We're traveling on the Trans Mexico route from Mazatlan to Durango, and eating as many Gorditas as possible. In this episode, we ride further up into the Sierra Madres and have an unfortunate encounter with a shifty kid looking to steal our phones. It was a spooky moment, but in the end, nothing happened. The threat of danger stayed with me all day, however. I've been robbed before (machete encounter in Guatemala) and it's scary as hell. I like to think that Mira Magic got us out of this debacle. She's our protector. We met one bad guy in Mexico, but it's the hundreds of other friendly encounters that will forever stick with me. VIVA MEXICO!

I spent 4 years in Mexico and got robbed 3 times for a total loss of about $5K. Three men came on my boat at 2am and stole my new dinghy motor. Two men came on my boat during the day and took my generator. The worse was being held hostage and released for $500 dollars. Never got robbed once during 50 in the USA.

When you travel in Bali it’s a pretty common thing that the police puts up a road block and comes up with something to get money out of you. The first time this happened to me I was so shocked and just payed whatever they asked for. Then the locals told me what a pain this is and that the best thing to do would be to pretend you didn’t see them and keep driving. I couldn’t believe it but the next time it happened I did exactly that and guess what… nobody came chasing after me. Because yes, they were looking for an easy catch. Chasing someone would be too much hassle. 😉

I have had similar experiences in Baja. Staying cool, joking, and pretending you don't quite get it eventually leads to them giving up on the dumb gringo. Has worked thus far but it is not fun. Having valuable stuff does not help. Saludos y abrazos :-)

I’ll give you a pro tip: Here in Mexico its an actual meme that if you come across a “military man wearing sneakers or sport shoes” is always a bad sign. A true solider or policeman is never going to wear that kind of footwear, only military boots

Hey guys! Fellow gringo here! I lived in Mexico for about 8 years, it was an amazing time and the people and food are amazing! 90% of the time nothing happens, and knowing Spanish will make that almost 99% of the time that people will respect you and let you do your thing..Caution though.. I was living in Chiapas and some cyclists from Europe got robbed and killed, unfortunately, it was a big deal on local news as things like that don't normally happen. So be safe and stay near Coutas and bigger cities if you can, enjoy the amazing Mexican landscape and I hope you guys the best!

Another great video Ryan. I'm glad you used good judgment and travel wisdom to deal with that one potential robber. Ive been luck to travel all over the world and I will say this: for every one potential robber there are thousands upon thousands of locals world wide that are helpful, kind, generous, full of love and share great energy. "The world is a family". I love Mexico and all the wonderful and friendly locals I have met there. Man, your meals alone are taking me back to great memories. Best of luck on your journey. Cant wait for the next episode.

This is something that I sometimes think about. We want to cycle around the world and you hear a lot of stories from people who have been robbed or similar. It's WAY more common to hear of people that did a big trip without anything sketchy at all happening, but the rare bad occurrences that people report often stick with you as sort of a "what if" mentality.... We've only toured extensively here in Australia and the most we've had to deal with is bad drivers in big pickup trucks (or "utes") - a couple of which tried to fight me... We've had a couple of bad vibes from sketchy people hanging out at a couple of campsites, but if we ever don't like the look of something, we just keep moving. I guess it's not an adventure without some sort of risk!

Sad to hear that you, John and Mira had to go through that experience. Bad people can be found everywhere sadly. Not just in Mexico, the States, Asia or Europe. Thievery and intimidation does not solely apply to any one country or region. I hope that this does not affect your worldview too much Ryan. it would be a pity to see that happen but in some ways understandable. Now to the riding. I say it is pretty damn good job to keep that pace up that amount of climbing with loaded bikes, and in Johns case; one very active Canine. I usually like a good climb, provided it is not too steep and I can maintain a decent pedalling pace up towards the top. Because I know that what comes after is usually worth the climb. A sweet fast downhill! I can only dream of climbing hills which are a multiday effort! Keep on turning those pedals Ryan, John and Mira!

As a woman solo bike tourer since more than 20 years, I know this feeling. Rarely, but too frequently in the same time, there’s a guy asking “”well, do you want some company tonight…?”. You think quickly about the right way to answer, politely but firmly, hiding your discomfort (sometimes your fear), and pray that he doesn’t follow you… Sometimes, you choose to skip stealth camping that night, just to calm down the slightly weird feeling inside and have a good sleep. It sucks, isn’t it? But I keep travel solo on bike, because that’s the best way to understand and appreciate people you visit!

Wow. You told this story at the live event the other day. Scary stuff. I think Mira might have saved you guys. Even thieves have a soft spot for Mira! Ya never know. But like you say, isolated incident. The vast majority of Mexico & Mexicans are safe. 🇲🇽 Still, glad you 3 made it thru that sketchy moment unscathed. Looking forward to the next vid in the series! 👍🏼

the vast majority of Americans are ok...just don't ride through dangerous places that ALL U.S. cities are know for. When Americans point a negative finger at other countries they fail to look in their own back yard...

@@silviosuarez495 That was exactly my point. EVERY Country can have such potential dangers, but the vast majority of Countries & places are much safer than anything you read about online. Just as one should never worry about shark attacks or getting hit by lightening just because you saw a video online about it. 😉

Absolutely love your bike packing trips! Quick question, how often do you stop for a snack, when on multiday trips? Thanks!

Ryan I shared your video with my father and he said that the town of Copala is not that far from his home town of Concordia. The town name of Copala means "Tree gum or sap" its known for the gum tree sap to make chewing type gum and other products. The river you crossed before arriving in Copala is a river I have played in as a boy and as recent as 1998 when I last went back to Concordia to my grandmother funeral. If you even travel to mazatlan again or Concordia my father and I have a. cousin who owns a hotel and a gas station in Mazatlan and in Concordia. Also if you ever go to La Paz in Baja California "Beautiful countryside and state" we have family there you can stay with. I truly can not believe what a small world this is. Never in a million years I thought I would be watching some random video and see the town of Concordia on KZfaq. Stay healthy my friend and glad you are recharged and doing well again. P.S. Did you see the mountain on the way into copala called "Elephants Back"?? its before the river crossing.
