Amtrak: Semaphores, Jointed Rail, and Wigwags

In this C. Vision KZfaq exclusive, we visit the former Santa Fe secondary mainline in Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico in March and November of 2014 in search of semaphores, high speed jointed rail, and the famous Delhi wigwag. Today, these lines are known as the La Junta and Raton Subdivisions of BNSF. Amtrak's Southwest Chief is seen as it speeds across the plains, and does battle with the 3.5% grades of Raton Pass. An early morning BNSF freight is captured east of La Junta as well, adding a little variety. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery and classic infrastructure, in "Amtrak: Semaphores, Jointed Rail, and Wigwags".

Time seems to stand (nearly) still out there. It appears that the last of the semaphores are finally passing into history.

What I miss most are the telegraph poles leaning different directions and how they follow the topography of the land while the railroad track is flat, or nearly so. It’s an odd juxtaposition but a sight to see early in the morning or at sunset.

They certainly do add something to the look of the right-of-way. Lines that no longer have them just aren't the same.

22 semaphores were removed in November 2022. 11 remain... soon to be zero. Zero wig wags remain.

Are there any Semaphores on this line now? Does BNFS run thought trains now? I hope someone can answer my questions.

I believe there are a few semaphores left. They have been slowly getting replaced since this video was shot. There are no through freights over Raton anymore.

I saw a couple of semaphores while I was on my trip on the Southwest Chief, but that was almost a year ago, this one set of semaphores directly south of Springer NM, that I saw has been replaced. There has also been an announcement by USDOT that will replace the final sections of this line from jointed rail to welded rail, and there's a good chance that the semaphores could disappear with the bolted track. The history in motion will soon enough become actual history.

You got that right! A railroad frozen in time is the best way to describe this territory. In these situations, you usually find a deteriorating physical plant to go along with the classic infrastructure. As you know, that isn’t the case here. This line has been maintained for higher passenger train speeds. It’s pretty fascinating. Thank you for watching and commenting.

@@scr2392 every other week it seems like something new is failing out here with this old signal system. It’s not uncommon for us to have to move at restricted speed because of it.
