In a career spanning almost half a century, Amos Oz has shone a light of rare compassion, wisdom and passion. A bestselling novelist, essayist and journalist, and a prominent advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Oz’s work has been published in more than forty languages, and he has been recognized with many international awards including the Israel Prize, the Goethe Prize and the Frankfurt Peace Prize. Oz returns to the JCCSF to discuss Judas - his first major work since A Tale of Love and Darkness - an exquisite love story, and an allegory for the state of Israel and for the biblical tale from which it draws its title.
Made possible through the generous support of the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund.

I read A Tale of Love and Darkness, and the only thing that I can say is that it kept me thinking for days. Amos Oz is a very respectful writer and thinker that has influenced deeply in my Israel-Palestine conflict understanding.

A convoluted story that over-dramatizes a subtle theological point and blissfully ignorant of a well-known historical rivalry between Pharisees and Sadducees. The rivalry about the calendar - how to determine the day of the New moon and the day of Passover. And how to count the day of Shavuot, the Pentecost. And Jesus as a high-ranking Kohen, the Priest, with all his disciples - his close relatives, brothers and cousins. Who sides with one party against another. A well-attested pilgrimage to Jerusalem the priestly families perform 2-3 times a year to work in the Temple. A serious and historically sound story as it must be. And here comes Amos Oz with his fictional, convoluted story - all to justify a dubious political agenda.
