I definitely fall into the category of people that find liminal spaces to be - for the most part - comfy, peaceful and nostalgic. It may have something to do with the fact that sometimes used to want to retreat away from society and its expectations, pressures and stresses, and go back to a simple time of pure freedom. To me many liminal spaces feel like places "out of time", where time does not pass, you don't need to get older and more cynical, it's all simple and as you see it. When I felt like I had depression a few years ago, immersing myself in the liminal space "sub-culture" was a genuinely soothing and theraputic experience for me and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I found a book on Amazon inspired by the poolrooms. It wasn't bad. It's called The Forever Pools. Nice to see the liminal space stuff getting more recognition.

Calling them liminal is a misnomer, its not the liminality its the juxtaposition between liminality and the absence of purpose. A liminal space is a transitory space as google says. A mall is liminal even with the people, but its the absence of the people, the purpose of the space, that makes it uncomfortable. That's why old homes can also be the same, its liminality not in a physical sense but a temporal one. The thought that something as solid and intimate as a home is too, just another place you pass through on your journey. These places we pass through lay empty and rotting, having been left behind. I think the feeling you described is less nostalgia, and more so hiraeth

Liminal spaces aren't necessarily in transition between two places, but they can be transitions between two times, or uses. A house with nothing in it is liminal because it's in a period of transition between owners, or between construction and being full. A birthday party room with nobody around is similarly in transition between uses. Arguably even images that are mangles of familiar imagery are in transition... the elements are in a transition between useful forms... because a transition is just the change of one state to another. Liminal images of mangled hallways or endless pools involve this. It's like you've caught a pool half-way between two different pools. Okay, maybe this one is a bit of a stretch, but I think it's the same vibe for that reason. The essence of liminal spaces is in the sensation of discomfort or being out of place caused by focusing on something that's unfamiliar to you, typically something you don't perceive or focus on. A school hallway isn't a liminal space in a sense because they're places that things happen, not just a way between places that things happen. You hang out in the halls, talk to friends, get your books, etc... but they are liminal during classes, or after hours, when they're eerily empty and in a transition between periods of use. But you probably almost never really think about a hallway in your home. It's just a way from point A to B. Similarly hallways in hotels are like that. People don't tend to spend time in the halls. They also have this weird effect where you know you're surrounded by tons of people in a hotel's hallway, but you can't see any of them. Your empty school hallways are only "liminal" to you until they become familiar. The experience of liminal spaces is inherently subjective. If you're not familiar with space being full of people, seeing it empty doesn't mean anything to you. To you, that isn't a transition. Similarly, the reason many spaces feel liminal at night isn't because night is magic, but because people tend not to be familiar with many spaces at night. A forest is familiar, but most people don't spend time in a forest at night. If they are there, they're not focusing on it because they're trying to get somewhere quickly, or they're occupied and/or with people (camp fires for instance). Similarly, a house exterior at night is eerie, because you probably don't spend much time looking at random houses in the middle of the night. You've seen them, sure, but you probably don't really think about it, just hurrying to get in. I'd also argue a liminal space can have people in it, but it has to be in a way that is outside uses familiar to you. For example, if you don't have guests over often, when they do come over, that can end up being liminal. Similarly, I'd argue something like classroom full of students and whatnot is liminal... because it's not your class. As for nostalgia, I'd say it's not nostalgia, though you can experience it that way, but familiarity. The images have to show you something familiar in an unfamiliar context or they just don't work at all. The only liminal nostalgic sensation I can think I've ever had is that I spent some good times in my grandparent's basement as a kid, especially with my cousins, playing when we were both over visiting... and while it being only me also is somewhat familiar, turn off the lights and it's this weird combination of nostalgic comfort and unfamiliar unease. And I think the real issue is that people are talking about different things. An image empty of people isn't inherently liminal. It's liminal because it's a transition, but what constitutes a transition is subjective. If you like being alone, you're a lot more likely to interpret empty images as familiar rather than unfamiliar.

5:06 Finally. A liminal-esque photo that looks very familiar to my country. We have these covered courts everywhere. Some aren't as nice looking as this one. This one could look like it belongs to a school. I'm probably wrong and that this is nowhere near Southeast Asia, but it's nice to finally see something actually familiar to me from all these photos because most liminal space pictures are so American & stuff.

Man, gotta say it, this video is a breath of fresh air from all the overstimulation, fast-paced, brain-rot, we're all used to. Love the simple music and calm voice over. Love liminal spaces too. Nice

1:05 it actually is a transition becuase their is no furniture, they just moved in and are transitioning into a new home, another detail that makes this nostalgaic is the lower camera angle, the angle of a childs view.

That moment when the guy trying to give an exploration and explanation of transitional spaces, doesn't realize doors and stairs are, in fact, transitional spaces.

Excellent video. I would love to see any other liminal space content you want to create. I love all of your points, and I just wanted to point out something you didn’t really mention or might’ve mentioned, but didn’t focus on. That is the idea of liminal spaces being somewhere, you’re not supposed to be.Often times this is because the place appears closed. I realized this because I used to work the opening shift in a movie theater and movie theater liminal spaces generally don’t work on me because I don’t feel like I’m not supposed to be there. To me it just feels like I’m opening and there are hardly any employees in the building.

This deserves more attention. I know many might think liminal spaces/backrooms content is over saturated now, but I never seem to get sick of it.
