I feel the same about Benchmade. I have the Osborne 940 and I got it from them for $96 bucks and that was nice of them. I love hogue but the cost.

I cant stand the Benchmade Narrows. It's like they put titanium liners on it but forgot the scales, and for $500 no thanks. I rather get an Arno Bernard at that point.

I just bought a Deka, had the same issue with the base scales you had with the bug out. They felt so lightweight and flimsy, but for like ~$120, the magnacut/action/USA-made/everything makes it so worth it. Ended up swapping out the scales for some Flytanium ones because I’m extra, but even the base version with the scale issues is one of the best price/return ratios.

I also bought a Mysto as soon as they dropped. It does remind me of a combination of the bugout and the 940. I love the premium materials (titanium and magnacut). To me I like the size better than the bugout and to buy the S90V version and then aftermarket titanium scales you would still be north of 400$. As far as the 940 goes I prefer the titanium over the aluminum scales and I have never been in love with the warncliff blade shape. I much prefer the drop point/spearpoint style. I own an original 940 and have tried for years to love it because it is a very good knife but I just can’t. As far as the Narrows, I had one in hand at my local knife store and I hated the ergos! It is TOO thin to be comfortable in anything approaching hard use. The Mysto feels great in hand (like the 940) and the magnacut is quite slicey and tough! I am REALLY pleased with the Mysto! Also 1 week after purchase I tripped and fell on concrete and hit my right hip on the concrete and really jacked up the action (it would BARELY even open). So it was totally my fault and I sent it back to Hogue expecting to have to pay to get it fixed. As it turned out the fall had bent the red standoffs and Hogue fixed it for FREE! I thought that was pretty awesome! I have the Mysto back now and it’s perfect. Only paid to ship. Great customer service!

I literally sold my Mysto yesterday. Out of the box had blade play. I assume it could be adjusted out although I didn’t tighten screw. I didn’t like the way it sat in my hand. The spring was loud and gritty. I just decided it wasn’t for me I hope the new owner can enjoy it.

I 100% agree with you. I would love the design of the Narrows but I really want a version that is the price of the Mysto. I'd really like to know what makes the Narrows the price it is. I assume its just Benchmade thinking too highly of themselves but who knows.

One thousand percent agree about the weight/delicate/non-logical discussion in the beginning. I might have a heavier preference than the vast majority of people, but below 3,5-4 oz is normally not for me.

i have 3 benchmade knives. i like all 3 but still think that benchmade is going to eventually price themselves out based on the other usa competition. i see a design i like by them occasionally and when i see the price it confuses me. fortunately i got my 3 for marked down prices. in case whoever reads this is curious, the knives are the mini griprillian in s90v, osborne contego in cpm-m4 and the shootout in cru-wear

I don't get it either 😕 I just got a kershaw link in Magnacut for $125.00! Was really disappointed in the factory edge. Got a SOG tac xr d2 the same day and it was way sharper out of the box!

Mine was also grindy. Just let it go on eBay. Also blade side to side was horrible. Pro just tighten pivot but like 330 and it’s QA was bad.

Mr. Complex - How do those custom Original Goat Scales (Lexan?) compare weight-wise to the cartoonishly lightweight scales that come on the entry level Bugout and Deka? The see-through material is cool looking, but isn't it just as light as the other materials...which you hate?

Not sure why but the Omega Springs are flossing/grinding the inside of the titanium scales and pocket clip seems like a bad carry over from the deka but for 250 sale price I can't complain about the Mysto.

ABSOLUTELY! By FAR the BEST line Hogue currently puts out. I currently have 2 minis in 20cv, 1 full size magnacut and the jade scale automatic full size in magnacut. I love literally EVERYTHING about the knife.

I love Benchmade but agree with and have been saying the same thing about their pricing and what they offer these days. They need to innovate something to get ahead again and it isn't happening.

Why innovate when they can just re release current models in “anniversary” or “limited” models for 3x the price, with scales and blades that could be bought from American companies for a lot cheaper Benchmade is flouting on their name recognition, but like with names like Colt and Stanley You can’t just breeze by your whole future without innovating Stanley learned that, Colt didn’t Ig we will see if Benchmade ever will

I still think Hogue does the best sharpening from the factory, in terms of factory edges for production knives no one else comes close. I really like the direction Hogue is going the last few years, they’ve been making killer edc knives with excellent pricing considering the materials you’re getting. Once i got my Deka i sold my bug out and never looked back.

I've had multiple hogues and some came with some downright abysmal edges. For me spyderco is the goat for factory edges

@@larshoneytoast722 Spyderco is def up there for solid factory edges, no denying that. Although, I got a Manix a few months ago that had a super uneven bevel, but of all the Spydercos I’ve got that’s the only one with a sharpening issue. But i also own a shit ton more Spydies than Hogues, so it could just be a volume thing. The more you get the more chances you have of finding one with an issue. But now you’ve got me questioning this, maybe Spyderco actually is better…

@anthonym6078 same here, almost a dozen spyderco and the only ones that didn't have a perfect edge were factory seconds. I love hogue, they make great knives but the edges are pretty hit or miss in my experience

I'm a machinist, the tape man, the tape!! A human hair is .003 to .005 thick, imagine how thick both sides of that tape is. I know your using tape so you won't scratch knives up. Which is over kill in my opinion. So many variables when you with those things out lol I could go on and on.

I've measured both with and without the tape. I get the same measurement if I just apply more pressure with the tape. It squishes it enough that it gets negated

Titanium has a much lower thermal conductivity than aluminium. One more good reason to use it on knives handles : no more cold hand sensation !!!

One more thing going against Benchmades these days… counterfeits. There are tons of fake BMs out there, real PIA on the secondary market. Been really impressed with Hogue’s offering, it’s nice to have a centered crossbar lock out the box.

Even if the calipers aren't 100% accurate to a traceable standard of metrology, for the purposes of a comparative measure like you attempted here the information is still useful based on their accuracy to themselves. So thanks for showing that at least. Also, buy some Mitutoyo calipers and thank me later. Your viewers DESERVE that type of quality measurement content and they're an investment in a quality tool that's ancillary to your work as a reviewer that is still dwarfed by the price of knives. Those generic Nieko ones are garbage, I have a set for ballparking dimensions that dont matter at home for cutting wood. The Mitutoyo calipers are still way cheaper than a set of quality micrometers or dial test indicators too, so just look at those as a price anchor and the calipers feel like a bargain. Also, the Hogue by a MILE in comparison to the Narrows, for me. Even if they were the same exact price. Aesthetics, form, and function all go to the Mysto for my tastes.

I think Benchmade can get ~$500 for that knife. Between diehard fans of the brand and some wealthy REI shoppers... So they ask it. It's unfortunate for knife people, but they aren't making it for 'knife people' I guess.

I am so sick and tired of Benchmade’s pricing. I am a huge fan of their knives, but enough is enough fuck their pricing. They have made me go to other knives like Kizer ,Spyderco, Civivi And so on I’m a pretty good sharpener so I don’t need super steals yeah they’re cool and all but I’m more than happy with S30V and 14c

Hogue could have done micro-milling like two dozen other knives, but they wanted to be different. Micro-milling is legit so don't get me wrong. It looks much better in person. I snagged one when they first dropped and it's the best Ti crossbar lock knife in my collection. The price is competitive too. This Mysto can be compared to the Tactile Maverick, which is $350. The Mysto drop point variant is $330, undercutting it by 20 bucks. To find a US-made titanium folder for a bit over $300 is amazing because there are very few at this point. The handle milling may not be for everyone, but it's too good to get hung up on the circular milling on this knife. At least for me, that's exactly why I wanted it aside from the magnacut and Ti handles. To each his own, right?
