@sergnemo2379

You people are clueless 😂😂 Its honestly comical how many uneducated people with zero experience feel the need to comment on things like this. Grinder discs WILL NOT cut through fingers 😂 I’ve hit my handed with them plenty of times, best case it makes a small tear.. worst case the blade will shatter on impact and leave you with a slightly worse cut.. Picking up a piece of 4’x10’ sheet metal in my shop poses a WAYYYYY higher risk of major injury than using a grinder (especially when you’re experienced with it..) Keep doin you Master Sh. I used to flatten large slabs of Redwood decades ago, an 8 foot straight edge and a big power plane was the first step followed by belt sanding and then finish sanders. You do it all day every day and you get very fast and good at it. For a tiny slab like that I would power plane it way faster than a router could.

Excellent basic idea, but looks like it needs some "tuning". Looks to me like it wants a bit more support (perhaps a few more "legs" on the rails the rollers move on, and some angle-iron on the carriage?) but aside from that, appears to do the job pretty well. Think I might try something real similar for a project I've been tinkering with for a while without actually getting quite what I was hoping for.

Cross slide rails should have been rotated 45 degrees so they wouldn't flex so much under the router weight and you pressing down on it. Otherwise great simple design.
@rodschmidt8952
@rodschmidt8952 8 күн бұрын
You mean the long rails? Or the short ones? Of course the long rails have a corner up (which seems like the least stiff configuration, am I not correct?) to keep the rollers from falling off.
@wheresmyskin
@wheresmyskin 8 күн бұрын
@@rodschmidt8952 meant the short ones. When watching the video you can notice slight flex in those short rails where router sits. It might come from the weight of the router or from pushing downward with your hands. But then of course this can be considered as "good enough" for hand planing later :)

I would add bearing rollers to the cross slide as well once the rails are turned 45 degrees, instead of box section sliding on box section, same as the longitudinal setup. Great job though.

Great idea and concept but using the wrong kind of bearing. You could have bought V groove with bearings installed from Grainger or McMaster-Carr. Would have been faster and cheaper probably. Those ball bearings are not sealed and are not made for axial loads. Great job though!

I had a close call using a cutting disc with one hand. It snagged, flew out of my hand and whizzed past my ear. Could easily have hit me in the face or neck. I vowed never to do it again. Also, you really need to stop reaching over the top of it. One day it will snag and flick up out of control and it cause you a nasty injury. No job is so important that It can't be done safely 👍

Great concept! Router/bit is too small to be practical for all but the smallest pieces. Think 3 HP and a 2" bit for a start. 1/4" shank tools are way too fragile for a tough job like flattening a slab Tube is too light, too flexible. Most woodworking benches don't have steel sides .... maybe rethink the mounting. Rollers under the tube is a wonderful idea! Maybe version 2.0 will have dust collection.

I'm certainly not a pro with all tools, and seen many different ideas for a similar tool to flatten wood using a router, but can anyone explain why an electric hand planer is favored less than a router? It seems to me that you could cover more surface area per pass. Wouldn't that be more efficient?
@ArthurCheesebag84
@ArthurCheesebag84 4 күн бұрын
Specialty blades and I am willing to bet more people have routers than planers . That is my guess.
@MA-SH

The plane takes up a lot of space, it needs a large area to work if it is a design like with a milling cutter

It’s not the efficiency of the tool, it’s the ingenuity shown making a tool to work for him.
@gcranston83
@gcranston83 15 сағат бұрын
The power plane is only about 14in. long, which makes it inefficient for flattening things more than 28in. long. This means you have to do a lot of checking a you go to make sure you're heading towards flat. Long straight edges, winding sticks, small passes, etc. Router sleds, if the rails are stiff enough, are much more precise and easy to use.

Well the title captured me but the moving thumbnail told me it wasn’t a hack to make my phone better. But here goes nothing, click. 3:56 a wheelie bar for a drag car 3:57 okay apparently not. 🤨 A stump grinder bar thingy. After a while I was kinda hoping it was a rototiller straight line keeper. My rototillee loves pulling to one side if I try to go deep with it. But okay, level a board wider than a planer can.
