My stable growing up had both mares and geldings. My horse was at the bottom of the chain with the other geldings but always defended the mares when they all went to pasture. I always admired him for that.

My Great-Granddad owned 2 mares later on in his life ( all his other horses were geldings , except Stanley , an old stallion ) . Great-Granddad never had any problems with any horse . His mare Belle was given to him by a dear friend who had sold his farm and when she came to our farm GG determined she was in foal and almost due to give birth . Belle threw a darling little filly and GG called her Faery Belle . Both the mares were '' in love '' with GG and were never moody or grouchy . They both wanted to be as close as possible to GG . After Granddad passed away Faery Belle mourned him until the day she herself died . There were 7 other horses in the stable when GG died and they too mourned him for awhile but after a couple of months they quit looking for him ; Faery Belle never did .

I think you should have subtitled this video "Things you can say about a mare but not a woman". I'm kidding...mostly lol! Anyway, great explanation. I had noticed that all of your horses were geldings but didn't know there was such an extensive backstory to it so thanks for explaining it and hopefully things work out well with your new arrivals. I'm sure you will take great care of them like you do with all the others

Good information about geldings and mares together. I had no idea. I knew that a stallion can be a big problem especially if mares are around, but didn't know mares could be ornery. Very interesting!!

Great video, it finally answered many of the questions that I have asked before. I have wonderful memories of the first stable I took lessons at. The first horse was a older gelding named Copper Lad. Yes, he was bombproof as you say but after a while he also was not challenging in any way. As time went on and my knowledge grew, owners who didn't have the time their horses needed would ask me to ride and exercise their horse when they couldn't come. The stable was about a mile from my home and I would ride my bike there nearly every day. I'd muck out the stall, brush the horse well, check it's feet etc and record everything for both the owners and the stable for those horses. I loved that stable and a large amount of my childhood was spent there. Sadly due to illness the owners had to sell the stable and the new owners would not allow anyone who didn't own their own horse to be there. I had been riding and exercising a few horses for years and they tried to get the new owners to allow me to continue but they refused. The horse owners ended up moving their horses to a new stable and that stable ended up closing, for lack of customers, a few years later. I still have the ribbons I won at the stable shows and from the state fairs that a couple owners let me use their horse for. All wonderful memories!
