LTTE wanted a sperate nation, not a merger with India, supporting them would've been a big disaster for India. TN would've become a warzone. If one has travelled in UK, Germany & Canada etc and met Sri lankan Tamils, they don't mix with Indian Tamils. There is palpable disdain one can sense.

LTTE was not the ONLY Tamil resistance movement in Sri Lanka. There were turf battles among the militant groups too. Anyway.. India was sympathetic to the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka. Infact, it was R&AW that armed and trained some of these militant groups to armtwist the Lankan government to stop marginalizing the Tamils, halt the violence and come to the negotiating table. IPKF was just sent to deter the Sri Lankan forces. Infact, they were welcomed by the local Tamils in Jaffna. It was LTTE under Prabhakaran who went back on their word and refused to surrender their weapons and attacked BOTH the IPKF and the Sri Lankan forces. What was supposed to be a short and easy mission for the IPKF turned into a drawn out conflict.

Sir with due respect to your emotions and opinion I would like to say you are grossly wrong on some points. Firstly no body in India doubts fighting ability of tamils. I don't know how you get this thought. 1) Its shocking that you are saying that we did false chest thumping after Balakot strike ? What you want to say? IAF crossed IB and hit target. Even the commercial satellite images released to challenge IAF claims actually showed Spice 2000 strikes impact. ISPR and pak armed forces kept the terror hide out building closed and out of reach for 45 days to cover up things. An Italian journalists exposes pak claims and now she under their watch list. There long list points for this topic. 2) No body burried the fact that we lost 1 jet and 1 helicopter after balakot. The people rejoice because our pilot despite being in inferior jet managed to shot down a superior F 16. The number of circumtancial evidence for it has been given by pakistani themselves in their attempts to cover up. Again its a long and seperate topic. 3) From pure military point of view Indian army did not lost to LTTE First of all there were several Tamil soldiers in India troops also. So what do you mean lost to tamils? It was long CI operations with number of guerrilla warfare style battles. In the major strategic operation that is Operation Pavan Indian army succeeded in taking control of Jaffna from LTTE after long bitter fighting in series of engagements. Yes within the operation Pavan there were also some small operations especially in the beginning like Jaffna University landing in which Indian troops were successfully ambushed by LTTEs. But in overall Operation Pavan Indian army stood victorious. Now, please note that for any military force to engaged any CI operations in an given area, to sustain the consolidating position and imporve its success in military terms, the military force has to stay there for very long time. It case of sri lankan operations it was not the Indian army who asked to come back. It was pressure from all side the Indian army despite there opposition were pulled out. Now, do note that on one hand the pro LTTE sympathizers in India were putting domestic pressure and on other hand both Nationalist Singhalies and Tamil tigers were strongly opposed to presence of Indian forces. Infact the the sri lakan govt. of Ranasinghe Premadasa covertly helped LTTE to fight Indian army. In nut shell it was not the Indian army which lost but definitely it was Indian foreign policy and diplomacy which lost in sri lanka. It was R&AW that trained LTTE. Indian army was not supposed to sent at first place and then it was not supposed to be called back at that stage. Regards.

Should their human rights have been violated so remorselessly? I am not siding with LTTE here, please do not read this otherwise.
