G’day Mate...Another fantastic upload. I was inspired by your earlier ammonia extraction experiment using Ammonia Sulphate and Calcium Hydroxide the other week and used the same funnel preventative suck back setup but used a ice bath to maximise yield. It was very successful....My observation was that by the calcium sulphate (drops out of solution) is a lot easier to heat and bubble ammonia gas into a very cold DH2O solution . After collecting I used some 3A molecular Sieve to increasing the concentration. A hydrometer is a good way to determine concentration.

Maybe, if the solution already made was used to collect the new, you could have a more concentrated solution without further work as it has such a high affinity(sp) to water and as you said, cooling would also help with that too.

Gday thanks for the video. It was very interesting! I saw the video of the Canadian guys running a car off ammonia, I think it was 25% strength. I was hoping to find a way of making aqueous ammonia easily! I was wondering how do you test the ammonia level? Also what is the product that is left in the beaker? Does it have any uses?

Glad you enjoyed! The concentration here can be measured by titration or by density measurements (with a hydrometer), depending on what you've got available. The by-product of the reaction is sodium sulfate (with very little practical use in my opinion), though there will always be leftover sodium hydroxide and ammonium sulfate in the starting mixture, so it won't be pure anyway.

@ScrapScience

You can heat at any stage, but the reaction might be more controlled if you only heat it towards the end of the process. You only need to heat the solution to near its boiling point (100 C) to finish it off.

I'm afraid I'm no expert on sourcing addition funnels. I ordered two from China on ebay before I got this one and both arrived completely shattered (got refunded though, so that's all good). If you're in Australia, Deschem is a very reliable ebay store (and relatively cheap) for a lot of glassware. If not, I probably won't be much help.
@markshort9098
@markshort9098 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScrapScience deschem doesn't post to Australia anymore because to much glassware was being stopped by customs, or thats what they told me a few weeks ago but i ordered a heap of stuff from nashiglass and had no problem, ben something has better prices on many things but postage is painfully slow and expensive unless it's a big order, i hope the extra slow postage doesn't result in a higher risk of breakage since i have a 300 dollar order coming from him.. when that order comes in I'm going to send a message to deschem and let them know the size of the orders and that they got through so hopefully they start sending to Australia again albeit i won't be needing any glassware for a long time..

Considering everything going on at the moment.. I'm not too fussed about the AusPost delays either. Things eventually arrive Cheers for sharing this method :) Did you source your sulfate from bunnings, or had some on the side ready? Funnel bubbler is a ripper. Did any suck back nearly occur, or nah?
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, despite delays, the post still gets through eventually. Ammonium sulfate from Bunnings seems to be perfectly fine for this reaction, I've never had any problems with the impurities and all the products left behind in the flask are highly soluble in water so cleanup is easy too. I was very much expecting the gas to attempt suck back at some point (and even made a big deal about it in the original video footage), but to my surprise, the gas was absorbed at pretty much exactly the same rate as it was made. Pretty unusual though, I'd definitely expect suck back to occur most of the time.

Would ammonia be difficult to produce from wood or perhaps sawdust ?
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience 11 ай бұрын
Nitrogen is usually only present in wood at a concentration of much less than 0.5%, so I'd imagine you'd have a great deal of difficulty doing this. Maybe some types of wood have more nitrogen than others, or maybe you're thinking of something else? Ammonia was notoriously difficult to prepare before the invention of the Haber-Bosch process, and there's really no easy way to extract or produce it, sadly.

Question. I think that because the Na is a stronger base than the ammonia, it takes the Sulfate to be NaS or something and the ammonia is released? --> NaS + water + ammonia (gas) Rock on! You're vids are awesome, someday I'll get my head around all this haha
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, precisely! The NaOH is a much stronger base than NH3, so it sets up an equilibrium which favours the production of ammonia. Seeing as the ammonia leaves as a gas, the reaction can be pushed very near to completion. Sulfate is actually the SO4(2-) ion rather than S(2-), so the overall reaction is: (NH4)2SO4 + 2NaOH -> Na2SO4 + 2H2O + 2NH3

Hi great video Now can you tell me the different Between generating and extracting Please
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess I probably use the terms interchangeably sometimes, but 'generating' should refer to the production of a compound from stuff that doesn't contain the desired compound (in this case, I'm generating ammonia because the starting material doesn't have any actual ammonia in it). 'Extracting' however, should refer to separating a compound from a mixture or substance which already contains it (such as extracting the caffeine from coffee, because the actual caffeine is already present).

While the Ostwald process one of my favourite reactions and I'd love to have a go at it, I don't currently have the setup to get it working I'm afraid. My plan is slightly similar though, hopefully I'll be able to oxidise the ammonia to nitrate, just with some less extreme conditions (and likely a much lower yield).

I really liked that video, they even made the platinized fibre themselves I think, pretty cool. As for my ammonia oxidation, it's all about more electrochemistry! I found a file on sciencemadness detailing the process pretty well, and it definitely doesn't seem too tricky to copy: www.sciencemadness.org/whisper/files.php?pid=470124&aid=55681 I still need to make some potassium hydroxide though, which I'll hopefully get around to relatively soon.

@@ScrapScience Did you know that ozone also works for this ? If I read correct you can also do ozone electrochemically and then pour/bubble it into the ammonia solution.
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience 3 жыл бұрын
@Telectronics While ozone is definitely capable of oxidising ammonia, the reaction itself is pretty tricky to get going on a reasonable scale, especially with low concentrations of ozone. I think Extractions&Ire tried this at some stage and got basically zero yield after hours of pumping ozone from his generator. I might give it a go at some stage, but it doesn’t look particularly promising from what I’ve seen.

Who can you get a good idea of how concentrated it is, and if it to diluted I guess you boil of the water slowly.
@ScrapScience
@ScrapScience Жыл бұрын
You can measure the density with a hydrometer, and infer the concentration of ammonia from that. Otherwise, you can also titrate the solution to get an exact measurement. You can’t concentrate ammonia by boiling I’m afraid. The ammonia will come out of solution before the water starts boiling. The only way to concentrate it is to continue adding more ammonia gas to your sample.
