In this video we will take you on a tour of the Amtrak Family Bedroom on a superliner train. You will find the family bedroom in the Amtrak sleeper car on the Amtrak Empire Builder, Amtrak Sunset Limited, Amtrak Coast Starlight and the Amtrak California Zephyr. In this Amtrak Sleeper Car tour you will get a chance to see the family bedroom. The Amtrak bedroom selection is slim, there are only two options, the bedroom and the family bedroom. We will also chat about Amtrak roomette vs bedroom. We hope you enjoy the tour, let us know in the comments if you have booked the family bedroom before.

Just traveled from California to Denver in a family room with my husband. This video was great for preparing us and helping us know how to pack for our accommodations. A couple things: First, as two fairly tall/large people, I can’t imagine being comfortable in any smaller room!! Second, while the lower bed is pretty comfortable, it really only fits one person comfortably. And the upper bunk is hard as a rock. I can usually sleep anywhere, but that bunk was torture. Third, it’s super important to wipe everything down with some disinfecting wipes as soon as you move in. The tables, armrests, etc were really dirty. In fact, overall, the Zephyr sleeping car we were in was poorly maintained, dirty, and usually had large piles of full garbage bags and laundry bags blocking the hallway outside the bathrooms.

You two have me Amtrak travel addicted. I just finished a three part “triangle” excursion from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh and then back to Philadelphia again. Now, I’ve booked a first class round trip from Philly to Baltimore and back again, just to try the Acela and Amtrak 1st class at once. And I’ve been booked on a multi-part ride in Jan 2022, for Los Angeles to San Diego, then up to Emeryville to take the Zephyr to Chicago in a bedroom.

@@jameslandrum7837 Our train was pretty much on time it was just the schedule. As a side note if you are on your way to Yellowstone I have a couple of suggestions. @@jameslandrum7837 If you are in a hurry, FLY! Always book your Amtrak train journey with spending the night in any city where connections are made. I also book my journey to get to my final destination a day early too for a wedding, anniversary, graduation, birthday, etc. Amtrak can be a dozen hours or more late, so don't plan any quick connections. There aren't that many cities where Amtrak does make connections, they are all large cities, and spending a night and a day there actually spices up a journey with a layover... Instead of attempting to do a loop of some kind in nine days/two weekends and one week, spend two weeks or more doing that same loop...

My wife and I are scheduled to do a 19 days coast to coast from Albuquerque to California, Seattle, Chicago, DC, New Orleans and back to Albuquerque. We avail of the 299 Rail Pass and will be using it on 5 legs of less than 24 hour ride and the other 3 long hauls will be on a Roomette and one on a family Room on the Empire Builder. I was wondering if you could show or include (if possible) the Designated Luggage areas for coach on the Viewliner and Superliner. You guys are just awesome and of big help to people like us who have not experienced it yet.

Amtrak allows only two 50 pound bags for each passenger booked. I pack lightly with no more than 25 pounds in one airline or backpack bag... Two shirts, two pants or shorts, two undies, two pair of socks, one pair of shoes, and one pair of flip flops for showers, beaches, or pools... Since I like to spend the night at any connecting cities, there is ample opportunity to use a motel or hotel's laundry every other day or so... Layovers add spice to any journey... There are no laundry facilities onboard a train, unlike a cruise ship... There is NO need to pack a closet... Plan on layovers, enjoy visiting America, don't try to ride on trains and nothing else for two weeks or a month... You will go stir crazy as if you were in a jail cell for a month...

On a cross country trip I overheard the conductor describing an upgrade to the Family room to another passenger. That passenger didn’t go for it but I did. I was most interested in the windows on both sides of the train and was not disappointed. A bonus is that having a room the entire width of the car is that nobody passes buy the outside of your room or cuts thru it on the way somewhere else, certainly not every passenger in the sleeper cars. However, to accomplish that the room must be at the end of car and that puts the family room right over THE WHEELS! The sound and the vibration are unbearable. I didn’t get any sleep. Thankfully this was on the last leg of my trip. Will never book a Family room again.

I would gladly give up the shower/toilet combo to get a better night’s sleep. Do you find it easier to sleep downstairs? Yes, there is one per car on a superliner, but none on the viewliners. I think you'd find it more stable, but some people think it is louder as a trade off. The other factor is the beds go across the train, same as a bedroom, where as a roomette the beds go in the direction of travel, if that might make a difference.

Good info! These cars were built in the 80's & 90's & need updating. 1 power outlet near the entrance was meant for electric razors, not for today's devices. This room is ideal for smaller people-not for folks over 6'. It's good having the width of the car in Family Br's, but the windows are half the size of those in Roomettes & Deluxe Br's. With that said, the angle of view out of these windows is reduced. Too bad there are no enclosed bathrooms.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know if you need to use a camper for the future, they make trailers that are better than some homes with wonderful showers and bathrooms and kitchens etc. Some people are even living in them instead of a house. Just a thought. Take Care.Linda Warnke

Yep, I downsized into a used RV which I bought for less than the price of my new truck... And to think the average price of a home in many areas of the USA is more than $500 thousand. One can buy 10 new trucks for that amount... You can also buy some lake resort property for less than a new truck too...

You know, it doesn't make sense that trains make compartments so small. Unlike cruise ships and planes, with the ability to add on more cars, a train has potentially unlimited space to make living quarters much much larger, and include everything, including the bathroom. The trains I took in Europe back in the 90s were much more spacious than trains currently are here in the States.

Considering the Family Bedroom is on the lower deck near the railcar's wheelset, does the wheel/track noise present a problem inside the bedroom?
@GroundedLifeTravel

Some people have said that, but it didn't bother us much
@chrisransdell8110
@chrisransdell8110 2 жыл бұрын
Only you can judge if it is bothersome but I'm pretty confident a noise meter would confirm that the lower level's family bedroom IS louder than any normal upper bedroom or roomette. You can really hear and feel the rougher rail joints and junctions. People who get motion sick might be happy with that lower level though because it sways less than the upper berths being closer to the pivot point of the suspension.

How often are there problems with the trains breaking down, in your experience? What happens when a train has a breakdown? A reason that I hesitate to take a long train trip is the possibility of mechanical issues on the train causing it to park in the middle of "nowhere". Thanks!

It happened to us 2 weeks ago. It ended up we got into LA 6 hours late but they fed us extra meals so it wasn't bad. They always have a backup nearby, in this case they borrowed a locomotive from a freight train. That is not common though.

More often than it should though, but considering the age of these Superliners, some over 40 years old, Amtrak is doing a great job just keeping this old rolling stock running. Soon new locomotives will arrive as a new batch have been ordered... It isn't just Amtrak trains and locomotives causing delays, Amtrak trains are running on the same tracks as the freight railroads locomotives and rolling stock as well... If a freight train ahead of Amtrak is having mechanical issues, it will delay Amtrak...

We did not particularly enjoy our Family Bedroom on an end to end Empire Builder journey. The single electrical outlet is positioned VERY awkwardly high on a wall meaning your phone or power adapter are likely to be dangling unless you have an extra long charging cable. The windows are both very small. Also, being on the lower level you hear and feel more clunking and thumping from the rails. On the flip side, the side to side rocking is less pronounced on the lower level. One thing I didn't mind at all was the bathroom situation. I've never found the shared bathrooms to be dirty, there are 3 of them to choose from and the dedicated shower is a lot more enjoyable to use (for me) than a shower that awkwardly straddles a toilet with a little cover over the TP etc which is what the in room shower involves. Also, the solid door and the relatively isolated location downstairs definitely brings some privacy and if you do have children or noisy travelers, the location downstairs at the end of a hallway should avoid bothering others as much as possible. Overall I'd take this room at face value. If you MUST have more than 2 beds it is your only choice. Is it 'better' than a standard bedroom if you have 2 people? Not in my book.

Be wise and layover at every connecting city, whatever the city... Layovers add spice to your train journey... Since trains can and do run very late, spend the night at any connecting city... It will give you peace of mind and allow you to relax so much more when you don't worry about how late the train is... It will also give you ample time to do your laundry at a hotel at that connecting city on your layover as there isn't a whole lot of space for luggage on a train. Some space, just not a lot... Pack lightly, use hotel laundries....

Either the Silver Meteor or Silver Star to Washington DC, then either the Capitol Limited or the Cardinal to Chicago, and then either the California Zephyr or Southwest Chief to SF or LA respectively... Four nights, three trains... I would add another night to layover in Washington DC and Chicago, adding two more nights to your journey... Layovers add spice to a journey giving you a day to make safe connections in connecting cities without worrying about how late your train is... Peace of mind is worth the extra two nights...
