As a mother and the daughter of a mother who was mentally ill, alcoholic, and a single parent who caused me major trauma. Don't have kids if you don't want them. You're not a victim or hero for having kids. Adoption is always an option. I did not hit the lottery. For people like me this is a big reminder that I am the one who defines the word mother. Not my history.

Mother’s Day brings me great anxiety as a daughter. I feel pressured to say things that I don’t mean and gift a mother who has brought me so much sadness and trauma since I was a child. This year I did not send her a card and now I wish that I had so I don’t have to text her tomorrow and explain why, there is no card. No matter what I do I’ve always been a disappointment to her anyway.

@HH-gv8mx I'm so sorry. Being a daughter to someone like that is not how it should be. Take care of yourself. Hope you get though today with as little contact as possible and know you're not a disappointment to us. I might not know you but no one deserves that. Hugs.

My mother was abusive. She was a narcissistic alcoholic and in later years, a hoarder. Verbally, physically, emotionally abusive. Neglectful one moment and using me as her own personal dress-up doll the next. She was abused as a child and because that's what she had been raised to believe she deserved, she married an abusive man. My childhood was an absolute nightmare. So much so, that I left at 18 and never went back. So much so, that when I heard that my parents died, I felt nothing but relief. Even so, somehow my mother instilled in me her love of books early on and aI think that's the only thing that saved my life. I thank her for that, at least.

I think you can grow up and understand your parents more and empathize with your parents and what they went through, but I don’t think that understanding their struggles excuses their behavior. The point I always ask myself is did my mother and father grow through their adulthood and parenthood, did they try to do better, did they work on improving themselves for the sake of their children? The answer for me is no. If you had flawed parents who knew they were flawed and wanted to be better and tried to be better, even if they failed often, then you hit the lottery. Many people and many parents don’t want to change and don’t believe they have to.

This segment made me cry. My mom passed in 2018. My mom and I had a rocky relationship when I was in my 20s and early 30s. It was like a light went off in my brain that said, forgive her. She did the best that she could with what she had to work with. My mom's childhood was barbaric due to her physically, abusive mom. Mom had little tolerance for nonsense in her house. As a kid, we didn't get it. But I thank God for giving me a second chance with her later in my adulthood. All the way to her very end, her and I became really close. I think we would of still had a close relationship but she had early stage dementia and major health issues that caused her to go into a coma and she never came back from the coma. Mom was the BEST mom. I miss her everyday. I think of her often. Mom was a beautiful soul from inside and outside. I LOVE ❤️ YOU MOM! HAPPY HEAVENLY MOTHER'S DAY!! 💋💋🙏🏾🙏🏾😭❤️❤️💐🌺

I was very fortunate to have a self-sacrificing mother who took care of me as a single mom. She was not my biological mother (that one was a mess and I'm grateful she didn't raise me). Ana made a great point about not leaving things unsaid. The last time my mom was in the hospital, her stay was about a year (she was in & out a lot over the years). On my 16th birthday I felt a strong urge to visit her. We had a long talk, lots of things that neither of us ever said to each other before. She finally told me that since I was 16, I was grown, and her job was done. She died the next morning. I used to think she was asking my permission, but later realized she just wanted me to understand. Later, as a disabled single dad, I had a much better appreciation of my mother and her health issues. That last visit with her was priceless.
