Thanks for the post. i did not know Buddy but ( he was a Hero ). Con Thien was Hell. I arrived at Con Thien & within 20 min. 2 dead several wounded. yes, i was scared as hell. one of the guys i was replacing said, welcome to hell, this is your new way of life get use to it. spent about 14 months on the hill

oh my what a nice young man ,i could see in his eyes and his smile when he spoke of his little girl,and wife just how much he loved and adored them, makes me very sad to know that he didnt get to spend his life with them , rest in peace buddy x

Dang. You can quickly tell by his demeanor that he was a genuine kind hearted man. It breaks my heart he left this world without meeting his daughter, so many of them lost their lives for nothing. This one is for you, Buddy. May your light continue to shine.

My neighbor was killed in 1968 on his very last day in Vietnam, I was 6 years old and I remember the entire neighborhood was devasted. His name was Robert Marcantoni. Bobby's parents had a big banner tied to the telephone poles on our street saying welcome home Bobby. They never recovered from his death. The Vietnam war touched and tore a lot of lives apart. So sad!

I'm a father and I teared up watching this, then I saw Janet Mann-Stewarts' comments. Its' usually parents losing children that makes me tear up but this made me teary for grown up children. I want to wake my daughter up to hug her. I'm going to hug her so much in the morning that she will think I have lost my mind and in a sense I have. We have to make sure this never happens again.

This makes me feel very sad. This man was a perfectly healthy person with lots of potential and his life was robbed from him during that awful war. So many other young men with the same potential were also wiped out and absolutely nothing was accomplished from this and it gives me chills to think how long these guys have been dead for. This was about 50 years ago and look what these guys missed. They missed the 70's the 80's and the rest of time after that and didn't get to see all the advancements in the world all the technology that was created. This man never saw his wife again and didn't get to see his daughter grow up. He should have lived and he would probably be in his early 70's today just living life. It is so tragic.

ryan king Just because it’s incredibly painful it doesn’t change the sad truth: he died for money and little sick games played by sociopathic leaders. Nobody’s spitting on his grave! Putting blindfolds over your eyes just means the same cycle is going to keep happening ( as it does with other wars, pick one just in 21st century ) and we don’t learn. This man was exploited and sacrificed, his ideals were noble but naive and ignorant, people still trusted their government and country then, today we’re waking up.

I did some research and he died in December which was a month after this was filmed. Very sad. I found out he was only 20 years old too... Now days, most 20 yr olds are really immature and so hearing that he already had a family back home really surprised me. I guess it was a different world back then...

The way he starts breathing when he talks about the incoming artillery. You can tell he already had ptsd at this moment. Its almost taking his breath away to talk about it. Poor guy.

You can see the guy's face light up when he talks about his newborn child back home. I looks like he was proud of her already. When he says 'he's a natural born chicken' it don't mean what some folk might figure it does. 'Cos I've served with at least one hero and that's just the way that real humble heroes talk when they want to put us normal folk at our ease.

Janet...unbelievable video footage of your father. How he spoke of the conditions there in Vietnam. Talking to the reporter, specifically about you and your mother,was absolutely amazing. Dear Janet: Please accept my thanks for the sacrifice your father and your family made on behalf of our country. As you certainly know, your father is a hero and will always be. I felt compelled to tell you that, as a father, I understood immediately the joy he felt when I saw his eyes light up when speaking of you, his baby daughter. I can assure you that although he had not yet seen you in the flesh, he loved you as if he had been your father his entire life. I hope that can, in some small measure, give you comfort as the daughter of a hero who sacrificed his life for all of the rest of us. God bless, and RIP Lance Corporal Buddy Mann.

My mom and I were supposed to meet up with him in Hawaii for R&R, just 2 weeks after he was killed. I know where Con Thien is. It was 2 or 3 miles north of Dong Ha across the Cua Viet river. I was Army, serving in I Corps in support of the 3rd Marines from Feb.1968/69. We were 1Cav. operating out of Lz Stud (Vandegrif), LZ Sharon, Quan Tri Province. Hello. God Bless You. Marines were a tough bunch of guys with no names. But I remember you. I’m a disabled OEF veteran and served in the Marine Corps and Army for ten years total. I find myself visiting this video often and it epitomizes the story of so many people that died in that war. I guess there are two reasons I watch it. One is, I also served in the Marine Corps. Two, I was away in a war when my son was born, but I was lucky enough to make it home. It could have easily went the other way just like it did for Buddy. I have wept many times over the unfairness of it all. Let us never forget the ultimate sacrifices some had to make. Right after graduation in 1964 I joined the Navy and one of my best friends joined the Marines. He was in Bravo 1/9 and was killed in the ambush and massacre during Operation Buffalo of July 2, 1967. I read the book about that encounter and my heart was broken at what happened there. I wear a Buddy Poppy all the time in my hat in memory of Lance Corporal Robert Haines. May God's peace and comfort be with you and all those others who have lost a loved one in defending our nation.

I have watched this interview several times since I first saw it, and every time it is harder and harder to watch. He seems like such a kind person, and it's devastating to think that he didn't ever get to come back home and finish his deserved happy life. God bless him and his family. People like this make me proud to be an American. I wish more Americans today appreciated the sacrifice people like buddy have made in the name of this country.

Dying in a war that was prolonged over four presidencies for political reasons is nothing to be proud of, it’s tragic. The guys daughter had to grow up without a dad. His death was tragic and meaningless.

In 1966 I was sent to Camp Pendleton, California for 6 weeks of training prior to leaving for Southeast Asia from San Diego with 800 other Marines on the troup transport USS Simon B. Buckner. Seventeen days later we pulled into Okinawa to refuel the ship. I and 24 other Marines got off the ship because they needed radio repairmen on the island. The rest went on to Vietnam. A few months later I was at Camp Hansen at the rifle range for my annual rifle qualification. I was in the chow line one day and heard a familiar voice behind me. I turned around it was one of my buddies from the battalion that went on to Nam. He said he was on the island for R&R. He told me that our battalion went on to Con Thien and had suffered 80% casualties. Damn, I was glad I got off on Okinawa.

Buddy Mann, comes across as a unassuming young man not self absorbed with his own importance. Called to action and responded like generations of young men before him. I hope that ‘Buddys’ walk among us always, we never know when duty calls. Regardless of your feelings about Vietnam this young guy is someone every patriotic American can identify with. Janet Mann-Stewart Your father and the hundreds of thousands of troops who fought during the Vietnam war were my inspiration to join the Army. He is a true hero in my book, I appreciate his service and sacrifice for our country. I am happy for you to have this video of him, not many service related people have this kind of memory, you are one of the lucky ones. GOD bless you and your family and may he Rest In Peace.

Was there 10/1/67, with 3rd Bn 9th Marines. This brought tears to my eyes and many sad memories. Most of the grunts were from lower and middle class families. There is no bias, no racism, no jealousy in a foxhole! We were kids and we were naive but we were all brothers! I'm 72 years old and my only really vivid memories are from Viet Nam! I still have the plaid cloth grasshopper suitcase taken to Nam with my serial # written on the side. I thank the lord everyday for my life. I will see Buddy and all my marine family again in heaven. God bless you and your family Janet!!

I’m so sorry about the loss of your daddy!! My dad is a Vietnam Era veteran too. He first had orders to go to Vietnam then his orders were changed at the last minute and he went to Germany. My kids have Veteran’s Day services at school and he is reluctant to attend because he feels that men like your dad, the true brave hero’s need recognized before he does. Garland Ray Mann layed down his life for the freedoms we all have today in this country along with 11,201 Marines in the Viet Nam war.Janet I me so sorry you were not able to grow up and know and love your father,I'm sure he would have been very proud of you. I also served my country in the Marines at Con Thien in1966 with the 5th Marines.There`s a saying that God has chosen his gates to heaven to be be guarded by United States Marines, I me sure your father will be there to welcome you when God calls you to his kingdom. America was so afraid that communism would spread around the world they thought they had to go fight everywhere communism sprouted up. Well, South Vietnam fail to the communist and not one other country in south east Asia has ever fallen to them. Vietnam was the biggest mistake America ever made.

Truly saying this with all due respect because his was heart breaking. I was going to point out he was right about not making it home for Christmas. He died on the 6th of December.. then I realized.. my God.. he was home for Christmas but not in his actual home.. but at De falls Bluff cemetery. My god. Brutal. So he was wrong. He was shipped back for Christmas. Terrible. He didnt get shipped back with life in him. His body made it back.

LC Buddy Mann -- a clear example of one of the most decent and honorable young men who served our country. He makes me proud to be an American. Although he passed nearly 50 years ago, he is a living contrast to the safe space, trigger warning snowflakes who are now in their late teens/early 20's who contribute nothing to society and cannot even conceive of LC Mann's bravery and humility. Rest in peace and thank you for sacrifice. You are truly the best any country ever produced.

Heartbreaking! Scared, as he should be, but putting on such a brave face for his fellow Marines (semper fidelis) and knowing family back home might see this interview. Just wanting to be with his young wife and little baby girl. Wanting desperately to be back home in DeValls Bluff. You see the goodness in his eyes. He comes across as a very decent young man. For a "natural born chicken," he sure has a lot of guts! If we could have shared just one day with him, lived what he lived for just one day, then, "My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori" (Wilfred Owen).

Janet, I am terrible with words, but I just wanted to say that you and your family are in my prayers. This hurt to watch but I am glad it is here. It should teach us all to simply enjoy each day as I know you do. So many have no idea what it is like not to have your father there growing up and the added pain of that absence during graduations, marriage, having a baby and so on. Find peace in that he was there during all those moments. May a peace come over you.

64knuckles what are you talking about, nothing wrong with being scared. Im sure you was too, when the rounds go off beside you. I was TAD with H&S Co 1/9th Marines and involved in the Evacuation of Saigon (April 75) I was scared. As General Mathis ( The Secretary of State) once said, "A scared Marine is a live Marine"

I saw this clip first time 7 months ago and find myself thinking of Buddy and his fellow marines and Australian soldiers that were in this conflict regularly. Be sure nice if Buddy got back to Hawaii again makes me think not to waste our free lives when he would dream to have a burger in a cafe free.
