Enjoyed your content. Another flower farmer here. I took all the Gardener’s Workshop Courses and Lisa Mason Ziegler gave us great sunflower tips. When your sowing in the cell trays, put a minimum of 2 seeds per cell, this allows you to grow double the amount of sunflowers in the same tray. Also it keeps the flower head small for bouquets. Plus sow the same variety in the tray so they’ll germinate at the same time for you. Hope that helps. Wish you continued success!!

Laura at Garden Answer just put out a video today where they had Swirsky mites appllied to their garden via drone to combat white flies and thrips. This prevents the need for spraying which kills your bumble bee (male) population and protects teh environment as well. A Win WIN soultion! Give it a listen.

Hello from New Zealand! We use something called alstroemeria netting which is made of wire so fully reusable and easy to roll off the beds after the crop is finished. We use a battery-powered hedge trimmer to trim the crop just above the netting before removing it. It is expensive to buy, but so worth it!

"Will I never not be hot again" That is August's best description. Love it! And so happy to find a local farmer I can follow with the same weather and bugs. I'll have to make a trip up there this fall.

After June 1st I plant my sunflower seeds directly in the ground because of the transplant issue in the heat. I also find I’m able to plant more in a short period of time by mass direct seeding 🌻 Happy Planting 💐

You guys are just hilarious. 😅And what a great idea to take August off! I hope it's a nice and restful break for your fam. I have never heard of that sunflower head eating pest. How sad! And I feel you on the ProCuts.They actually take about 80 days for me and bloom over 3 weeks! So I think you're right we just need to plant more. I'm also experimenting with other varieties like the Vincent's and Sunrich series. When you are planting on the scale that you are I think direct seeding is key. And the only way to be successful at that is by WAY overplanting. I would experiment a small section and see how it goes. Maybe cover with frost cloth while germinating. The Dirt on Flowers latest podcast talks about a tractor implement for direct seeding sunflowers so maybe look into that? New toy for the hubby? 😅 Sunflower Selections has best seed prices (many people don't know they are the makers of the ProCuts!) and have a bunch more pollen-free varieties as well! You can buy them by the thousands for much cheaper than Johnny's, even Geo's. My best selling sunflower is an heirloom variety from Baker Creek called Double Sunking and vase life is longer than any other variety! Seed is expensive so figuring out how to save it true to type is what I'm working on. My husband and I just had our first farmers market last weekend and it went awesome so we are super thankful for that and also getting ready to open up a drive thru flower shack on our property. More info and tips for social media marketing would be so helpful! It's been encouraging following along while you adapt and grow your business. I have lots of praying mantis in my garden, some lady bugs and I don’t spray anything, my whole backyard is flowers, but I’m just small time. Wondering if praying mantis would help cut down bug pressure, but spray might kill them too? Loved your video!!!

You guys are so funny!! So my advice would be instead of pesticides maybe try beneficial bugs.. there should be a insectary near by where you can order predators for all the bad bugs. 😅

Just curious... Your "sawed off" seedlings sound exactly like cutworms - do you have those where you are? They only come out in the dark, so they're hard to notice, but they basically saw off the seedling near ground level. If you come out at night with a headlamp, you can spot them. Farmers all around us lose sometimes 50% of their seedlings this way in the spring. We have a flock of ducks that helps keep the cutworms (and grasshoppers) in our garden under control luckily, so we send the ducks into the beds to root around before planting, and it really helps. In really bad scenarios, people put cutoff dixie cups around each plant to protect them until the plants get larger (the cutworms can only fit their bodies around small stems). Anyway maybe that's not what's happening to you but your description sounded exactly like cutworms!

How do you sell them for so much compared to people just picking some up at Dillons/Walmart. How do you water them-well water or do you have to factor in a water charge? What kind of bugs do you have the most problem with? Do you have bindweed?

Did you plant the marigolds next to the Xenia's? Because they repel bugs. I use them for that reason in my veggie plot.
