The 2011 John H. Glenn lecture featured a moderated conversation with two of NASA's original Mercury astronauts: John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. Fifty years after the first human spaceflights, they shared stories about their selection as astronauts, the first human spaceflights, and their careers in and out of spaceflight. This lecture was presented in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Lockheed Martin IMAX(r) Theater on June 23, 2011.

Glenn is 89 here. It's absolutely amazing how sharp he was at that age, recalling technical aspects of the Mercury program from 50 years before.

The education thing is the part that gets me, I see kids in the western world hate school and I see kids in the east who go to school and then 5 hours a day in after school education. These two guys were part of the first seven hero's who have paved the way, but the only way I see NASA still ruling is by doing what they did to get these two guys into space..............import the knowledge
@wildevixen7753
@wildevixen7753 2 жыл бұрын
You talk about education , but you think the plural of hero is hero's. What irony, Assuming that you actually went to school, when were you taught to insert an apostrophe in any plural? Never, and yet here you are doing it, as many semi-literate people do. Before you promote the idea of importing knowledge, you need to think about doing it yourself,starting with knowledge of grammar.
@scottwheeler2494
@scottwheeler2494 2 жыл бұрын
@@wildevixen7753 what you need is knowledge in the area of computer science. It is most likely that his web browser inserted the apostrophe automatically. It would resist your effort to remove it too. Often it's ignored as you are typing two words ahead by the time you notice. So don't be such a troll about grammar.
@wildevixen7753
@wildevixen7753 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottwheeler2494 You have missed my point entirely, which tends to confirm what I said about falling standards. Calling someone a troll just because they seek to improve those standards is an easy avoidance measure, but it does not conceal your fundamental problem. I imagine you call a lot of people trolls. As for your opening comment, if you think computer science is the cause of semi-literacy, your problem is even greater.
@scottwheeler2494
@scottwheeler2494 2 жыл бұрын
@@wildevixen7753I didn't fail to understand: I just rejected your point. Lecturing someone on something that could also be attributed to something else, assuming their ignorance, in a somewhat snide manner is classic troll behavior. Now, if I am wrong in your intentions, I am sorry I misunderstood. I obviously missed your point. But perhaps it could have been said in a different manner so that I could have grasped your message. Instead it was overwhelmed by the tone. That is all. Now, I agree with the statement that standards have fell in the last few decades. I doubt seriously that diagramming sentences is done in English classes now - they are too busy shoving woke content in their brains. The basics are missing in the curriculum. So that when a browser inserts an apostrophe creating a contraction, the user glides over the error knowing the reader will likely ignore the error. It's a pedantic issue at best given the conversational nature of a KZfaq comment. I was educated in a very different manner 60 years ago. I have forgotten most of what I once knew by heart. Sadly that is what time does to all of us. So don't assume my ignorance thinking that it proves your point. Your bias is showing as the kids say nowadays.

These men absolutely amaze me still as to what they went through and all they achieved! The really AWFUL things "they" did to these men and called testing was torture! They didn't even know what to test for let alone how to do it so they made them suffer for nothing. Not the right stuff ... the BEST STUFF and they did SO much even decades after the Mercury program. Alan Shepard went up first the month and year I was born. Gordon Cooper went up when I was 2 years old. I was born in the space age and just never really got it until much later in my life. When I was a teenager the Voyagers were sent into space and knew about them only later and to this day they ABSOLUTELY FASCINATE ME! They are still voyaging on.. or as far as we know. The youth of today just really don't get it. My kids are both pushing 40 and even they just don't get it. The new age I guess. I am PROUD to have been born into the space age and new tech age. I just don't like that now there is so much space junk out there. that bothers me. RIP JOHN AND SCOTT And all the Mercury ASTORNAUTS! best of the best of men.

Scott Carpenter, the coolest of cucumbers. When told that his heat shield may have become detached (Meaning he's about to burn up entering the atmosphere) he calmly stated "Oh my, I hope not".

It was actually Glenn who was told by Shepard just before blackout that the reason he was told to hold onto the Retropack was because there was a possibility the Heat Shield was loose. Carpenter, though, is the astronaut who thought he saw a flaming piece come off of the tower (top of the capsule) during re-entry. At that point, he said 'Ohhhh I hope not....."

I remember the Mercury missions, and poring over the newspaper clippings I’d pasted in my ‘Space’ album. So I’m delighted that my friend Lauren Oliver is making a movie about a fictional Mercury astronaut. And no digital nonsense - it will be shot on 35mm b/w FILM. “The story begins hours away from the last rocket launch of the Mercury era--1963. NASA discovers that Fletcher is hiding something: a critical health problem that violates every medical regulation known. The launch is held up while Fletcher stews in his capsule and the flight surgeon on the ground tries to make connections that will shut down the astronaut's dreams for good. Will the dreamer triumph against the dreamless?” While the characters are fictional, the setting is real and meticulously researched. They’ve even gotten help from someone who was actually there: Rene Carpenter, the widow of Project Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. I recently met two of the talented and charming actors, and I’m privileged to have read the script - it’s splendid. Please Google: Kickstarter T-minus.
