This is my hike at Douglas Pass, which is toward the western slopes, and just a short drive north and a little west from Grand Junction. It's a very accessible hike with ample area to park off of 139 and the entire hike is gravel road, meaning there isn't really any route finding to speak of. The beginning of the hike is a bit of an incline, but nothing terrible, and then it's a few miles out and back with views mainly to the west into Utah, and some north and south within the Colorado mountains. If you want to experience a really decent hike with good views to get your feet wet into the activity, this is a good one. You don't need high clearance vehicles to get to the trailhead, and you can make the hike as short or as long as you would like. Just beware that off the road is some private property and an FAA station toward the end, so do not wander off the path onto the private property nor cause any damage/interference with the FAA station (it has it's own warning signs but I'm including mine). Overall, I really like this trail for its accessibility and decent views despite not being a terribly high elevation trail like those at Loveland or Independence Pass, and it was not crowded at all. There were two other cars at the trailhead and I was the only one on the trail minus seeing two four-wheelers early on. Otherwise I was by myself.
