I’m hitting 50 soon, been riding a push bike since I was 8 or so. I’ve seen a lot of things I would have missed otherwise. I got a motorbike about r years ago and love it as well, but there’s a certain peace when pedaling. New to your channel, got directed here by Bjorn Bullhansen mentioning you. Subbed and loving your feel-good content, as Bjorn calls it. Cheers from Tennessee, USA.

Hi Sandy, I worked in a bike shop 35 years, retired 2 yrs ago we sold that model Diamnodback. I was intrigued when you reviewed on Strava, you worked in Kilometers! I thought you were still in miles. I understand not wearing a helmet, but please do, you're a role model for one, I've seen heaps of people hit the deck and bounce up, and say if they hadn't been wearing a helmet they would be still on the ground or worse. I enjoy all your countryside, I'm in NZ. Cheers.

Hi Andrew, When I downloaded Strava it came setup in Kms, so just left it that way. The Old Diamond back is a good bike and I still think it's good enough all these years later, I wonder what your thoughts are on the bike?
@andrewlawry6980
@andrewlawry6980 2 жыл бұрын
@@WiltshireMan Hi, A fairly basic bike, you obviously look after it. Is it 7 or 8 speed, all this upgrade to 10 speed, then 2 or even only 1 on the front is marketing BS in my opinion especially for the average rider like You and I. There is a move away from the 26 inch wheels and that was to what they called 29, a much bigger wheel, in many situations a faster ride with few downsides, then the move to a midsize wheel 27.5 or 650B which is actually closer to the original 26, which may suit a shorter rider but otherwise again marketing magic. Sadly the world revolves around commerce and upgrades. Your bike is as good as it ever was. The chain and cassette do wear out, and the gear cable outers wear which gives innacurate shifting. Otherwise it should be trouble free.
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlawry6980 Thanks Andrew, yes a lot of marketing BS unfortunately happens and the older I get the more I can see it. The bike has a 7 speed cassette and 3 chain rings and a lot of gear options, I am always able to find a comfortable gear to spin for whatever condition apart from really steep climbs.

Hi Sandy, I'm 59yrs, two brain tumours, & to keep fitness up Iv Garaged my VN800 & Just Ridden my old Mountain bike 51miles with a two day wild camp included towing 90lb of gear; all good except the hill climbs. Great to cover the ground under self sufficiency, & then the best bit, a very very enjoyable relaxing camping setup. Awesome videos Sandy, Thank you.

I've got to admit I am really enjoying the cycling maybe even more than the motorcycling and the ease at which you can find a campsite is just great too. The benefits of exercise and not to be understated

@@WiltshireMan I Totally agree Sandy, a modern cycle these days can reach some extraordinary places down old tracks etc, as like you Iv part up graded my 90s Mountain Bike & changed to disc brake & rear pannier setup with a tow ball so to pull a small trailer with 90lbs you can hardly feel its there; Out doors, fresh air with exercise is probably the elixir of healthy living: Excellent Vids Sandy Thank you.

The bicycle is my only means of travel now. I've gotten rid of my vehicle, kitted out my hybrid with front and rear Panniers. Even have a MTB built solely for winter riding. It's remarkable what you can see at a slower pace. Unknown eateries, shops, landmarks and the daily lives of the locals. I've been in this small town in Japan for 12 years now and have discovered so much more of it simply by commuting by bicycle. Great exercise, but also great as stress relief, a time to think and to work on your focus/situational awareness. Rain, snow, wind and shine, I'm out wheeling about. No second thoughts, it's become a way of life and I feel so much better for it. Thank you for the efforts of battling those hills multiple times for camera shots as you carried us along with you.

Thanks Marco, Your comment resonates with me very strongly, You really do experience so much more at a slower pace, I think we all tend to live at too fast a pace and miss so much. Now you only have bikes just imaging how much money you will save too.

That was a fabulous ride WM, thanks for taking us along - 25 years old, so a Dutch-built DiamondBack rather than the pre-1992 Raleigh versions? Not that it matters, it's a great bike none-the-less. Just one observation; you're too low to reap the benefit of the final part of the pedal stroke - a few more mils should give you more ooomph! And for the "helmet commentators", studies show that drivers perceive cyclists as "safer" when sporting a bit of plastic covered foam and so tend to drive CLOSER, giving non-foam heads MORE SPACE - and plastic covered foam won't save anyone from spinal injury, or having your torso run-over: smthg to consider. Thanks Sandy, A.T.B

Thanks for taking us on the ride around your local area,always interesting to see other parts of the world and being on a push bike is a great way to see it. Its nice to hear a bit of the local history to. I think the way this mad world is going there will be more people getting back on bikes and riding to get around, the price of petrol being a major reason to do so. The best thing about cycling is, as you said the chance to see things you don't in a motor vehicle and the ability to stop just about anywhere to admire the views. I know you are probably going to get sick of hearing this but please wear a helmet, we don't ride our motorcycles without them and a push bike is just as dangerous to ride. Anyway as it was about 4:55 am when I started watching this video here in the Barossa Valley which is in South Australia i should probably think about getting up and making a cup of tea. I am looking forward to when you go on your cycling adventure that should be very interesting, anyway all the best to you and Mandy and of course your pair of good girls. Cheers from Australia

That was a nice long cycle around, you must be well fit to just get on a bike and do that kind of mileage. I know how much exercise you need to do to stay that fit being a keen cyclist myself, well done sandy!

Nice ride Sandy . I converted my old bike to electric and hills are a lot easier , i turn 70 this year and i ride a lot more distance than i normally would so it's a big help for me . Yes you do worry about range but you can manage it . Oh yeah , if your gunna ride a bike wear a HELMET or any bingle could lead to a permanent brain injury or worse :-)

Haa you could be right! But I'm going to try and use human power all the way:). Thinking about getting a bike satnav. I think I can download the gpx file OK but will let you know if I need it. Going to make some changes to the bike over the next few days, swapping out the handle bars and getting some flat grips, new brakes and a new saddle. It's cheaper than buying a new bike and will transform the bike:)

Good luck if you are riding it this year.

Good video and well done Sandy. What does surprise me, you don't wear a cycle crash helmet. One head impact on the pavement could change your life forever. Hopefully not!! It is mandatory in New Zealand to wear one.🤔

Great to see you out on the bike Sandy. Certainly a challenging ride, some good climbs master there. I have done lots around the Ridgeway so know how stiff some of those Hill are. Amazing that you did not look like any of them were a challenging you. Have you been secretly training on the bike or was it the Cornish pastie that help on the hills. You are braver than I using the A420 even for a short distance. There are some great off road tracks around here, that’s for sure. Glad to see you enjoying them. Cheers.

Thanks Charles, I've always had some cycling fitness and always out walking my two dogs too. Cycling goes back to when I was young, I've always had a bike. My longest journey was Lejog in 1993. When I feel I need a good workout I get on the bike and within two or three rides I'm used to the saddle again:)
