Following last summer's minor service diversions to facilitate NY Penn Station track work, Amtrak has gone forward with the Spuyten Duyvil Swing Bridge rehabilitation, in addition to major track work along the Empire Connection. This means that ALL Empire Service trains are being diverted into Grand Central Terminal until September 4th, 2018. Additionally, the Maple Leaf and Adirondack trains are also running in and out of NYG. The Lakeshore Limited's NY section is being re-routed to Boston for the duration of the project, as there are no facilities at GCT to service the Viewliners that are a part of the Lakeshore's consist.
The action seen here comes from the first weekday schedule run of the re-routed services, and gets off to a shaky start, as both the outbound Maple Leaf and Adirondack trains are delayed 90 to 110 minutes out of GCT due to both locomotives' paperwork being out of date. Additionally, for the time being, until nose hatches are cut into the remaining Amtrak P32AC-DMs, the MARC cab cars will continue to be used with as-yet unmodified locomotives. Enjoy the action =)

Interesting to see how the Amtrak units with the hatches get big Amtrak logos on th front. Also, are passengers allowed to ride the MARC cars?

What surprised me is that they are apparently looping the trains at GCT. I thought that GCT was entirely push-pull now, with another cab car on the other end. I also though that MN would require them to have the P32's pointing North.

I thought that the LSL problem was that there was no "Commissary" in GCT to restock the diner. As I understand it, AMTRAK has temporarily reopened the facility in Albany for the duration of the re-route to stock the train with food there. Now that the LSL is being changed to cold food for sleeper passengers, I wonder if AMTRAK even needs the Albany Commissary.

Yes, the P32AC-DM are owned by the NY DOT. The Adirondack, Empire Service, Maple Leaf, and Ethan Allen Express are funded by New York. While a national route, the Lake Shore Limited uses the P32 to gain access to NY Penn Station as well.

In the tunnels of Grand Central, the space is so tight that evacuation by the side doors of the locomotive is not possible.

I think that there has to be an escape hatch in case there's some emergency in the Park Avenue tunnel.

Glen Denig the subways and the els nowadays are the same system and this is neither of those. This viaduct is for heavy commuter rail and from time to time for intercity service

Those other trains are MetroNorth commuter trains, consisting of the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines. During rush hour it's so busy that trains often queue to enter. It is entirely separate from the NY subway system, which uses light-weight transit cars. A half-century ago, this was the portal through which New York Central passenger trains approached Grand Central Terminal.

Yes they did. But no one rode in them for safety reasons.

I didn't realize that AMTRAK was cutting nose hatches into it's engines. Why would they do that if they're going to return to Penn Station where the problem doesn't exist? The re-route supposedly ends 9/4. Why spend the money for a short-term problem?

MrReddygarcia I'm honestly not all that sure. Amtrak was originally considering converting a few former CDOT FL-9s into NPCUs for use for turn around service at Grand Central. This plan was scapped however because they're installing nose doors on current P32AC-DMs, so I can only assume that's what they'll use along with the borrowed MARC cab cars.

The Marc trains can go into Canada if you meant that they could fit on the same track. Marc is the commuter rail for Maryland though.

SouthernPacificPatch Unfortunately no. They're instead going to be using the MARC cars temporarily until they finish the new nose door installations on the P32AC-DMs (Metro North's units already have this feature). As much as I wanted to see the old FL-9s return to service as NPCUs, this was ruled out due to the cost of the conversions and the age of the locomotives.
