Queen's Escape, Château de La Tuilerie

4 ай бұрын

After almost a decade, I (Karen) am giving up my apartment in Düsseldorf. My expectations were that I’d still be in at my place some of the time, but I’ve spent most of the last year at the château in Martel, France. So, it’s time to let it go. In this video I travel to Germany to empty my apartment and visit some favorite places before closing the book on this very happy chapter in my life. I’m thrilled with our new château adventure, but looking back will always be a little bittersweet. Love you, Düsseldorf.
xxoo Karen

Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

Karen & Bo, this video was such a pleasant surprise and fabulous to watch. I’m in South Australia - I’ve been to the UK three times and once spent ten days in the US (California). I had never been to Europe though but back in 2020, a friend and I were booked on a 15 night river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest during May. Sadly, we knew early that year that Covid was going to be a huge, worldwide pandemic and we wouldn’t get to do our cruise. It was so sad but fortunately, we were reimbursed for all that we had paid when booking the trip. I had been so looking forward to visiting the beautiful places along the rivers so your video was lovely to watch. I can tell you both love Dusseldorf and can see why. Thank you for taking the time to record the footage and share it with us. Love from ‘Down Under’. ❤️

Hi Karen, Jenny here from Melbourne, Australia. Have been following you from day 1. This was a beautiful & sentimental vlog of your previous home. Loved the walking tour and insight into your neighbourhood & life. Your chateau is beautiful but I would find it hard to leave the buzz of this city. You have integrated your lives and families so beautifully. I guess you are not that far from anywhere in Europe which makes me quite envious. Have been to Europe several times and might visit you next time in France. Please show us Florida as I have never been there & would like a peak. You are a lovely couple & I look forward to your new journey together in France. Jenny

Karen, thank you for sharing this wonderful vlog with us. It was pure joy going with you to Duesseldorf and exploring a look back on your life there. It was just delightful and sent my mind back to a very special time in my own life... In the late 60's, during the Vietnam War, my fiance was drafted and fortunately was sent to Erlangen Germany, (instead of Vietnam) where he spent his entire tour of duty. After his first year, he came back to the States on a leave, at which time we married, and I returned to Erlangen with him as a brand new bride. We lived off base in a brand new highrise apartment building on the 12th floor with a fantastic view of this university town. There was nothing about the experience I don’t cherish to this day. I loved the culture, the shopping, the fast autobons, the old buildings, the food, the people, October fest, then Christmas Market in Nuremberg... site seeing ancient churches, museums, and castles. I loved it all! The entire experience remains a most treasured memory for the last 56 years! May God spare me dementia so I can continue to recall it with great joy! 🙏❤🥰

Watching your goodbye video makes me homesick for Germany. (I‘m not from Düsseldorf but a German ex-pat in Ireland.) It‘s like a love letter to the city. The beautiful memories will remain - and hopefully you will have opportunities to visit again.

Maybe too much of a hassle, either doing all the arrangements yourself, which would be a lot of work, or putting it in the hands of agents. Also some holiday makers do make a mess of places they go to. And it might not be available for when you want to use it, unless you keep a couple of weeks free each year. I imagine the insurance would be high too.

It’s an ongoing battle in Dusseldorf. Owners repaint often and the police do their best. But with a semi-large city, it’s a battle. I will say that there’s a lot more of it these days as well as a bit more riff raffl. Germany has an open door policy to immigration so there is probably an effect there and also an open mind to creativity. In many places the graffiti is better and downright beautiful. 😊

Bo is fluent in German. He works out of Cologne. I know enough to speak to vendors and people on the street and to understand things in context. My French is coming along much faster than my German did. I sat at a dinner party the other night with 2 French couples and could understand 75%. I will keep studying and practicing.

Would you sooner the pandemic killed more people than it did? Governments did not benefit from it, most countries around the world suffered financially, so it would have been more profitable for them not to put controls in place. They did it for our health and safety. Wonder how you would have fared with the restrictions and rationing in place in the UK during WW2?
