Darrell Ang, an award winning conductor of symphony orchestras and a Grammy award nominee, shares with us a little bit about how Catholic liturgical music played a part in his formative years. He also plays for us this Easter, something from Bach...
"I chose this particular chorale of J.S. Bach because it is typically an 'Easter' chorale. Bach wrote hundreds of chorales, and all of them serve to mark different days in the Christian calendar. Although he was lutheran, his chorales were written in four-part manner influenced by Renaissance motets of largely Catholic composers. 'Christ ist erstanden' belongs to several chorales of Bach that specifically serve Easter Sunday celebrations, and the text itself of this chorale began life long before Bach as a very old German Catholic liturgical song. Bach was an immensely God-fearing composer: not one note of his was not written to serve and glorify Him. He dedicated everything he wrote to God's glory."
