Rudy's Music & Eastman Guitars present "An Evening of Jazz with John Pisano and Anthony Wilson."
Though he's best known as a sideman to the greats, John Pisano came and showed a dazzled crowd that he can do more than accompany a great song; he can transform it with his marvelously fluid leads and punctuated chords. For this performance he played alongside Anthony Wilson, who also played beautifully.
The night was billed as a duet, but it should be considered a quartet instead. The Eastman guitars that accompanied the two men stood out as marvelous examples of how fine lutherie can transform the musician just as much as a guitarist can transform his instrument.
The Rudy's Music Stop family is truly grateful for having two wonderful musicians and such a wonderful guitar company
in our SoHo Store.
This is the second video of this series, so please subscribe if you want to see more great performances from this night.

That is one of my favorite places in the whole world to play a guitar -- either in the acoustic room, or atop in the Jazz room, the best is Rudy's in SOHO. Whether talking shop with Gordon, or Rudy, I always feel like a welcomed guest and valued customer. That, and Rudy's is my favorite store in the whole world, period. If you're in NYC, do not miss it!

Again I wish John would put out a book of his chord structures. He's got some of the neatest chord positions. He told me he had no intention of putting out a book like that. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only person buying one. Great stuff.

There's a ton out there! If you want to go the whole hog go for the George Van Eps books or if you research most of it is maths applied to songs with various ideas like drop 2 or 3 voicings, triad subs, chromaticism, etc. I've learnt the best of my stuff off a top-flight piano player. He got bored with my voicings and got me applying shell voicings and triad subs when I was comping with him, bass, drums and sax. A dream come true. :)

+aj pegg I don't know about John etheridge but generally guitar duets are a calamity....a fight for "maximus" r.p.m.....and the same "copié-collé" (scotched copies).The difference is when both are musicians....and John and Anthony are wonderfully .
@ajpegg2932
@ajpegg2932 8 жыл бұрын
+Jean-Luc Bersou . For your information, John Etheridge is a brilliant UK based guitarist who toured with Stephane Grappelli for many years playing 'gypsy jazz' and also toured with Soft Machine having replaced Allan Holdsworth. John Etheridge currently tours with the great classical guitarist John Williams, the violinist Nigel Kennedy, the Zappatistas, Soft Machine Legacy and others. He has played with Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis (gtr), Mundell Lowe (gtr), Birelli Laurene (gtr), Barney Kessel (gtr) and countless others. He is a brilliant guitarist that can play in many styles and many contexts. Pat Metheny described him thus "One of the best guitarists in the world". John Etheridge made the comment concerning jazz guitarists accompanying jazz guitarists that I quoted in my message on a BBC Radio 3 Programme entitled Jazz Library when he was reviewing what he considered one of the best jazz guitar recordings - Joe Pass 'For Django' (1964) on which Joe he is accompanied by the same John Pisano as seen on this video. Of course the great Django Reinhardt, to whom the title refers, was always accompanied by guitarists! Finally, if you haven't heard it check out the recordings by 'Bass Desires' that feature John Scofield & Bill Frisell for a more contemporary examples of guitarists accompanying guitarists. Also see John Etheridge's website at www.johnetheridge.com I know what you mean about guitarists fighting for maximum r.p.m. but I think that this is an affliction that affects rock guitarists rather than jazz guitarists. I agree - these 2 are brilliant examples of sympathetic accompaniment.

Thanks for your very interesting and detailed answer .As you mention Grapelly...it gives me a spark for John Etheridge .Of course ! I think Martin Taylor and Alan Holdsworth were more "mediatised" .Thanks for your infos " je vais m'y jeter" .Aside rock and Pop Guitar players in the UK were probably more connected to the American Jazz and Songs (standards) and sooner than others players in European countries .A matter of common culture (ex:Rod Stewart ! and so many ).The British Pop of the 60's was so creative .I remember the Gibson Tester English guitarist for Seimatone -Dave Roberts - brilliant ,eclectic and far above what we could imagine .Today the average level is perhaps higher and anyone can learn all day long inexhaustible "lessons" ... Have a Nice 2016 ...

I think I know what you mean, that masterful players can make anything sound good - and I agree with you to an extent. But in this case, they're playing guitars of very high quality. In fact they're playing Eastman guitars whose models are named after Pisano. They have his signature on the fretboard. The guitar that Pisano is playing retails for over $4K. www.eastmanguitars.com/john_pisano

If you want to buy an Eastman--be sure to get one with nitro finish. Their urethane has been unbelievably brittle for me. Little bits come of the guitar with minimal pressure and, since it is urethane, you can't dissolve it with thinner and blend in new lacquer.
