Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited at 100 MPH, with four private cars, and 50th Anniversary locomotive

Lead by 50th Anniversary locomotive #108, Amtrak's train #48, the Lake Shore Limited, blows through Colonie, NY, at 100 MPH. On the rear are four historic private passenger cars; the Pacific Home, Pacific Union, Northern Pacific Dome 549, and the America.
The stretch of track between Schenectady and Albany, NY, has a speed limit of 110 MPH and trains routinely reach those speeds.

The old Delaware and Hudson that track is in fantastic shape still Do freight trains still come through there or is it strictly all just Lakeshore limited line now?

The track is leased to Amtrak. In addition to the Lake Shore Limited, there are the Empire Service trains which there are several each direction daily. CSX does run an occasional freight but it is local switching only.

@@AAPRCO D&H under the CP did also use this track from 1999-2012 for runs to Fresh Pond, Queens, NY. Freight speed is 50 MPH

I used to live there and never saw trains go this fast, but they were planning to upgrade that section when I left 6 years ago Are any of your members in the Albany Saratoga area ?

Yes. Several cars are also stored long term at Albany-Rensselaer.

When did amtrack raise the top speed from 79mph? How do you know how fast it was going? After doing a 5 minute fact check, top speed on the stretch of track mentioned is still 79mph. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks Bob

Between Albany and Schenectady, they’ve implemented track and signal improvements to allow for 110mph. A few miles west of Schenectady, there improvements allow them to do 90.

It's been 110 MPH for several years on this section of track. As for this particular video there happened to be a NY State Trooper at the crossing that day. He was watching for traffic violations at the crossing in connection with a rail safety campaign. He was also dubious about the train speeds and used his LIDAR to measure it. You can hear him call out "98" at 0:30. The train was accelerating through the crossing and easily hit 100 MPH.
