An Early Start at Spring Fieldwork!

The start of some fieldwork! Some chisel plowing, disking, and fixing some old clay tile on a few farms. Also, we got a sprayer bought! So will finally be able to learn the ropes and do our own spraying! I've traded off a few farms for other farmland about 90 miles NW from where I originally started farming, and that means everything in the machine shed I built in 2021 needs to get moved by the time closing rolls around. We're starting to move the planter and mulch finisher out of the buildings. It will be a weird year with not having much building space, but luckily a neighbor has a shed available to use that will work well. Planting should be starting soon! Thanks for watching!

OMG right there with you on the knees. Now I am 59 years old. Football, Bull Rider, Military jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. One surgery while in the Army and now have had four more. Three on left and two on the right knee. I hate Dr's but we need to swallow our pride and go to them.

Great new video. I had my ACL done 2 years ago after tearing chasing one of my pigs ! Took 3 months off work and got physical therapy during that time. I'm 52 and had not a days problem since the surgery. Then again , my surgeon was the 49er's Orthopedic surgeon. Best of luck to Spencer.

One thing that helps a lot with those older tractors when hooking and unhooking hydraulic hoses is to shut the tractor off and then move the lever back and forth to take all of the pressure out of the lines. It is also a lot easier to hook the hoses up to the tractor with the Tractor off.

Grant I run a Ravin 450 rate controller with a John Deere autosteer screen. All I did was add a cable from the Ravin to my John Deere screen and it paints the screen with each section that’s turned on. I do have to manually shut off sections when I’m about to overlap. Auto shut off with the John Deere section control would be great but I’d recommend adding more than three sections if you do have section control added. 3 section on 90ft is still going to overlap way to much.

Just a tip On the 4020 with unhooking the hydraulics. Shut the tractor off and move the hydraulics back-and-forth that should release all the pressure.

As always, great video! I’m a 26 years old farmer and agronomist from Quebec and i’m proud to see that our generation can farm the successful way! I follow your channel since the beginning and i hope that you will reach the same success of other farming channels that you propably know. As i think about it, why you didn’t plowed corn stubble for the hay seed bed preparation? The result would have been better. I think that you should make a moalboard a plow video with Spencer’s 4020! Followers will appreciate! Also, you should go to the Half Century of Progress Show! It would a be great experience and opportunity to reach new followers. Have a great season! Jordan

Just for future references and I may be kind of late saying this but instead of having to beat the end of the hydraulic hose on the tractor to release the pressure just shut the tractor off and move the hydraulic lever back in forth. Much easier and cleaner way to release the pressure. Love the channel and videos!

A little trick I learned about a 4020 is when you go to start it you want to lower the 3 point lever all the way down so it doesn’t try and raise it while the tractor is turning over.Love your videos keep it up.

Ive just discovered this channel! Enjoying your progress from farm sim player (which is an awesome game) to having a crack in the real world. As an Australian I have no experience in “corn n beans” farming so it’s interesting to see what you are doing. I do listen to “No Till Farmer” podcast as well as “Cover Crop Strategies” and would recommend them to you if you’re starting out. The most recent tip I heard was from an Indiana farmer who plants all his beans first using a drill (apparently they can tolerate colder conditions and will yield better with a longer time in the ground) and then only plants his corn when the soil is warm enough because it doesn’t tolerant the cold as well. The other interesting thing he did was plant his cover crop while he was harvesting by using airseeders mounted on his combine heads!!! The seed went out in front of his chopping corn head and went out behind is bean head which was never wider than the distance the stalk chopper at the rear of the combine could spread.

When you switch those hydraulic lines shut the tractor off set the implement down with the tractor off then move the remote lever back and forth with the tractor off. That will take all the pressure off the lines and you won’t have to get hydraulic fluid everywhere or damage the fitting.

Put a grove conversion on that 4020. The original pioneer conversions that have been around for years were junk right out of the box. Grove makes a nice kit to invert those old remotes to a push pull with the pioneer tip. Little pricey but makes life easier

This suggestion is a bit late now but if you are plant alfalfa on corn stocks you'll get a better stand if you have less debris to plant into. Guys around here will run a flail mower to chop up the stocks then round bale them before doing tillage to get a nice clean bed to seed. Realize you have neither implement but probably have a neighbor that may and the corn stalk bales make good livestock bedding or can be ground into a feed ration so someone probably would buy them or take in trade for doing a custom bale job.

A JD rate controller isn't too expensive, but I'm not sure how much the section control unlock would be on your 4640 display. Depending on what level of correction you have on your starfire globe you could map your fields and the shutoffs could all be automatic. I believe with a JD rate controller you could add more valves for more sections instead of just three on a 90' boom. If you stick with the Raven, you can get a $100 cable from Ag Express to map your coverage on the 4640. There's value in that as well for both NH3 and spraying. If you plan to keep your 606C for a long time, spend the money and do the Calmer rebuild kit and also get all new slip clutches. Should last you a long time.

Helpfully tip stop beating the crap out of the hydrulic lines to release the pressure. Put the lines in float let it do what it needs pop it back into neutral the lines will lose pressure or if you don't have float shut the engine off push the lever back and forth to release the pressure unhook them then start up.

@granthilbert5632 I'm not sure if there is or not, Case guy. But if there's not just shut the tractor off push down and lift up the hydrulics the pressure will release from the hydrulic lines. When u smack them on things it damages the ends and when you put it in your tractor ur damaging the valves.
