Far too volatile special type of Li Ion that is difficult to source. NO Other mass produced BEV uses this type of battery. The fumes are hydrogen which burns and everyone should've been evacuated before the containment was breached by pressure. However lithium reacts with water which makes matters worse but spraying it with water in hopes enough thermal energy is absorbed will be what the firemen will do. Keep in mind that by volume, batteries have about 1/100 the energy of gasoline or diesel and there are both gasoline and diesel fires that leave the entire vehicle a blackened hulk. This is still small time compared to gasoline and diesel vehicle fires.

12/24v system is separate from the drive battery. It's like this in all EVs. The interior lights in a Tesla aren't 400 volts, they run off a conventional 12v battery.

Since first commenting I've been in touch with former colleagues who are still in the service who say that there is extensive concern in the service regarding EV batteries and their propensity to spontaneously explode/burst into flames. Apparently, even if an EV battery fire is extinguished there is still a very real risk of it continuing to overheat and spontaneously reignite for quite some time (up to a matter of several hours) so it would seem sensible to let the fire expend as much of the fuel as possible to reduce that risk of reignition.. Of course, as with any hazardous chemical incident, consideration would have to be given to the possible toxicity of the firefighting runoff and preventing it from entering any drains or watercourses, obviously Fire Services/Departments will have determined this by now but as I personally don't know how toxic the runoff would be I'd certainly be looking to contain it until I'd got some expert advice..

Your bet is pretty damn crap, because the weight of the CO2 output from all of those cars would far outweigh thenentire weight of this bus. EVs are actually far less likely to catch on fire than ICE cars. If you're afraid of car fires, I recommend staying furthest away from older gasoline cars.

These are emissions that matter too - toxic clouds. CO2 is just plant food, and the world's flora needs all it can get - the world's CO2 has been dropping for 75 million years, and plants are currently gasping for breath.

Fortunately battery technology is advancing to glass/ceramic batteries, so this will happen less and less in the future.

Does it even matter? There are more than 150 gasoline vehicle fires a day alone in the US (212,500 vehicle fires in 2018). So I guess in total it is a couple of thousand every day worldwide. Government data shows that gasoline vehicles are up to 100x more prone to fires than EVs. And we have to start somewhere with new technology. It is evolving and getting better and more secure step by step.

@@dutchmansmine9053 Well, some months ago there was a cargo ship full with hundreds of luxury electric cars that caught fire near the coast of the Azores islands. TLDR - it all went glu-glu under water. That was an ecological record being set!

I still think that burning bus probably has less ecological impact than your average tanker spill, or drilling platform accident.

Contrary to popular belief petrol vehicles can also explode when they are on fire, and this also is a danger to occupants. It's sort of why people don't sit inside vehicles that are on fire.

@@krashd Yes they can - but the flames cannot immediately enter the passenger compartment (at least on US vehicles) and the passengers have time to escape. With this bus - nobody would have gotten out without serious injuries from the rain of burning metal. The time between the start of the fire an 'nonsurvivable' was simply too short.

I looked at this video several times. I never found a moment to escape. The best (and even bad) moment is at the beginning of the fire, running through a rain of molten metal.

Everybody had already escaped before the video started to be recorded. This is only the end fire.

you can open the window on the back of the bus with a specialized tool and escape from there, too

Climate always been changing even before humans existed but it's profitable to forget that. The energy and cost put in creating electric vehicles, it's lifespan and battery pollution during making and after makes them not worth it.

@@rengurenge It is, since EVs have lower emissions during operation which varies with the source of electricity. If it gets its power from a coal power plant, then yeah, it's not that clean. But if it's even oil or gas, then EVs produce less emissions.

@@thespaceseal I think ICE can be as CO2 neutral as possible for instance efuels using solar and wind power, CO2 and other emissions can be extracted from the air and using hydrogen. There is a plant down in Chile producing that fuel. Porsche, Mclaren, possibly Lamborghini, and several others are looking into this fuel. Yes it will still emit carbon dioxide and others but it is said that they will be canceled out by capturing them using rotating fans from the factory. Hope they’ll spread it to most of the world as possible.

@@RM10345 I know a guy who got stranded, the tow company wouldn't take his electric car. Imagine what it would be like if people put miles on these things like petrol cars, and electric cars nearly all had 100,000 miles on them, were hard run, and had the odd service skipped. Thing is, it will only take 1 fire in a tow companies yard and they wont be able to afford insurance for electric cars again.

Imagine a phone using li-ion battery that charges right next to you all night long...Oh wait!

Only problem is a Tesla has to have 7,104 of those batteries and if one pops off it’s only a matter off seconds before it causes a chain reaction with all the rest. @@oddities-whatnot It's better for the environment and makes better vehicles. There are objective benefits to battery electric vehicles, but there are also downsides. Lithium polymer batteries just aren't super safe when you have a lot of them in a small space, lucky there's lots of big money being thrown at designing safer batteries. No one was gullible, we just aren't there yet.

they are not safe and the pollution is just somewhere else instead of from the exaust from your car i am all for cleaner ways but it hase to be really cleaner not just make the pollution somewhere else and when they burn they pollute so much i dont think its cleaner the driving on gas and a lot places use coal power plant to produce energy so the power going in to the car is not clean at all hydrogen would be good only we are not allawed to use borilium to store the hydrogen because they use it in nuke rockets for propulsion

It's more that petrol fires aren't as big a news. Happens pretty regularly. As does people trying to put it out with water. Even ferrari and lambourgini have recalled vehicles because they were bursting into flames.

@@th3d3wd3r That's true, but to me it' not necessarily about actual numbers of vehicles, it's the likelihood of survival and remaining uninjured from individual incidents while exiting the vehicle that are the more concerning issue here. Fires in ICE cars, vans etc.. usually develop much slower than the one on this EV bus, this allows any occupants those vital few extra seconds to safely exit the vehicle, pretty much instantaneously after ignition this bus was ejecting what appear to be substantial burning chemical 'sparks' which would certainly injure exiting passengers. I'd agree about there being issues with certain vehicles, for instance, in the late 80s there was a serious issue with the MK3 Ford Escort in UK/EU, the wiring behind the glove box would belch smoke and ignite after a few minutes, though it has to be said that although I attended several of these fires just on my own station ground we never once had a casualty and can only recall one from all ICE vehicle fires (where the occupants were not trapped as a result of collision..)

@@Newoak True, but it is important to know what happens when a gasoline powered car catches fire as well. Probably more explosive energy stored in a gasoline tank than a battery pack (judging by the range capability of respective vehicles).

The solution is to enclose the batteries in a fire resistant enclosure with a fire supression system should it catch fire.
