Mike Israetel: / rpdrmike renaissanceper....
In this episode, Iron Culture attempts to bring an intellectually honest conversation to the emotionally charged topic of steroids. Hosts Eric and Omar are joined by John Meadows (@mountaindog1) and Dr. Mike Israetel (@rpdrmike) John is a well known and respected bodybuilder, who has been open about his steroid use. Dr. Israetel attained his PhD in Sports Physiology and has a very knowledgeable understanding of PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs). The hosts will explore societal attitudes around steroids, discuss why someone decides to use and contrast lifting as a natural vs being enhanced. The goal with this episode is to give different perspectives on a controversial topic and highlight the large similarities that exist between both parties. I primarily follow dr. Israetels training advice, but I also watch most of mr Meadows videos on bodybuilding, and it would be really interesting to hear them discuss bodybuilding techniques in a format like this. My interpretation is that they differ quite a bit, dr Israetel recommends scheduled deloads, no partial reps or strange variations with very decreased weight in order to "feel the muscle", except for muscles such as the bicep and delts and so on. My interpretation would be that he recommends "conventional" training, full range of motion, not going to failure very often, and that bodybuilding specific techniques such as drop sets, failure and all of that are less beneficial than stopping the set approx. 2 reps from failure, and doing another set. From what I understand mr Meadows trains like this to some degree, but not with the same progression scheme, program structure, need-based deloads rather than scheduled ones, and incorporating these classic bodybuilding techniques.

Eric, you said that competing is unhealthy, and I've never competed before but I think certain aspects are healthy and people don't realize it. Calorie restriction for long periods can be unhealthy but I think it can also be healthy. The body will digest the "junk" in your body when starving (I think it's called autophagy?) Also, even the dehydration might be helpful occasionally. People who dry fast claim that their skin gets nicer. Perhaps the dehydration kills off the weaker cells in the body (only the strongest and healthiest cells survive and reproduce) giving you a higher quality of cells overall. Also, fungus needs moisture. Perhaps dehydration can kill fungus in the body? Anyways just a few theories I have. Thanks for the discussion.
@griffingeode
@griffingeode 5 жыл бұрын
I think pushing beyond your comfort zone can be healthy but anyone who approaches their limits puts stress on themselves that weakens their health systems. Feeling less bloated is good but getting dehydrated is not healthy.

Omar, we don't need to tell you that you should stop holding the mic in your hand. Fix it on something, and test things before you start recording This level of quality as for the topic and the guests is impressive, but you need to follow it up with top-quality production. Also, suggest that all guests have headsets or microphones. Even the cheapest kind is better than a laptop camera/mic Mike uses. But you are the greatest, I have no doubt you will iron it out as you go. :)

Hour and ten minutes in, this video is just great. Really interested to hear these guy's opinions, and damn I can follow what Mike's saying. In a lot of the Juggernaut videos his speech seems really rushed like he's about to hyperventilate. Actually enjoyed listening to his rants, and John creates a nice balance too. Always great to hear John's opinion on basically anything. Weird thing is that in clothes Omar looks considerably more jacked than Eric in this. I guess because his traps and neck are thicker, maybe? Surprised to hear Eric talk about taking pro-hormones too. Really enlightening video. Edit: 1:26:52 After hearing that attempt at... Some kind of European accent, I'm no longer convinced Mike has ever set foot in Europe. 1:27:50 Shout out Markus Ruhl.

I think Gregg should not have backed off a bit from his premise that people having trained for many years need to go to failure AND BEYOND. In Greggs video training he said that! and I agree. I'm 66 and must do this for results. Mike is defending his premise that you don't need to much or at the least very little. Gregg was trying to not have conflict. If Gregg was like he is in his video, he would have said, "in my opinion Mike that is bullshit. Advanced trainers will make little gains without failure and beyond." This is common sense! Gregg should not have been afraid of not backing common sense and personal experience with "scientific literature". This is what Mike needed to hear! People want to believe Mike's method CAUSE IT'S EASIER! Good job Gregg on your no nonsense videos!!

Great interview. I do disagree with John's comments about taking every chance to "come off". I'd say there's much more health risk in the ups/downs of being on and off, than going to TRT (True TRT, not super-cruise) after a blast. If you're going to commit to using gear, be ready to be on TRT. It's a mature decision, as they said. A few early cycles and you're done? Sure, come off. But if you're making it a lifestyle, you're going to be in for a huge roller coaster of health problems and emotional rollercoasters coming on/off all the time. Great podcast man. We need more of this.

So serious question for maybe next time. I was always under the impression that taking any sort of steroid whether it be winstrol, dbol, tren, clen, or testosterone would lower or shut down your natural testosterone levels permanently. They were stating from what I heard that you could take some sort of normal cycle of any of the above and once you stopped, you probably wouldn’t have any problems - even any related to testosterone.
@nicwilson89
@nicwilson89 5 жыл бұрын
You're only shut down so long as you're taking something. Why would your body need to produce it if you're providing it with many times that? The risk of permanent shutdown is reeeeeeal small, you have to fuck up really bad for that to happen...repeatedly.

Great video, as a natural lifter who has lifted for 4+ years i'm probably not the only one but I always play with the idea of jumping on a cycle to take my training further and compete in pro BB in the future. For people who just take gear to look good in the gym (gym rats) it seems kinda wasteful, you can obtain a great physique naturally but it takes so much longer than being enhanced. Although we all have the ability to make a choice, it's up to yourself what you want to do. Even though I haven't touched gear, I would advise someone to do thorough research and not start going that route until they are in their early to mid 20's.

Think Mike's perception of steroid use in Europe isn't representative for the majority of Europeans. He probably came to that conclusion because the Europeans he interacts with are more likely to be steroid users, due to the nature of his profession. If the EDM festival culture isn't a thing in the US, then where's Jeff Seid fingerblasting all these girls at? 😄 I'll skip the details - perception of steroid use in Europe is pretty much the same as in the US.

The guys that have come to love bodybuilding for its expression of physicality, and the esthetic of intense human effort, and the body beautiful- male and female, and the spiritual nature of the experience, and the character building as a product of hard work...................they are the wise ones.

Hey Omar, if a podcast is your new big venture, I think you might want to invest in a mic for Eric. Your own sound quality is good, but your cohost shouldn’t sound like someone calling to a radio station with a flip phone.

I really enjoyed this podcast! The four of you were informative and comical! It was really nice to see four men coming together with different views and be level headed, honest, and intelligent for an entire hour! Great job everyone!

Can you make a documentary on martial arts fighters using specialty anabolic steroids. I would like to know more about steroids that will not cause weight gain.

Good content, but personally hate "call in" style podcasts. The low quality audio from people talking through headphones and the built in laptop mic, makes it hard to listen to.

My use of supplements has decreased only for food and pre-workouts. Last time I bought creatine. I didn't know much of it, spent $40 then later realizing the stuff is $10. Video gave me some insight again on it. Ever start using again I'll probably just buy from optimum.

Do sent matter if you choose anabolic steroids whether you want to compete or not. Your choice. Period. A competition does not a bodybuilder make. 💪
