We take a way too early look at the 2024 rookies. Is Pili overmatched. Is Angel Reese who we thought she was? Has Cameron Brink been the best so far and will Catlin Clark figure it out?

Angel has clearly been the best Rookie the subtle shots at her getting old. They let the girl walk to Minnesota because they wanted a defensive minded team with SHOOTING from other positions. Everyone doesn’t need to shoot. So far 3 games I seen from her she can guard every position. With fine tuning she’s going to be at 14-16 and 10 a game.

Ain't that the truth he always has her on his thumb nails to get people to click on so he is using her popularity to get attention. He stays trashing her trying to make it seem the dog catcher can ball better. Seems like he short on content so he'll use the person he can abuse the most a black woman to garner clicks and minimal feed back. He appeals to people like himself who also love making uncontested disparaging remarks about black women because they know they won't be brought on the carpet for it. I have said it before most of these pop Warner sport channels are made up of people who couldn't play the game on a playground full of kindergartners and be competitive. None the less they want to hide behind their keyboards and chastise players game who play at a level they can't imagine. These people act like they are GM'S, coaches or pro scouts who know and have the expertise to evaluate talent. He likes kissing the ring of these white players so why doesn't he just talk about their flawless greatness and keep those that look like Reese out his mouth. It's simple he knows it's a consequence for criticism of those precious gems.

@@elliee3295you can make that argument but truth be told Angel like it or not is the only rookie who had a record breaking performance based on a players specialty coming out of college in Reese's case rebounding. Against pro level rebounding and the biggest team in the league Reese broke the rookie record for most offensive rebounds in the first week of the season 12. Reese came out of college blue collared and her work ethic and rebounding prowess has transfered right on over to the WNBA. Looks like the new Chairwoman of the board is here.

@@imsolarseeing yea she’s also breaking records in turnovers. Angel Reese is contributing to actual wins. 2 games in a row where she’s leading her team on runs in the 4th. Wins are most important to me but CC is a future star and she not even playing with Pros so it’s going to be rough for her. After watching all the games it’s clear her and Mitchell the only ones who belong.

After an early look or the first week of the season lets see which rookie did what they were known for in college. Only one rookie has broken a previously held WNBA record. Angel Reese now holds the WNBA record for offensive rebounds for a rookie over a two game i e. first week of the season. Now Catlin the magnificent did not break the scoring record for a rookie debut which held by Candace Parker was 35 points and 12 rebounds she did tie fourth with rookies in scoring for the first weak. Apparently Brink the shot block specialist did not break the shot block record for a rookie over two games or the first week. Looking at the specialty each rookie had on college. Reese yhe one you call a total dud and shouldn't be in the league had the best overall performance that translated her college specialty to the pro. Reese led the nation in offensive rebounds as a college players and apparently her dominance in this area of her game will continue. Rebounding takes will and effort. Reese shot a midrange jumper in high school she abandoned it all together after her Jones fracture and shin rod replacement so that maybe why she is working on a set shot and K suggest she adds a floater from the paint to utilize her quickness. You really need yo stop comparing her to Catlin, Brink, Rekia and others to try yo make her kook like she should be in the trash can because she is just a different type of player. I've seen ugly scorers in the NBA. I don't care how the ball gets in the basket as kong as it get through the nets. Reese and Brinks transition have been smooth they serm to be great fits with their team. You have a great broadcasting voice and very entertaining style of delivering your content.

Reese has played pretty well. But Dallas is without two of their best players. So, I think Reese has played weaker competition. Her elite rebounding will keep her solid all year. Brink is solid defensively already. The Sparks are way better when she is on the floor. Clark has things she can work on. Defense, midrange game, and turnovers. But she is going to probably be a top 10 scorer in the league right away.

Reese has played the best but I think Edwards has the most potential when Edwards gets comfortable she’s too skilled not to pass Angel. Angel has the motor but isn’t skilled. I see the league adjusting to her once they scout her look at Aliyah Boston this year. Edwards when she is playing always looks like she’s going harder than everyone on the floor. I didn’t know Edwards was as fast is she is. She is constantly beating every post player on both teams up the floor. Her first step off the dribble also reminds of Wilson.

What Sides was talking about with the 'long 2' was for Caitlin to take the shot when she get the ball or comes off the screen instead of trying to get to the 3 pt line. In the WNBA you don't generally have the time, the players are too long and fast and will recover. You get the ball at 20' shoot or pass, don't think you're going to step back out to 23' and not have someone on your shooting hand. You could see in her first game that was what she was doing. An open 2 with better than a heavily contested 3, doubly so with the shorter hot clock and good defenses not giving you tons of open looks to begin with. You could see her doing this in the first game on a few occasions. To break down: First game she did and played exactly like she did in College. Her usage rate was ridiculous and you cannot be a one woman show in the WNBA. That game put any thought of 'my fans are right' out of her head. That loss was 100% on her, as she single handedly won games in college she single handedly lost her first WNBA game and as much as her Stans disagree that style of play where she's the only playmaker every trip down the court will fail in the WNBA and will fail epically. Grade: F- Second game: Better, she did not demand the ball and passed or shot quicker. You could see some offense flow and she wasn't smothering it. She wasn't active off the ball and as always her defense left a lot to be desired but she got to a place where she could move forward. She was letting her shot come to. Still, she passes and watches which is a very bad habit she probably had her whole basketball life for fair enough reasons. Grade: C- Third game: Much better, she is still learning and adjusting to the speed and length of the WNBA but she is starting (stress baby step starting) to learn to move off ball. That is how in the end she will be able to create shots at this level. She is not the most athletic women on the court and she isn't just going to shoot over to juke WNBA guards. She needs to set herself up off ball with rotations, using screens, setting screens and rolling, getting ahead of the defensive rotation... She started to do that and she got more better shots and better looks for assists as the defense had to recover towards her. She should set in her mind something simple like 'pass and find screen' to get her out of the habit of watching and waiting for a return pass. 8 turnovers is not ideal but at least they weren't ball security turnovers like many in her first game, she just needs to learn WNBA windows and realize that defenses are longer, faster, and have seen everything before; and that works both ways as her receivers are faster longer and more capable. There have been a few places that there were passes that could be made at the WNBA level that would have been out of reach for her NCAA teammates. Grade: C+ Caitlin has a high basketball IQ and I'm sure she's seeing on tape what she needs to do. I expect she'll continue to improve and expect the team to continue to improve. Boston though needs to pick up her game. You cannot miss that many gimmies, you cannot be so flatfooted rebounding, and you cannot be so passive on defense. Last year She was touted as that years 'generational talent' and rookie of the year. I don't know what happened off season but she has put on a couple pounds it looks like and is not as athletically dynamic as her rookie season. She really needs to fire up her motor as she has an amazing amount of raw talent.

The pairing of Brink and Jackson will be very good for the Sparks. My only concern there is that while Miller is unquestionably a really good coach, he doesn't display a lot of innovation. Players are silo'd into positions, rim protectors, etc. I don't think Alyssa Thomas could have grown under his style. Brink and Jackson both handle the ball and are very athletic, interesting to see how Miller uses them together. Surprised you didn't include Kate Martin. She's played significant minutes in both games and has been very good. You are really downplaying Reese's impact to Chicago. She is very active and if she can learn not to bring the ball down when shooting (classic rookie mistake, se Holmgren, Chet) she would get her shot off much quicker.

You left out the Mystics Julie Vanloo from Belgium. In a way it's not fair, but she is technically a rookie and an awfully good one. As for Brink, she's clearly been given the green light by the coaching staff and, three games in, she's showing it. Really developing into a dominant presence. The Mystics are not a bad team, just have had a hard schedule to start. OTOH, the Fever are not particularly good and that works against Clark, although they did begin to show some promise in the second half of the second Liberty game (Boston is getting outplayed by everyone, in part is due to her not getting much support).
@colpul2103
@colpul2103 27 күн бұрын
Brink was the most WNBA ready. She is such a focused player with such good support around her. Imagine being able to just phone a future NBA hall of famer to ask some random question. I am impressed by her game pace; she doesn't do the rookie doe eye stand and watch nor the rookie out of control too fast trying to impress. She's playing at her game's current pace. Her mechanics and fundamental are impeccable; foot work, defensive spacing and angles, offensive court movement... She has tons of talent and the mental to get the most out of that. Reese is fine. She needs to give them a reason to guard her before blocking her out but I'm sure that will come. Reese is not the most athletic big, I'll bet her vertical is maybe 20" at the most, but she has a motor and does not give up on plays. She's just so scrappy that she makes her team scrappy and that has more value than most people know. She the type of player whose game is better than her stat line because of all the intangibles she brings every minute she's on the court. She develops just a competent 14-18' game and can hit 45+% from the elbow she will become a force even if not a scoring champion. If she doesn't her and Cardoso will be stepping all over each other when she returns. I think Pili will be fine. Her game reminds me so much of Charles Barkley. She's just a beast under the basket and she has a very nice 3 pt shot combined with the ability to hit open midrange looks. She's not going to be a amazing low post defender but will eat space and be a handful on the blocks to move. I think as she becomes more comfortable and adjusts to the length and strength of the WNBA she will be the steal of the draft and maybe the third best pick of '24 come hindsight in '34. Rickea Jackson if she gets in the right offense will be a monster. She is a pure thoroughbred, best pure athlete in the draft. If she were on the Aces right now she'd be Rookie of the Year even coming off the bench. LA needs a pushing point to get the most out of her. Rickea needs to develop a better halfcourt game, cutting, hitting open jumpers, a drive to midrange jumper...something to create her own shot without taking so much time backing defenders, something where she's hitting over 50% in the halfcourt. LA, you have Brink and Jackson get up and down more. Sheldon's fine I guess. She's not a star but a solid player with some defensive chops. She's probably a future defensive all league player but unless she develops a killer 3 pt spot up shot won't be making many other all star teams. She's the 2nd best defensive guard in the '24 draft, I'm just not super high on her offense or think there's the bones to develop beyond competent. At 5'10" she's not super quick and really needs some pounds. The likes of Plum will push her around physically if she does not get stronger. Honestly, I'd have not drafter her that high and probably drafted Muhl ahead of her, better defender and passer and has more offensive potential she didn't show in college. Aaliyah Edwards is looking like she could really develop into a solid 4 at this level. Don't know about becoming a 1st team all star but 2nd or 3rd team yearly is possible for sure. She needs to block out better, she tends to wait until the ball comes off the rim to block out, and be more aggressive getting after the ball. Her offense so far has looked good and she could look for her shot a bit more, only 2 games totaling 12 pts but she's shooting well over 50%. Her defense is stronger than I thought it would be coming out of college. It looks like she's going to adapt well to the more physical WNBA style, that seems to be a UConn specialty in development. Kind of a side note but I hope Brynna Maxwell gets well and someone picks her up. I'm a Spokanite and Zag homer but I think a team like Chicago could really use her for the inside out game. She moves well without the ball and is a money 44+% three point spot up shooter. She's long enough at 6' and defensively solid, not a shut down defender but can move her feet and get in passing lanes. Haven't heard how bad her knee is but if it is fixable and healable she might be worth an invite next year from a team with a strong inside game to fill a wing.

It’s kinda too early to really comment honestly on rookies or the season thus far even though some trends are developing. Ultimately I think CC will be fine even though she is getting everybody’s best shot. She is currently struggling but she will come through it and be the player we know she is. Most of the other rookies looked alright especially Camron Brink but it was only one game. I saw both Lynx games. Alana Smith who is an experienced player has been the signing of the season thus far. She has been revelation to me. I agree with you I have my doubts abt Pili being a productive WNBA player. Nneka Ogwumike seemed to have sprained her ankle near the end of the game vs the Lynx. Was she able to play in yday’s game vs Mystics. Btw Aaliyah Edwards has looked alright in a struggling Mystics team.

1) Are you saying that the head coach is not allowed to critique Caitlin Clark game? Was the Coach wrong to say CC had some open looks from the midrange distance? So you think Coach should not be helping CC develop a mid-range shot? However, I do agree, that Caitlin will be absolutely fine.. She has demonstrated how good she can be with 3 point shooting, passing and getting to that rim. I think Indiana Fever are a better team than people are given them credit. Once the chemistry between CC, Aliyah Boston and under-rated N Smith gels, they be good to go. 2) Maybe its better you stop talking about Angel Reese...your a bit to dismissive. Critiquing Angel Reese game is one thing...but when start talking about Alana Smith would have been nice combination with Cardoso..straight after talking about Angel Reese, seams like you are taking a dig. I think Angel Reese is the better candidate for rookie of the year. There’s nothing wrong with what Clark coach said. Because the coach is right. I never thought that the coach of Iowa would coach fever. It seem like Clark and her former coach don’t even get along. Angel Reese and Cardoza both won championships. They should be the spotlight not C. Clark. When you put people in a spotlight, of course you bring attention to them and the team that’s what’s going on with clark all of the spotlight. Angel Reese may not be pushed by the WNBA or the media and yet she still have the spotlight on her 😂. When you put that defense on Clark, her game is diminished. Ask Raven Johnson of South Carolina. Ask DiJonai Carrington.

Caitlin Clark is and has been the main draw, since college. Whether you like it or not. And stop acting like she is a manufactured star. She can ball with the best of them. None of the other rookies is filling arenas like Caitlin. Not even close. Leave your hatred at the door.

Clark is under greater defensive pressure in her debut than any other player, it's as if there's a price on her head and the WNBA made sure to put the best defensive teams in the league at the front of the line. Clark joins 4 other WNBA player with 50 points, 15 assists in her first three games. May 18th 2024 Clark drops 22 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 steal in the same game reigning MVP Breana Stewart put up 24 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, i'd say Caitlin will be fine.

I love it when commentors speak to other commentors. I read the comments - it is so passive aggressive. Just talk to me and say I am wrong. I just find it funny
