Part One of my tutorial covers music up to measure 34. I discussed how to play the repeated chords lightly and rhythmically, how to make the jumps clean and accurate, how to keep your hands supple and reduce the tension when playing heavy chordal sections. Other details such as tempo, pedal, and fingering suggestions are also included.

This is the most wonderful tutorial on one of my favorite Rachmaninoff preludes. This G minor Prelude and the no 4 in D major, and the G major op 32 no 5 have always been 3 Preludes I have "played around" with but never quite finished! Thanks to your videos I am now back at the piano, determined for master all three once and for all!

@@tingtingzhang Hi, you said that for amator pianists tempo should not be our top focus. But is there a minimum tempo required for this piece to be correctly interpreted ?

Such a wonderful teaching, such a great video!! Right now I am not playing or teaching this piece, but everything you said reminded me of something in the pieces. I’m teaching right now. Interesting how so many principles of playing and teaching apply from one piece to the next.

If you have big hands and you feel comfortable connecting, fine. But in general when playing fast octaves and chordal passages, letting go of the notes quickly is always a good way to release tensions.
