Do you agree with Ben on Trans issues? Someone on the left might say that your understanding of America as a social construct is much the same as how some people understand gender. They say gender is an idea based on a range of different characteristics a person may or may not have, and we use these characteristics to determine whether we believe a person to be from this particular socially constructed group or not. Can you see how this creates cognitive dissonance? If you can understand nationality as a social construct then it's not much of a leap to do the same with gender.
@grim_2000
@grim_2000 10 ай бұрын
@@Andyw1972--- pretty much all of the civilization is a construct. Important part is most of it is rooted in some sort of natural order or mutual benefits. We gonna come together & build roads, because it'll make easier to travel. We'll build castle walls in order to defend ourselves from the attackers. Etc, etc. All that bred many things that eventually formed the society (politics & other complex hierarchies, for example). Trans issue seems to be the opposite. It does feel unnatural on a very primal level & it doesn't seem to better anything.

Yep. Love that quote. We are too short of its consequences and meaning in our current modernity. Apparently man plays god has become the new real sexy thing. But there's a flaw in that plan. Whether you believe in a god or not, you'd have to be stunned silly to think that the actual reality of natural law that literally governs every breath we ever take in life, is replaceable, traceable, perfect or imperfecteable, or in any way capable of being synthesized or organized in or out of existence by mere mortals on this tiny planet. I'm a pretty creative guy, and as such, apparently lean far more on the side of the brain that promotes this (can't remember which lobe.) But still. I fought the good fight in life to learn how to love and respect reality. Which can be beautiful beyond belief, terrible, ugly, awful, brutal, merciless and a lot of other unpleasant things. But a disconnection from reality? Taught me a lesson I'll never forget. When you're sitting and rocking on a couch, and holding someone's hand, terrified, and you look at that hand and up the arm and so to the shoulder, and you feel that this is a lifeline stretching out to somewhere beyond Mars, and you're all alone at one end of it, and if it breaks, snaps, parts, disconnects... You learn to hug reality real hard after that. Because the alternative ain't pretty.

The Media in America is dominated by the Left, so even the Moderates ( or Classical Liberals ) are probably not speaking up and disagreeing strongly with the Radical Left for fear of losing their jobs / career destruction / being disinvited from status gatherings. What I've noticed for many years now is the Left's mocking of the Right for the latter's fears over, for example, "Gay marriage then what next?" There is some wisdom on the Right, especially Conservatives who bring a valid tension of pushing back when the Left goes too far. They remind the decent on the Left of The Law of Unintended Consequences, but if there are too many on the Left who won't speak up, then we get this mess of Marxism's long march through the institutions. Thus, extremism that doesn't care about long-term effects of children who want transitioning surgeries who later profoundly regret it. Jordan Peterson was right: The Left doesn't know where it goes too far. What's worse is that they don't seem to care. The Right excommunicates its Nazis and actual White Supremacists. The Left calls Antifa an "idea". The Left needs to get their sh*t together.

There are many ways to "be religious" or even to be "spiritual." But the common denominator is that people should treat others the way they want to be treated. Be willing to experience other viewpoints without feeling threatened by them. Don't force your views down other people's throats.

I think that is the main thing. There isn't a hidden agenda. Ben's conservative value system is clearly stated and out in the open. The left on the other hand, they love to use masking language and run a million laps around any uncomfortable answers they have to give. Ben proves that the opposite of an Orwellian dystopia isn't by default a totalitarian theocracy... yet that is what many want you to believe.

From the comments and posts of left leaning people you would think Ben Shapiro is the dumbest, most evil little guy on the planet. Then you hear him speak without interruption and realize he's actually pretty intelligent and well-read. He's also quite moderate and perfectly reasonable. But what's most important is he is always willing to have a civil conversation about pretty much any topic. Perhaps that's what irks those people. A conversation is the last thing they want.

Man, Ben's point about the US not having a binding history is something I've been saying for years. The minute you get "Chinese-Americans" or "Italian-Americans" or "African-Americans" ETC. you're driving a wedge between all those groups of people. The only way the American experiment can succeed out of its infancy (and really, it's an incredibly young country) is if they all become AMERICAN. That needs to be the one binding thing. And what's been happening the last decade or more is people saying that "AMERICAN" means nothing, that it is a smokescreen, that actually the most important thing is the place one of your ancestors from a hundred years ago came from and what they looked like.
@jennh2096
@jennh2096 Жыл бұрын
We are the great melting pot, except people are no longer melting together to create a cohesive society. Expecting someone to assimilate even just a little bit is now r@cist, and like you said, so many people hate on the American part but give all this honor to their "African" heritage, or wherever they came from, even though they have never been there, and would never survive there. I'd look incredibly stupid if I went around telling people I was Irish, which is a large part of my ancestry. I'm from Texas and every part of me screams Texas, not Irish. I don't even know when my family came over here because it was so damn long ago. I'm not Irish, I'm an American, and we need to go back to being able to say that we're proud to be one. This country is much younger than many others, which means it doesn't have near the amount of dark history that the other side of the world does
@edthewave
@edthewave Жыл бұрын
@@jennh2096 The problem with a "melting-pot" is that when everything melts together, you end up with a bunch of mud. And I say this as a Black American man whose family goes back to the 18th century in the United States. Don't get me wrong, the American Experiment was noble in spirit in some ways - a society built on the principles of "all men are created equal; endowed by their creator with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" and democratic governance with equal representation was a tremendous thing for it's day and shaped the history of the world. The trouble is these ideas didn't always pan out in practice. Inspite of penning those famous words, the majority of the Founding Fathers owned slaves - 41 of the 56, for example, and this was a contentious problem in their day which culminated in the American Civil War from 1861-1865. And it wasn't until 100 YEARS later that equal civil rights was codified into law with the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Manifest Destiny, for example, spread the American project from sea to shining sea, but numerous Native American groups were slaughtered and displaced in the process. Various groups will ALWAYS have in-group preference, be it based on racial, ethnic, familial/tribal, socio-economic status, religious orientation, etc. That's something we cannot eliminate from human nature. At best, part of the American experiment is balancing the rights of individuals vs groups. The dance between State and Federal, The individual vs the group, The Church vs the State, The native-born vs the foreigner, the rich vs the poor, the capitalist vs labor, etc. Without a common set of guiding civic and ethical principles that is COMPELLING,MEANINGFUL and TRANSCENDENT to the populace, people will default to their racial, ethnic and social identities. In most countries that are as diverse as America, conflict, sectarian violence and Balkanization ensues. I think of America more like a "tossed-salad" than a "melting-pot"; people maintain their various identities and groups (we haven't really homogenized as much as older cultures and have often deep divisions) and mix and mingle as necessary, and hopefully all of the different parts and ingredients make up a COHESIVE Unit. E pluribus unum - Latin for "Out of many, one" is our motto We aspire to have a nation where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Benjamin Franklin famously quipped to an inquiring woman after the US Constitution was first written, what the gathering had produced, "A republic, madam, if you can keep it."

Yes and no. As someone who is a dual national (meaning I hold citizenship of two countries who are on good terms with one another) my allegiance to both is not in conflict with either as both are democracies. I know which country I was born in, which country my ancestry solely descends from, and know my place within both. I also observe that despite the issues in both nations, that when push comes to shove there is a more cohesive sense of unity in my motherland because for the most part we are homogenous and have a shared history as a people which is why we have a reputation for unity when push comes to shove (and which is most evident to the world during FIFA season). As someone who lived in the USA for 12 years with an American son who is about to enlist who is proud of his heritage but even more proud of his country of birth (America) we both agree that without a unified cohesion under an American identity, the country continues to fracture. That unity does not have to be blind patriotism - a person who truly loves their country should be critical of what does not work and build upon that which does - but without that love and unity as a nation you get the present sh*t show. We are both moderates, politically independent with no party affiliation and also discuss how we think the next generation will tend to be more conservative after seeing the sh*t show of the last 8 years especially with fringe identity politics trying to force itself on the people en masse. My son loves how many great migrants who believed in the American dream helped shape America's best moments. And he wants to contribute to that through being in service to the nation. I wish him well when he leaves the nest, and he knows he has a home not only in the USA but wherever mom is.
@baz3575
@baz3575 Жыл бұрын
@@jennh2096 See, I am the first generation of my family not to be born in my Motherland and I hold citizenship of two nations which is why I claim both. If I did not have dual nationality, I would only claim one. My parents never lost their culture, they continue to speak Croatian and retain ties but they also successfully assimilated by learning the language, and by honouring the culture. My father explicitly told me "If you go to a country, you respect the law, people and culture. If you no like, don't go. Stay where you are." Many migrants come to a new nation and are grateful, some are entitled. Hence why the former help nations grow and the latter, well, they are what they are, lol.

Wow. Lots of thoughts on this one. 1) Thank you gents for this conversation. 2) Man: when Shapiro starts talking, it’s almost like I hit “double-speed” on my audio 😂 3) I never knew his history, so I enjoyed learning about who he was before he became who people know him as. 4) I really enjoyed this interview. I think he was a fascinating and wonderful guest and I really appreciated what he had to say along with getting a bit more insight about how he feels along with who he is (outside of public opinions on him). Great video. 😊
