I absolutely agree @samtriglone8858 - I think we have lost sight of what is important, and now just more is better. More bedrooms, more kitchen, more bathrooms, more tiles, more car spaces.... etc. But none of that makes any of us happier, and it usually gets in the way of the things that do... like being able to spend a weekend with family under the trees and birds.. As for the close neighbour, i am lucky that we are great friends... but maybe the interaction betweent the two houses is why that relationship is so good (we have other spaces that are more private if we need that anyway :-).

I quite like the outdoor toilet idea as well. Quite genius how it "forces" you to get outside for a brief moment.

Outside toilets in the distant past were for the collection and use of poop and urine on the land for cultivation and conservation, it was the towns an cities that changed that idea.

I'm from Polynesia and the older style homes also have the toilet room outside. Some toilet rooms are attached to the main house, just like this home. Some toilet rooms + bathroom are set away from the main house... but still modern. I actually prefer both of these.

I'm with you, and I think many of us are, regarding the outdoor toilet :)

thanks @chrismults1500. All the kind responses to the house have been very much appreciated. We received a lot of suspicion from friends and family before it was finished; what about resale?, privacy?, insects?, getting wet when walking from the car? (a funny concern since we live in Western Australia where it never rains for longer than 5 minutes) - but we figured the house just needed to suit us. We think the outcome has been really great. Its nice to see that people agree.

It is a unique home for sure. The “outdoor” toilet is actually only a few steps away from the bedroom, so it’s a kind of best of both worlds. 😁

It’s an amazing concept indeed, centred around the garden. The toilet is actually very close to the bedroom, almost ensuite-close 😃

Hi Philip, the couches are by King furniture. The model is Uno. They are great because the arms and backs can be pulled off and rearranged in different positions.

Aussie mozzies 😂 You’re a 100% right to raise that question and if I remember correctly Andrew mentioned to me that they have provisions for installing a fly screen.

Ahh mosquitos.. When we are in mosquito season, we find that if we just close the doors during dusk then they arent much of a problem. We have wall mounted fans over the beds to keep them away just incase, but the most amazing thing i have learned is that on their own volition, they dont fly high enough to fly into the house via the skylights, but when stuck inside they do fly out (especially if the indirect evaporative air conditioner is running and pushes them out). Its quite amazing. We really didnt want screens because they really kill the airflow. Having lived in the house for a few years, they havent been a real problem inside. - And @ProjectifiAU is correct - we made provisions for screens to be installed - just havent needed them.

I mentioned it because mozzies absolutely love me and I cannot sit outside at all in the evenings in Summer in Perth as I would be covered in bites (I once had 64 in one evening 😫). They really spoil my Summer socialising lol. I agree that screens would spoil the air flow. We find that happens in our home too. I’m now going to re-watch this video as I enjoyed it so much the first time around 👍🏼

Yes i don't think it'd work as well if we had very cold nights here... But washing hands: the toilet has a basin in the top of the cistern. You can see the chrome faucet on top. It actually runs the water through the faucet, and then drains into the cistern, so the hand washing water is recycled for toilet flushing. A bit of a water saving feature. And space saver too.

The toilet has a basin on the top. I've seen these mostly in Japanese home videos.

Hi weiweiweiwei, We have made sure that there isnt any standing water along the stream . Water is all channelled through a little watercourse, and then the frogs and dragonflies do the rest. There are 4 species of frogs who live on the property. They spend time in the water and in the garden. We made little frog houses for them to live in so they are safe from preditors. I think it has worked well. We dont have any more mosquitos than other properties in the area.

The roof is corrugated steel sheet, Then sarking, 2x layers of fibreglass insulation (one of those layers is acoustic insulation also), an air gap and then an aluminium composite ceiling.

We were very fortunate to have a permanent surface-water spring which produces a lot of water. The spring is piped into the pond, and then at the base of the pond is a sump which allows us to take water for irrigation. The whole site is irrigated from the spring without pumps (some plants are above the spring, and need to be watered by hand admittedly, but thats no problem). We had investigated tanks, but given we had so much water already we find a benefit in our case. - but this is an unusual situation.

Well Erica is not an architect. But what she describes is no different from an ideal client/architect relationship. There are actual client requirement, and then there should be room for the architect to achieve those requirements while accessing all their skill and experience to meet those requirements in the best possible way. This results in far better outcomes than if a client just tells an architect how to do their job. That would be a waste of expertise, and a lost opportunity.

That's a really important part of the building that didn't get picked up in the video. We built the house ourselves, our family and friends - only hiring occasional tradespeople. But also the house is small (for Perth) at 125m2. And is only 2 bedroom and a single bathroom. This all made the house affordable. It was built for price of the average starter home. The land was also relatively affordable because it had so many problems. Certainly an advantage being an architect... But not financially! :-)

@@AtBoyne my father was an architect so I giggled when someone replied saying you might be well off financially because you were one. Ha!

Hi @Soushi123 - Its been an interesting learning experience. I had made provision to install screens if it was absolutely necessasary, but really didnt want to because screens stop almost all airflow. So we went without and adopted a wait-and-see approach. After living in the house for two years flies have been no problem, I would have been bothered by a fly on less than a handful of ocassions, and they just fly out of the house if we swat at them, and the same for mosquitos. We do shut the doors for mosquito time at dusk, but otherwise it hasnt really been an issue. One of the cool things is that the skylights are higher than mosquitos fly, so they never come in, but they do seem to get caught in the thermal updraft and do fly out. We also use fans over the beds incase any insects are in the house at night - mosquitos are terrible at flying, so they dont fly in air disturbed by fans..... Now I have begun to wonder if we as home owners have been sold something which actually traps insects in the house!

Yes all personal taste, but i dont think we have an obsession with exposed concrete. The only visible concrete is in the tubes, and they were chosen because they could be placed inside and out, to help break down the edge of the building. The material treatments are simple; let wood be wood, let brick be brick, steel be steel and concrete be concrete. Each of these materials have their own qualities... I do tend to agree with you that concrete is over used, especially when it is chosen wholely as a decorative finish, but i dont think this is the case here... A big positive is that there is barely any paint in the house, so far less maintenance.

@abarai72 - Babette was careful not to film that part, but absolutely a house for kids. I think it interesting that for a house which was intended to blend into the natural environment, that the child wants to spend all their time out of it.... but i suppose that was the point from the beginning. They love all the levels and terraces, the frogs and the birds. playing in the gravel or digging holes... The other thing which has been really successful is that the house doesnt have any walls in the main part of the house - its very transparent, so it allows us to monitor whats going on without getting in the way!
