I'm with you.. When I ride the train, I'm never ready to "get off the boat" either. A train trip is a joy you want to last forever.

My Mom and I rode The Amtrak Crescent #20 from Atlanta to New York on July 16-17 2015 and Return to Atlanta on Amtrak Crescent #19 on July 19-20 2015. It was A Great Overnight Train Ride Indeed.

I live in commuter train range of Penn Station NY. It's intriguing to think that I could walk from my own home, catch a commuter train to Penn Station NY, then transfer to any train to anywhere in the USA. Kinda neat.

Loved every minute that I've spent on two Amtrak trains. Took the Southwest Chief from Flagstaff to Chicago, and then took the Texas Eagle #422 from Maricopa to Chicago. It's just so.......so relaxing in a Sleeper.

Thanks for the video, you guys just completely did Amtrak job for them by doing a tour for us, thanks again.

I ride Amtrak trains when I travel long distance across the country. I rode Amtraks Sunset Limited 6 times, the Texas Eagle 5 times, the San Diegans(now Pacific Surflliners) 7 times, the Coast Starlight 3 times, the Silver Meteor, the Crescent and the Cardinal Once, a total of 24 times I have traveled on Amtrak trains. I rode the Crescent from New Orleans to Wilmington, DE on 9/19/2012 when I traveled to go to my 40 year high school class reunion. Traveling Amtrak is a great way to see the country.

just like i remember when my husband and two small children and I took the auto train to florida in 1995. we had a bedroom going down and regular seating coming back. what a great trip. the children still talk about it 22 years later. the funniest thing about the trip was getting a shower when sitting on the commode. talk about multitasking! :} the hardest part was my husband got really queezy riding backwards. :{

Am I the only one who has only a still picture, now, plus the original sound (I assume it's the same)? I seem to have the same audio track, but only the cover shot with its headline for the video. I liked this, too, since I hope to be able to take the Crescent to Washington or New York to switch to the Silver Star or Silver Meteor to Florida. It doesn't have its video anymore, but KZfaq keeps putting it in my feed. Right after I started watching videos on KZfaq, I discovered how beautiful train videos are. The countryside; the old towns and industrial buildings and ruins. The sounds of the train. The sunset reflected in the steel cars; the beautiful, analog, soulful, diesel Doppler effect of the horns, especially reflected in the music of my parents' time (of course, you don't hear that on a train you're travelling on! Or see much of the reflections), but a lot of the music of my lifespan and before. Anyway, this gave me a good look at Peachtree Station, and a lot about what to expect on the trip, including the train likely to arrive later than anticipated.

I like the roomettes on the Superliners better than the Viewliiners because the thought of a toilet in the room makes me think of all the guys who miss when the train is rocking and rolling. Not to mention the smell if someone is using it.

Aw Peachtree Station! I remember the first time I took the Crescent from DC to Atlanta years ago, my dad was an hour (or more) late because he kept driving right past the station over and over again, since it's so small (especially for THE Amtrak station in a major city like Atlanta). He also told me he stopping at multiple 7-11s to ask for directions, and they kept sending him to MARTA stations (nobody knew where Amtrak was lol). Ah, the memories...

Amazing video. I took 98 from Savannah to New York, and on the way there, the train was about 90 minutes late, and on the way back, all was fine until arriving in Washington DC. Their air pressure wasn't working, which powers their switches, so we sat at an abandoned platform for about 2 hours, and then sitting in Washington with no engines for about another hour. That ended up putting us 4 and a half hours late, arriving in Savannah at 10:45, instead of 6:30

Several years ago my wife and I took the Crescent from Gainsville GA to Greensboro NC. Short enough not to need a Roomette but we did have a nice meal in the dining car. But being a night only ride, we were not able to see the country side. Hoping to make a longer trip across country someday.

I've travelled on Amtrak train (even former private RR Company before Amtrak merged) for 51 years. So, I go once (sometime twice) a year in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if on time or delays. Train travel is a blast and amazing trips and friendly people.

I rode 42 hours strait on the 'Trak earlier this year, I was on the Southwest Chief going to Chicago from LA. Coming back from a buddy's on vacation and I did this trip by myself before I turned 21. Excellent scenery west of the Mississippi.

When you book Amtrak, book the trip so that you arrive a day early than you need to be there. As seen in this video, Amtrak trains can and do run very late... This is a good tip with any transportation options...

Not sure if anyone mentioned this in the previous 22+ comments but the reason for switching to diesel at Washington is because no diesels are allowed in the tunnels at NYC Penn Station. Sure, electric saves pollution, but the tunnel restriction is the main one. They also do that at Albany, NY heading east.

I took the Amtrak from Denver co to Michigan . loved it. if I had the extra time I would take it again.

My wife and i have taken several trips on the #19 and #20 to and from Anniston Al to DC and all stops in between. We always try for the bedroom but have had to use the smaller roomette on occasion. Yes it can be more expensive then flying and take longer than driving but nothing beats the relaxed atmosphere or the train. I'm not driving, I'm able to eat and sleep when I want and get up to move about the train. We absolutely love it and highly recommend you do it at least 1 time.

A way to know if your train will be late, especially when boarding at an intermediate station, is to go to the Amtrak website, and go to the bottom left where it says "Track a Train", and there will be a map of all the trains run by Amtrak, how late they are, where they are, and so on. On the mobile (and regular) websites, Train Status can be checked by plugging in your train number and your station (upper left near ticketing section on regular website).

Was not aware of the diesel to electric changeover for the NE corridor. Very informative!

I rode the Crescent out of Salisbury, NC back in the 70s, when it was still "Southern Crescent". Southern RR went all out on it's passenger trains right up until they handed over operations to Amtrak. The dining car back then was extraordinary. Our train went to New Orleans.

Thanks for the great video! I made my reservations several weeks ago on the Crescent from Tuscaloosa to NYC for Oct. 2017. My oldest and dearest friend and I are going on a cruise that departs from NYC. I get so tired of all the stress flying causes, which is why I opted for Amtrak, not to mention the lower price. Originally I had booked Business Class round trip, but I have upgraded to a Roomette for the trip to NYC. It was only $163 more, but if I upgrade for the return trip, it would be about $500 more! So, I'm keeping the Business Class seat on the way back. I can't wait - the train trip is going to be one of the huge highlights of the entire vacation! BTW, please tell your hubby I said ROLL TIDE! 😊

I ride Amtrak's #80 Carolinian up to NYC every year from Charlotte, NC. I love it!! There's no sleepers though. I have ridden the Southwest Chief and the Lake Shore Limited from Kansas City, MO to New York City. Those did have sleepers. I love Amtrak!

I took this same train from Atlanta to NYC. I had one of the "sleeper bunks". I was advised to take the "upper" one and loved it. It also had a sink and toilet and the bed was so comfy. Love Amtrak.

Last August, I took Amtrak from Seattle to L.A., 35 hours. I upgraded to a sleeper room rather than a roomette once my brother found out how small the roomettes are and that you can't lie flat. Also, you'd have to prance down the hall to the shower room. In a sleeper room, the shower is in the small bathroom. It's pretty ingenious how they worked it in that tiny space. Sleeping was difficult if you don't want to use the upper bunk with two people in the sleeper. You can pull out the bed, but it's tight for two guys. I managed to sleep well, but in the next room, my brother and his wife were very uncomfortable. She said she was awake all night partly because of being cramped and also with the constant blasting of the train's horn.I loved the dining car and the food. The scenery was only good from Seattle to Oregon, and then from Santa Barbara, CA., to L.A. I'm glad I took the overnight train once, but I won't do it again.

You'll have to make a return trip to NYC when they renovate to post office across the street as the new Penn Station reminiscent of the one from the early 1960's with soaring glass ceilings. I think the current one is an embarrassment to our metro area.

Hi Joanne, I've missed your videos. I remember when train travel was quite an elegant affair (I was a child then), and the sleeper cars were much bigger. The dining car and lounge was like an upscale restaurant. Too bad Amtrak doesn't have more routes.

If you are about to comment, here are the answers to some common questions: Can you bring food/drinks? Yes, you can. Sleeper passengers can also bring alcoholic beverages (coach passengers can't). There's also a snack car. Is the food good and what does it cost? I've always found the food in the dining car to be really good. There are lots of options, and I've almost never had a bad one. Food is free for sleeper passengers. Coach passengers have to pay for food, and it's relatively pricey. You can visit Amtrak's website to see the menu for each train. What does a ticket cost? There's no universal answer for this. Just go on Amtrak's website and price it out. The prices will vary based on the route, day traveling, and remaining rooms. I recommend checking prices on a couple days far in the future, to see the lowest possible fare. That will tell you what price you should look for. Do you have to share the room with a stranger? No. If you book a sleeper, that room is yours and yours only. You can book with a companion, but that companion would be the only other person allowed in your room. Can you smoke? No. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on any Amtrak train. On long distance trains, there will be a few smoke stops (where the train stays will stay in the station for 30-45 minutes). At those stops you can get off the train, walk around, and yes, smoke. You can ask your car attendant when the next smoke stop is.

Rode Amtrak's Silver Star from Columbia, SC to Tampa, FL in late October 2016, train was 7.5 hours late due to engine failure, Amtrak had to bum a freight engine from CSX in Rocky Mount, NC to continue the journey south. Splurged on the sleeper and it was day break when the train arrived Columbia, still nice to have your own room to stretch out during the ride and relax though! On time performance is largely on freight carriers, but mechanical issues to happen at times as well. It's like I tell people that ask about riding Amtrak, don't expect to arrive on time, but just sit back and enjoy the ride. Used to the Crescent was one of the better on time performers.

This was great! We've traveled on the Crescent before on coach but this next trip next week we booked a roomette for the trip from Phila to New Orleans. I knew the roomettes were small, but your video at least gave us more of an idea of what to expect. Thank you! The greatest thing about train travel is that I don't care when I get there because the train travel itself is it's own vacation!

I've taken Amtrak superliner sleeper many times but I've never been aboard their newer 'viewliner' cars. I'm old enough to remember taking "Pullman" sleeper on one of the many lines before the creation of Amtrak. Some things have improved, others are not as good. Still, over all, I'll take the train over an aircraft any day, if I can. An aircraft simply can not match the over all comfort of a train - that includes Etihad.

Doesn't look likes its changed much in the last twenty years, took the Crescent from DC to Atlanta in a roomette and from New Orleans to DC in a bedroom, of coarse you could smoke on the train in the lounge car then.

Looking at this on You tube from the Greater Montreal Canada area, this was a nice trip! I have never had the chance to travel further south than N.Y.C. and once to southern NJ. I also much appreciated the close-ups of the menu. This is different from what Via does as on amtrak you can order and choose. On Via you pretty much get what they offer, and you have to have a sleeper ticket to get a full meal. BTW, on another trip you might want to try Amtrak's Adirondack from Penn Station to Central Station in Montreal. It would be about 450 to 500 miles and takes 11 hours. Most of it is in New York State, crossing into Canada for perhaps the last hour or so. A nice season to do this might be spring, but spring is very short lived. april is probably as good a month for that. Temperatures are subject to wide variations, both seasonally and day to night so be prepared for the mercury to range from a few degrees Celsius above zero to about 20 Degrees Celsius. Wind can also vary, so check online with weatheroffice.gc.ca. When you arrive in Central Station you will find a whole underground city - restuarants, major Canadian Bank, the "GAB" (French for automatic teller) and more. don't try to obtain Canadian change in the U.S., its so much easier here. there are two major banks in the underground city, and they handle U.S. and Canadian exchanges at the drop of a hat. You can also expect to find some 80 languages spoken in a day - the world all comes to us. Over the year temperatures can vary from about minus 30 to plus 32 Celsius, so check with the weather office first! The underground city is also connected to the Bonaventure metro (read rubber tired subway) as well as some of the local commuter lines, so you can get around without needing a cab pretty easily, but you will need to learn what to do with a solo, or an opus, or >. They're all electronic fare cards with many options. If you're curious about Toronto, its certainly not next door. Via will take you there in some 4-5 hours, or, if going there from Penn Station, book yourselves on the Amtrak Maple leaf. That one also, I believe is an overnight, as its route is longer.

One small correction. The rooms with their own built-in showers are called Bedrooms, not roomettes. Roomettes have a shower room at the end of the row of rooms.

Very well done. One correction, the switch to electric in DC is not mandated by law. Electric is much more efficient, they accelerate faster and can reach higher speeds. Amtrak inherited the electrified North East Corridor from Penn Central. There are many diesel electrics that also use this corridor.

Sadly the delays are caused by rail sharing with freight service, they give priority to their trains, and Amtrak has to wait. Amtrak is young compared to the other railways, and do not own there own rails except through the eastern corridor. Such a dignified way to travel though. Sorry y'all missed the dinner. I rode on the Capital Limited from DC to Chicago, the meals were much better than I expected. The roomette I had didn't have a commode and sink in it, that was just down the hall, there was also a community shower in the lower part of the Pullman car.

Looks like a great experience! I would much rather take the train than fly as you can really enjoy the journey and make it more of a travelling experience. Our sleeper trains in the UK are quite more cramped by the looks of things! I recently went on one from London to Cornwall and posted a review on my channel.
