Amtrak's California Zephyr - REAR VIEW - Crossing the Mississippi & through Burlington, Iowa

Railfan window view from Amtrak's westbound California Zephyr crossing the Mississippi River (at flood stage) from Illinois into Burlington, Iowa. The trackage is BNSF (ex-CB&Q). After the station stop, the video continues on through the city of Burlington. Note that the station area and adjacent yard were under several inches of water several days beforehand due to widespread flooding in the Midwest states. Filmed in the early evening of Saturday, June 8, 2019.

At 4:35 there is a set of tracks going left. I used to get in the yard when I was a kid(some 60 years ago) by walking down it. That track goes quite a distance. You can even find it bordering Crapo Park several miles down the way.

This is the best looking well maintained trestle I have seen in a long time.@ 2:36. Most are rusty and need so much work to bring them up to their original condition

I saw me and my two friends in this video at Burlington IA station platform. That day we were back from Illinois Railway Museum and take a stop at Burlington IA. I remember that day the flood of Mississippi river was still there and lots of midgets were having around. I do see you and wave to you. Thanks a lot! I am surprised and happy to see myself here.

01:50 On the right side, you will see the old CB&Q roadbed (Iowa / Carthage Junction) for CB&Q branch that ran on south from this point on the east side of Mississippi River to Quincy.. It passes thru Carmen, Lomax, Dallas City, Colusa, Carthage, and Quincy. It crossed the SantaFe / TP&W (no traffic interchange) at Lomax and Wabash at Carthage and Quincy. The 1965 Mississippi River Flood caused significant damage to CB&Q and US 34 highway in this area. The south branch was abandoned from here to Lomax after 1965, and progressively abandoned to Quincy over the next 20 years (post BN merger).

Once the train turns around, you will notice on the right is a single rail line leading into the brush. This was a favorite place for exploring and I used to walk down it as a young boy of age 10. I would explore the bluffs and find numerous caves and small clearings. Always kept an eye on the rails looking for loose spikes. It has hardly used even in the late fifties.I suspect it has not been used in years.

@@jeffreycenga587 yep. That's the K Line to St Louis. The Mark Twain Zephyr ran on it back in the day. It still has 15-20 trains on it per day.

We were on the very-late-running eastbound Zephyr the same day. We passed here earlier, met your westbound Zephyr west of Galesburg, and were held out of Galesburg until the Southwest Chief had finished its station stop.

Wow, that's a swift current on the river! I think the stopped freight train we passed may answer this question but--is the bridge designed to support the weight of two trains crossing at once?

"@Geoffrey Bradford* The reason why the BNSF freight train was stopped, was for a red signal, for Amtrak. Because once the Amtrak train crossed the bridge, Amtrak eventually was switched to track #1, at 5:29, to put the train on that side of the station. This was the same track the BNSF freight was on way back, just before the bridge. There is always a reason why traffic control (BNSF dispatcher) makes these moves. 🤔 Tony, an old school guy 62-year-old Black US AIR FORCE VET ✈️🇱🇷 And GOD-FEARING PATRIOT 🙏

What we're seeing? It's been practically the same for the last 25 years. South of the crossing and further west [still south of the rail line] is the built-up parts.

After the CB&Q merger with NP, GN, and SP&S to create BN (1969/1970; Burlington and Quincy operations were reduced over 20 years. When Santa Fe merger with BN (1996), West Burlington operation ceased and Ft. Madison operations (old Santa Fe mainline) were curtailed with Galesburg absorbing some functions. Quincy/Hannibal, after extensive flooding in 1993, were not restored to former levels.

More Speed Too Slow Crossing The Mississippi River And Negotiating The Bends Order More Speed If I Were The Engineer Expect Bridge Crossing 40Mph Then 20 Mph Around The Bends And Switch Tracks At 30 Mph

Foolish comment. Mississippi River levels rising … notice speed of flow? Passenger Station is only a few thousand feet ahead.
