The reason Amtrak trains are delayed is that although Amtrak has a legal right over freight, today's freight trains are so long that the side track built long ago are too short for the freight trains to fit and let the Amtrak pass. So, it is the Amtrak train that has to yield to freight trains. The freight train companies that own the tracks (Amtrak paying them to use the rails) deliver financial results, and not freight--meaning that they don't invest what they should in track maintenance, according to all reports I read or saw on TV or KZfaq videos.

I always travel with what I call a small essentials kit with the following - a few aspirin - cough drops - allergy meds - eye drops - tweezers - dental floss - eyeglass cleaner packets - a few bandaids - stomach meds - ointment - small tube of suntan lotion, ect. The smallest little problem can be really annoying and easily solved with the kit. If you wear glasses, I would suggest bringing an older pair that still works for you. For me losing my glasses would be really bad. Also, paper copies of your tickets in case your tickets on your phone don't work . A pen and a small paper tablet are great if needed. A longer charger cord is good in case you are sitting in the aisle seat of the train. As mentioned elsewhere clean wipes and a small bottle of hand cleaner always comes with me . I put it outside my pack for easy access . The items listed will not take much room .

For the person who has the ADA room you can only walk through if you can walk up stairs since no elevator on the train and access to the other cars is on the top level and ADA bedroom is on the button floor.

Several years ago I used Amtrak to travel to Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, etc… loved every second of it! On my last adventure I was able to book a Roomette, and I had the time of my life. Met some lovely folks and had privacy which I appreciated greatly. My experience was amazing and I thank God I got to accomplish these beautiful moments. You will fall in love riding the Amtrak and will wonder why you didn’t do this sooner. God bless you on your new endeavors with Amtrak!❤️

I found that there are some very rough spots on the California Zephyr between Denver and Chicago.

A few rail companies show the direction of travel of the train, which really helps in picking your seat.

On the California Zephyr the tracks are bad in Iowa and some of Missouri. The conductor said it is because of the heavy grain cars that share the tracks.

Ditto with those black high fructose corn syrup tank cars... That LIQUID SUGAR has to be shipped by railroad to provide soda pop that sugar kick...

Do you know how soon after a trip is credited back to you when it will show up on the account? Part of our trip was disrupted because the train was over 5 hours late and the return was cancelled entirely. The Amtrak rep said she would credit our points back to us for the entire round trip. (We ended up renting a car to get home.) Its been about a week and I haven't seen the credit show up on my account yet.

Things to bring: cash if the card reader breaks in the cafe car, adult diapers if the toilets break, water, food, patience, earplugs, Clorox wipes, and never ever plan to do anything the day you take Amtrak if it is a one day trip and plan to be 8 or more hours late for the long distance trains. Please don’t take this as negative but instead realistic based on years of riding Amtrak. Also, did you hear them say in the video to bring a portable charger? Yes, they paid all that money to be in a roomette and their outlet in their roomette did not work! That’s so Amtrak!😂

You’ll find these older outlets in cafés and hotels, too. I carry a short 1.5 or 6” extension cord, 3 prong (most common). Really common in older buildings across the USA. I wonder why? Also if the outlet itself might be wiggly. That can be because it was not properly secured into wall. I like to carry a tester. Currently available from hardware stores ($5-$30, alone or in a kit) with lights to tell if wiring is correct. I hate to see sparks when i plug in.
