Hey, so before I talk about anything else I want to say that I was interviewed on my friend Coca’s podcast, if you’d like a little insight into my creative process and shit I think you’ll really enjoy it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erhoiZWXsdbXZok.html I’ve also started selling merch, for anyone who wanted to support my channel financially without using my Patreon. Hiring artists to do the designs for me since I want them to actually be decent looking, gonna make a video once I’ve got a couple more: www.designbyhumans.com/shop/ShammyTV/ OKAY now that that’s out of the way, I should explain what made this video take so long, aside from the obvious fact that it’s roughly 4 times as long as the reviews I used to make when I was posting monthly: TL;DR - While working on this review I was dealing with some personal mental health problems, partially brought on by stress and partially brought on by the fact that I had to put down two childhood dogs during the writing process. Throw in the fact that I was talking about a game that I’m really not passionate about at this point and you get a recipe for a 4 month creation timeline, and that’s not even mentioning my steadily rising stupid level of detail that I put into these reviews in both the editing and writing process, as far as I can remember there are more hidden jokes in this review than normal ones. Which leads me to another point - I’m not going to be making any more long form reviews like this one in the near future, and if I ever make one again it’s going to be for a game I *really* care about so that i don’t run out of steam halfway through working on it. I know these reviews are a bit contentious with my audience, I’ve heard an equal number of people saying they prefer either the shorter and longer reviews, but for my own sake I’m going to be moving back to around 15-20 minute videos. My goal for this year is to upload at least 1 high quality video per month, and I’m very excited about the three I’ve got lined up after this one. Sorry this took me so long to make, I’ve been staring at it for so long I don’t even know if it’s bearable to watch. Hope you liked it. Also, for anyone who isn’t aware, I do a bi-weekly podcast with 3 of my friends called “Please Stop Talking.” The first episode was pretty rough but I think we’ve really found our footing, and if you like my reviews I think there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy it. Here’s a recent episode about the Game Awards: soundcloud.com/pstpodcast/please-stop-talking-12-the-game-awards-2017 Thank you to CREO for letting me use their song Afterglow in this review, you should check them out: soundcloud.com/creotheband Now for other links: Twitter: twitter.com/ShammyTV Patreon: patreon.com/shammy Twitch: twitch.tv/shammyyt Second Channel: kzfaq.info/love/1LpNC2yPRYaXhEH8H8n1FA

Your review has offended me on a deep level! I have rebuttals for every single point you made! But rather then do that, here's a recipe for cake. 2 cups sugar 2 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 2 tablespoons Instant ClearJel® or cornstarch 3/4 cup Double-Dutch Dark Cocoa or Dutch-process cocoa 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons espresso powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 4 large eggs 3/4 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 1/4 cups water FILLING 2 cups chopped semisweet chocolate or chocolate chips 3/4 cup cream (light, whipping, or heavy) or milk, or a combination* Flavors of your choice (see filling directions below) *Hint: Since you need 4 ounces of cream for the icing, and you'll most likely buy an 8-ounce container, use 4 ounces cream in the filling supplemented with 2 ounces of milk. ICING 1 1/3 cups chopped semisweet chocolate or chocolate chips 1/2 cup cream (light, whipping, or heavy) Instructions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease and flour (or grease, then line with parchment, then grease again) two 8" x 2" round cake pans. Note: These pans need to be at least 2" tall; if you have non-standard, shorter 8" pans, substitute 9" round pans. To make the cake: Whisk together the dry ingredients. Add the eggs, oil, vanilla, and water, beating until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Bake the cakes for 35 to 38 minutes (a bit less if you use a 9" pan), or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn them out of the pans to cool completely on a rack. To make the filling: Combine the chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat until the cream is very hot, and the chocolate very soft. Stir to melt the chocolate completely, reheating very briefly if necessary. Now you have a choice. You may either flavor the filling all one flavor, or use a different flavor for each layer of filling. For all one flavor, use 3 tablespoons of your favorite liqueur - Frangelico (hazelnut), Kahlua (coffee), or Framboise (raspberry) are all good choices. Or try 2 tablespoons rum. Alternatively, add 1 tablespoon espresso powder; or flavor to taste with a bottled extract (coconut, peppermint, cherry, almond...) To mix and match flavors, divide the filling into three parts, and flavor each differently to taste, with an extract; or with about 1 tablespoon liqueur for each flavor. Divide the cooled layers in half horizontally, to make four layers. Place one layer on a serving plate, and spread with filling. Repeat with the next two layers. Top with the final cake layer. To make the icing: Combine the chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat until the cream is very hot, and the chocolate very soft. Stir to melt the chocolate completely, reheating very briefly if necessary. Pour and spread the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drip over the edges and down the sides. Once it's done dripping, you may smooth the sides with an icing spatula, if desired. Allow the cake to rest, covered with a cake cover (or a big turned-over bowl) until the chocolate is set; overnight is good, though several hours are sufficient.

The amount of effort he puts into these is frankly amazing. Like, when he takes a Polaroid, you can watch the picture slowly develop, and it's such a small detail that I bet most people didn't even notice it, and I don't doubt that it took a bunch of effort to do. So he put a bunch of effort into a tiny joke in a little square that most people won't even see just because of consistency and being funny. Damn, Shammy, you really ARE the man. Owl. Whatever.

Okay I sure as fuck wasn't expecting you to go into the thematic analysis of this game. Like, dude, you put way more effort into analyzing the script than it deserved. I mean ngl I'm glad you did it, it was super interesting, thoughtful, and considered. And holy shit I'm glad someone finally explicated (in video) why symbolism can just become meaningless if you pile enough vague shit on top of it. It's the kind of thing that makes your videos just real fun and nice to watch. That and in spite of the tone you're still clearly giving them a chance. I mean I sure as fuck never bought No Guy Buy, but a dev that clearly cares about their product should be commended at least to some degree, even if what they've created is deeply flawed. At the same time, I really enjoy the fact that you don't like make any bones about the fact that, no, this doesn't excuse the launch or the quality of the game itself. ... wait i mean fuk u ur gaey for lieking helo gams unsubscribble btw i haet owls

So I played the NEXT update a few months back and ended up rewatching this video through yet another Shammy binge rewatch. You know all those possible interpretations linked to the Bible and Tarot cards? What half the video spends trying to make smart, not shitty relations and commentary between the game and real life themes? Yeah it turns out that 16 is just repeated ad nauseum because the simulation had 16 seconds left of run time in its own reality before it was shut down. Even though he hates this game, Shammy managed to actually overestimate this game. What a testament to this game's bullshit.

References in a narrative like Spec Ops add to its core, whereas the ones made in No Man's Sky build around it. Your review takes full advantage of this and used it to make an overwhelming amount of hilarious spoken and visual gags that unlike the game, do build to a singular conclusion... the game is not very good. @@musikalniyfanboichik So essentially, Joseph had done some questionable things in the past, especially regarding his attitude, and responses. Though I would like to state outwardly that Joseph is usually very fair in his assessment. Now, if you remember, he came out with a video on SOMA about three years ago. And in that video he basically conflates his own subjective feelings of him not being scared when playing the game with an objective standpoint, that point being that "SOMA isn't a horror game, because it's not scary". Then people in the comments disagreed with him somewhat (this is usually something that happens on most video essay videos that at first gain praise and likes, but over time people disagree with, even if it doesn't obviously show). It was clear to some that he only played through the game once, this is because several times in his critique he states that there are no choices for certain parts, when in fact there actually is, also showing that he didn’t know there were alternate paths in the game you could take instead, such as destroying or not destroying the WAU. Then he stated in that video, that he was gonna make another video to explain why horror games don't work, which is insane if you know anything about the complexity of the genre that would be quite difficult. Though I’m not saying it can’t be done, I’m just saying you're going to need about a few hours of thorough discussion to explore an immense genre. Then the new video came out, called "Why Horror Games Don't Scare Me", and it was only around thirteen minutes, which tells you immediately that the video was more of a lengthy Tweet, than anything substantial. During the video he says words that downgrade horror games as well, words like ‘spooky’, ‘startled’, or ‘creepy’. He also says a lot of nonsense words; y’know the type of words you read in a flashy vacation pamphlet or see online in Polygon articles, words like ‘really’, ‘genuinely’, ‘actually’, ‘trully’. He will conflait these words instead of being more specific, saying “Horror movies still scare me, sure it has to be above a certain level of camp and actually try to scare instead of startle-”. In the entirety of his video, it seems to be a more accurate assessment of why Joseph doesn't enjoy horror games, but seems to be fine with horror movies, and, to a lesser extent, horror books, which is the relative difference between effort and energy expended versus emotional investment across different media. It will take more effort and energy to actively absorb the atmosphere and connect to the characters of SOMA, and explore the environmental storytelling and internalize all of it whilst allowing yourself to be vulnerable to the dread than passively taking in the tension, and horror, in movies. You can engage on a deeper level (and like any well-made story, horror or not, it gets better when interacted with on that deeper level of understanding), and doing so requires more effort, but still less than interactive consumption of a game, at least on average. He approaches horror games the same way as he does movies, expecting the horror to work without anymore than a cursory effort on his part to make himself vulnerable to it. Overall Joseph’s arguments are vast oversimplifications, perpetrated in an attempt to mask his subjective stances as something more substantial, concrete, and objective without committing to any real objective claim. He simply doesn’t enjoy or understand horror games because of his arbitrary subjective reasons that he states are definitive, self-evident claims and declares them inherent failures of the genre. Despite the fact it’s never true, I think you and me both agree that just because you respawn in a horror game, that doesn’t always mean that the horror is diminished, part of the horror is being found, or chased; or on your wit’s end with nowhere left to hide. Being killed is not the horror, it’s the dread leading up to the scary reality that is failure, and the subsequent triumph. After this video he responds again, making a video called “Subjectivity Is Implied”, where he fundamentally mixes that implications of subjectivity in both conversation (say after watching a movie and sharing your thoughts, for example: “I thought that was really bad”, which isn’t outwardly stating something like “That was really poorly crafted.”) and “in the basics of communication.”. If you also can’t tell that’s a quite bold and condescending take, especially from him of all people, again he is stating that if you don’t understand it’s subjective (which subjectivity isn’t always implied in a conversation so simply, it’s dependant on word usage, as stated before about the two separate statements) then you also don’t understand the basics of communication. With this claim he puts all the blame from himself, onto his audience. He also says that “you wouldn’t want that if you fully understood what the result would be.” when talking about the fairness of comparing real life conversations versus scripted videos, glaring past the point that in his previous video his failure to communicate properly about how he felt, and what objectively is, subsequently blurred the line because of his naivety to understand his poor script writing. He also brings up multitudes of comments while making strawman and funny accents to mock the commenters from his video. He also states “if your desire is a video of only objective facts then you are looking for a dry list of mechanics, and low level terminology.” this is so wrong on so many levels, when people like Ahoy, E;R, Shadiversity, SsethTzeentach, History Buffs, Inigo Gaming, Matthewmatosis, Vsauce, Internet Historian, or CrowbCat alike make videos on Gaming, Science, Movies, and Comics they can still make their objective standpoints on certain mechanics, information, history, and ‘terminology’ extensively fun on unimaginable lengths, some push their content to being more open commentary freeform explanations, most make edutainment, and some also attempt to explain why something might or might not function while also trying to be funny at it. All of these people express their objective facts with certain amounts of interest/comedy without always just stating what they feel. If you can’t tell most if not all of the people I’ve referenced are freakin far and away from being “dry” as he so condescendingly puts it. Again, people can mix their objective facts and subjective opinions, actually that’s what most people do on most sites in order to express something to a wider audience. Presenting facts, data, and research, then offering a conclusion based on how they might have felt on it, or a natural conclusion based on a particular standpoint or prerequisite. He also stated that “No opinion is truly worthless.”, which for one, again he’s using awful word usage like ‘truly’ again, truly worthless? What does that mean? And two, if my opinion is that eels are just electric bananas then yeah, my opinion is pretty fucking meaningless. It’s asinine to assume that an opinion can’t be ‘worthless’, especially because analyzing the worth of an opinion anyway is subjective in nature! Overall his tone is outwardly antagonistic and blatantly ignorant towards what people are actually saying, with broad generalizations of people’s comments on the previous video. Coming off as more dismissive than understanding. Outwardly stating that it’s up to the viewer to tell whether an opinion is subjective or objective without actually changing his language or word usage to help said people but instead making fun of them. He thinks people want him to preface his statements by saying ‘in my opinion’, but in reality it’s not what people are saying, nor is it what people are asking for. He shows an example of the uselessness of this word usage anyway though, but uses it incorrectly at the 7:30 point, you don’t need to say, “in my experience” because it’s redundant, you just need a small qualifier, like ‘I think’. He also uses the phrase “in my opinion”, in the sentence “In my opinion this would lead to unnecessary clutter when writing and recording scripts for videos.” He’s failed to realise that this statement is objective, not subjective, you don’t need to say “in my opinion this would lead to unnecessary clutter” it does, objectively. Because these are wrongly incorporated words squished in between objective statements that don’t need them, you ham sandwich. The point I’m getting at is that you could make your language even more swift with proper word usage, but he isn’t willing. The part of being a writer is being creative with your word usage other than just saying “in my opinion”, if you think you can’t go any further than that, then you are sorely mistaken. tldr: If you want a more comprehensive deep-dive on (even more) issues, then I would suggest the videos EFAP did on them. The podcast breaks everything down pretty perfectly, so if you have any other questions or quarrels go there, or ask me I guess. I understand why people would feel hurt, disappointed, betrayed, etc. by HG. I also appreciate that as much as you dislike the game, you're not maligning the company. They're not EA or Ubisoft or Konami, their mistakes weren't born of malice or unabated greed, just hype and its backlash. I hope they can recover, take these lessons to heart, and use them make a legitimately good game from the outset.

Dude Shammy, you sure you're alright? After all that shit storm I do think you deserve a break, I don't have any problems waiting 5 months for a video since they're full of content, well-written and clever moments that makes me laugh even when I revisit them, take care of yourself buddy, there are people who supports you!

Halfway through this video I realized something... This entire game is just the worst part of Spore
@DevDreCW
@DevDreCW 6 жыл бұрын
Man Spore has alot of fundamental problems, but at least it did something truly interesting. Maxis could still be seen in that game, if only just a little bit. NMS is just a culimination of all these crafting survival games and the problems they all have in 1 overpriced package.

Oh man since I rewatch this video occasionally your comment on how the biggest exocraft moves so slowly vs the rocks “if the don’t out run you” is pretty funny now that they added ‘living rocks’ that run away

I really liked your serious-snarky analysis of the various connections in the game. I know you said you won't do more reviews of the game, but man... I could listen to your analysis for a long time. I hope you do come back to it, one day. Keep up the good work!
