A U.S. tourist was detained during mass protests in Georgia. Georgian security forces took Bryan Bingham at a demonstration in Tbilisi against the so-called foreign agent law. He says he was beaten by police.

This just proves corruption is still the name of the game in Georgia. Obviously Russia has paid these politicians off! 😢What else explains this?

No call for the violence on the thug security forces, but he shouldn’t have put himself in that situation. Backpacking in Georgia? And that’s high on his bucket list? Not too smart.

@@jptrainor I have toured Georgia several times and people vacation there regularly from where I live. My best friend was there in the last 6 months along with his elderly parents. I don’t see why this is unrealistic. He could, of course, be anybody, but it is entirely plausible he was just visiting as a tourist.

@@SomethingBlonde-oc7sc Good to know. I’m saying that you prudently shouldn’t visit a foreign country and wander into a mass protest (and close enough to the security forces) and then act surprised when bad things happen. I’d think it likely he was looking for his 15 minutes of fame and now the US state department has to get involved to try and extricate him so he can go home to multiple interviews. I suspect his innocence. I’m sure without Russian influence the Georgians could make a great country and destination. Cheers.

@@gregsscubavids5128 Lol yes. I was not opining on the wisdom or lack thereof of his specific actions, just saying that I personally have visited Georgia. I am an American girl living in Central Europe. I do understand what it is like to want to stand in solidarity with people, but in every circumstance in which I’ve done so, I’ve fully accepted any consequences without any level of surprise. That’s what civil disobedience is. Accepting the consequences is part of it. To me he seems like someone who was unaware of what those consequences might be. In the US we grow up with the right of peaceful assembly and would be surprised to be treated in such a way in our own country. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but one should always fully consider their actions before taking them when travelling abroad. Where I live, demonstrations are not met with violence. When I went to my first protest here we all stood in a huge park and listened to the speakers and sang national songs whilst drinking tea. No fear. 😊
