suggest putting a kleenex, or etc, in the space of the door latch and its connection, as seen in 2:38.) We did not have any problems with the speakers within our room working. As I recall, upon asking, we were able to adjust the speakers within the room, if we wanted to take a nap, for example. I can't remember, though, where the knob/switch was; it might be in 2:13. The announcements continued in the hallway but were not disruptive, for us. I, myself, slept on the upper berth and did not notice any rattling, either from the supports, the ladder, or the straps. It was a sound, peaceful sleep.

My husband and I are planning a trip in the fall, from Toledo OH, taking southwest Chief to California, then Coast Starlight to Portland Oregon. Our trip back, will be the Empire Builder from Portland Oregon back to Toledo. We'll be staying in a Deluxe room the whole way, except the 4 hr trip from Toledo to Chicago and than of course, from Chicago to Toledo. I have traveled by train many times, he has not. I took many train trips from Southern California to Northern California as a child. It was about a 7 hour ride. Always way to short for me, I never wanted to get off. I took a one way trip with my 4 yr old son in 1998 from Portland to Pittsburgh when we moved, he was a complete angel until the last 30 min getting into Pittsburgh. He got super antsy and wanted off! (Who could blame him at that point) We had coach seats! WHAT WAS I THINKING! Never again for a trip that long. I can not wait to experience a more comfortable trip with my husband this time. :) Thank you very much for sharing your video, I have been watching them for weeks now. Ever since we decided to take this trip. It's so relaxing! Any tips for rail riding, please let me know :)

Wow! What an amazing trip you have coming! I smiled while reading your comment, imagining such a journey, especially during fall color season...I'm so happy for you! Have a marvelous time! Reading your experience with trains, it sounds as though you'd have more advice to offer me than I could offer to you. I would only suggest to you a note of hindsight I have for myself: less is more in the room. I would've checked one of our carry-ons, at least, putting what we needed into one bag, e.g. toiletries, preferred snacks that aren't offered on-board, pajamas, fresh clothing, desired electronics, book, etc., in order to preserve a more spacious feel in the room, by avoiding clutter. Thank you for the kind words, and for watching.

It's not, "the preferences of landscape perspective, instead of portrait, in the KZfaq community"... TVs are landscape shaped, not portrait shaped. The Coast Starlight's full route is L.A., California to Seattle, Washington (or vice versa). One train will not make a return trip until it's completed it's full route. There is more than one running at a time, though. So, if you take a southbound Coast Starlight from Seattle, WA to only Sacramento, CA, but you wanted to ride a Coast Starlight back to Seattle, you'd just have to wait for the next northbound Coast Starlight to come to the Sacramento station. The amount of time for both trips should be about the same, I'd imagine. Here's the schedule; I hope this answer has assisted you. www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/timetables/Coast-Starlight-Schedule-021419.pdf
