Rick Baker, the man behind the special effects and make-up in this movie, won the Academy Award for Best Makeup a record seven times from a record eleven nominations. 11:26 - The makeup and practical effects in this movie are what sold it. For 1981, this was incredible stuff! It won the Best Makeup Oscar that year. 13:55 - Jack's ongoing decay through the movie was disturbingly accurate, and fascinated some of us with an appreciation of details. 17:01 - This. THIS is what made us young horror fans fall in love with this movie. The effects and David Naughton's acting during the transformation sold us 100%! I've lost my taste for horror movies over the decades, but this one will always have a special place in my kennel... ummm... heart. ;-) Oh... and for your amusement, look up "David Naughton Dr. Pepper." The ending is great. There's just enough of David in the werewolf to realize that if he makes one move toward Alex, he'll get gunned down and fulfill the 'killed by someone you love' decree. And having no closure or a long, boring wrap-up is refreshing.

My mom’s friend took me & we went to the 9:00 pm movie, so it was pretty late (around midnight)by the time I got home, which made it even creepier. I spent the night starting at my closet, waiting for Michael Myers to spring out of it & butcher me!🤣

I'm a touch younger, I saw Ghostbusters in the cinema, a old big theater with a balcony etc, when I was 13 also. Films that didn't condescend to the viewer, or wash out for marketing appeal, incredible experiences. We have so much great stuff now, of course, but everything has the tinge of product and there's a lack of culture. What I realise now is that in the 70s and 80s there was a great combination of filmaking craft and art , with big popular cinema. I don't mean just technical craft, but the art of a director.

To this day, given Wolf-David briefly calming down, right before "going for Alex" (for want of a better way of putting it), it is my firm belief that David’s consciousness heard Alex say she loved him, but he knew that if they were together she would be in too much danger! Their love made him lunge at her, knowing he'd be immediately shot & killed; it was suicide-by-cop, to protect the woman he loved!

I wouldn't say it's a comedy, it just happens to be well written and VERY funny. Comedy is often used to ramp down tension in horror films, the problem is that most horror writers have a terrible sense of humor so most of the time the 'jokes' fall flat on their faces.

I saw this as a kid and it freaked me out so bad I left the theater. Something about the howl and growling still puts me on edge. It's a tortured sound like the creature is in hell on earth. The point about being responsible for the deaths pushing you to kill yourself is a good one but the other side is that a person could learn to live with it and embrace the beast becoming a monster of a person as well as a werewolf on the full moon.

The comedy, the horror...imagine how difficult it must have been to get the TONE right, both by the writer and the director. You'd have to be questioning yourself the whole time. "Does this veer to much into comedy? Into horror?" You had to ask if the audience would be willing to follow your creative decisions. Fair to say they succeeded superbly.

First off guys … LOVE this channel!! You crack me up!! With AAWL … it’s a dark comedy/horror and it freaked the bejesus out of me as a kid … I may have stolen my parents VHS copy and took it to my room … and then began a lifelong trauma … the scariest frickin werewolf I’ve ever seen on film … What a lot of folks miss … with the ending … is that Alex never truly believed David … until he lunged at her snarling and she saw him as the wolf … then his dead fully human body … tears for his death but also guilt for not believing him … 👍🏼 Keep up the good work and awesomeness!

Director to Rick Baker just before the transformation scene: "Okay, Rick, take it away..."

Rick Baker did the transformation effects. It took a couple of months to plan the technical aspects of shooting the scene, and it took a week to complete the filming, according to google. Another fun fact--the cab driver is Alan Ford, who played Brick Top in the movie Snatch.

The BEST transformation scene in the history of Werewolf movies. The way it's SUPPOSED to be. Muscles stretching, bones breaking, the whole sha-bang. Looks and sounds very painful indeed. Fortunately, they never remember it. They just wake up naked and confused. God, I miss real werewolf movies.

A great movie that remembers that lycanthropy is a curse, that the Werewolf is an agent of chaos and that everything is better with Ghoul Na$i$.

I agree. There was more than one werewolf the people in that village were familiar with. "This place is cursed" is something you'd say after your second werewolf experience, not your first. After your first, you just say, "Fuck! A werewolf!"

Another rather excellent 80's werewolf film is _The Company of Wolves_ (1984), directed by Neil Jordan. It's a surreal, dreamlike take on the story of _Little Red Riding Hood._

This is a legendary classic horror movie that inspired so many later movies, especially in the field of special effects. Rick Baker did the practical and make up effects and won so many awards in the years to come. The transformation scene was the first of it's kind and was later used in many other movies and even in the Michael Jackson Thriller video. I loved the fact that for the first time we saw a werewolf that looked more wolf that human. And the mix of horror and comedy made the movie seem very surreal.

Imagine "mama slapper" Curtis wearing his goofy banana suit throughout the entire movie like he did in the beginning. 😁

I really love how this movie has such an inconsistent tone - horror, gore, and .... comedy? There wasn’t anything like it.

For 1981, this was a fresh take on a werewolf movie. Funny, scary, great transformation scene, etc. You mentioned it kinda...it showed us the point-of-view from the human/werewolf dealing w/ this fact. Another similarly good werewolf movie is Jack Nicolson's "Wolf."

Full moons that occur for two nights are actually called Blue Moons. It makes sense in this movie with the song Blue Moon and in some shots of the full moon, you can see it looks a bit blue.

This movie was released August 21st 1981 (my 5th birthday) I saw it fo the first time when I was 6 and it gave me nightmares for months but since getting over that it's been my number one horror movie of all time. Your reaction video is the best one I've ever seen. Keep up the good work Guys you rock.

Prior to this, the lead actor David Naughton starred in "Midnight Madness" (1980), a very fun comedy about an all night scavenger hunt through L.A., which was also the acting debut of Michael J. Fox.

"An American Werewolf In London" is one of the greatest horror films ever made. Joe Dante's "The Howling" from the same year...which actually features a colony of werewolves...is very different but equally brilliant.
