Amtrak's Midwest Repair Shops: Back to Beech Grove

This is a follow up trip to the Beech Grove facilities. I was here in the summer of 2022 and on looks alone, it had more locomotives and cars at the facility.
I say it seems "less busy this time." I should have clarified that what I meant is there are not as many engines or cars on site.
I went on a Sunday, and did not expect to see anyone working. So, it was not to imply anyone was not working or should have been working.
Here is a link to the previous video:
• Wrecked, Repaired and ...
I wanted to come back and see how things were going and if there were any new worthwhile finds.
I hope you enjoy.

Hello Danno. I hope you enjoyed the unique look at the facility. If you'd ever be interested on a Saturday or Sunday to get together and talk about the facility and what goes on there, I'd love to talk. I put together a similar video a while ago with an engineer for an excursion train if you want to check out something similar to what I had in mind. The link to the video is below. Either way, thanks to you and everyone else at the facility. Being from the Cincinnati area, I don't get to see Amtrak very often, so it's always a treat to see the Beech Grove facility. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNSbdbJjvNHUZn0.html

I can see this video has new additional improvements. First, the other video, they were cutting up the ground and was wondering what is for? Now I see, they added 2 new tracks right by the red building there. Also they installed new parking lot. Also they extended the tracks all way to the end. They are changing things around. Now, we need to get these SSL/Sleepers/Coach restored and do a rebuilt then put it in service, believe me you will see a big change. Nice job and keep them comin! BTW, I wrote a blog about this and included this video in to spread the word!

Man, oh, man... My uncle and my brother in law were responsible for cleaning up after a serious passenger car accident about 30 years ago. They were with Amtrak and lived in Beech Grove. It was tough on them for sure. I lost a dear friend to cancer a few months ago. He was a long-time CSX employee and a lovely man; husband, father, brother, friend. When CSX made major lay-offs and changes around 2018/19, he made the move from Indy to Florida for CSX less than 6 months after he finished building a lovely home for his wife and daughter in Greenwood, IN. He was loyal to these rails. He was a lovely man. The stories that go along with these trollies are as endless as the rails. Stories of my life surrounded by tracks as a child. It's such a rich history. Thank you for the priceless footage.

My uncle used to work for Amtrak at that facility. He's told me some stories about that. If a train had hit say a cow on the tracks, they would come to one of these repair yards, and usually the rookies would be put on dead something clean-up because they can't let the parts and bits stay within the wheels and axles and what not.

Beech Grove resident here....I know nothing about trains but my grandfather worked here for nearly 40 years. He started out sweeping floors and ended up the plant manager. He's now going to enjoy several years in a federal prison.

@joshbrony2204
@joshbrony2204 Жыл бұрын
Agreed on both, even though I don’t have a Mavic 3. The ALC-42 is one of the most unreliable engines Amtrak has ever received. The reason for this is because the air intake is fully exposed to the environment, so when snow gets inside and melts, the whole engine basically dies. Some Amtrak trains have been delayed for several hours because of this. P42DCs are much better, but I understand that they’re aging and won’t last forever.

People on here acting like all it takes is money to fix all of this. Alot of the issue is the amount of skilled workers they have available to fix some of these, and the space available. We cannot see into the buildings, perhaps all of the spaces are filled being worked on. Consider current lead times in the parts market. Next, consider the fact that cars are moved in and out every week, some will remain as parts, but others have been fixed, while more have come in.

you may have mentioned this before but who’s facility was this before Amtrak took it over? Secondly I look at all equipment and think about the billions in govt subsidies that went into and continue to be spent on Amtrak and wonder if it really makes sense other than in the heavily traveled corridors??

Those old engines Genesis were already supposed to be scrap, well at least if the new Chargers worked. There was and still is plenty of money to buy all new engines, but the hold the GAO put on the order held things up for several years until the hold was removed by people unfamiliar with their problems. Now Amtrak has old Genesis and lots of new Charger engines that can't be used in the winter. Wonnerful. Those Superliners are doomed, never to return. The order going out next year are for all new Venture cars to replace them. European design single level cars.

Nice, there is quite a lot going on in the yard. This workshop has beautiful old buildings. Last year I had been IN the main workshop of the Berlin S-Bahn. Maybe the video is interesting. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7WDfrp1ppm6c4U.html In any case, it's a great video for me, thanks for posting. What kind of drone are you filming with??I myself am thinking about buying one because the construction of noise protection walls is increasingly blocking my view during the route expansion here in Berlin. Greetings from the U.S. Thank you for sharing the video, I can't wait to watch. I recently purchased the DJI Mavic 3. It has a wide angle and telephoto lens. The telephoto is what I think really adds to the video. I can stay quite far away, but still get very good shots. I would certainly recommend getting a drone. They're very fun, and easy to learn how to use.

Amtrak needs to try and respect their heritage units and use engines they have rather than no even trying. I saw 4 different paints, shows you Amtrak has no heart for railfan favorites.

They can’t help it if something can’t be fixed. For instance 66 hit a truck and the frame bent real bad. 156 hit a dump truck and completely destroyed the front end which I also believe bent the frame or cracked it. 822 I believe is retired.

A waste of time honestly, because as a member of the traveling public, it would be more appropriate to know the repair sequences of when coaches and engines would be returned to service. Just watching the camera going back and forth with out in put serves no purpose.
