The world is gobbling up the history of the Chola Empire, thanks to the successful release of the Tamil movie Ponniyan Selvan. But Kulottunga Chola's story remains neglected.
Today, let's explore how Kulottunga Chola -- a Telugu Chola -- saved the Empire from near-destruction at the hands of Vikramaditya, the ambitious Chalukya Emperor.
This is a tale worth experiencing. Enjoy!

To learn at a deep level you have to opt for higher education in history. Which more than half of South Indians have not read! You come here and complain. Including Islamophobics of another level. Those who studied it beyond school had to study these empires in depth. Also, those that studied them, did not call it boring subjects then. So, you don't get depth in school; you get to read all history in basics. School wasn't wrong your taste in learning has changed.

How come we never learned about this great king and his achievements in my school days. I studied in Chennai, and I remember that the great Chola kingdom was just a 12 lines paragraph in my history book that had individual chapters on Akbar, Babur, Aurengjeb, Gandhi, Nehru, Ashoka, WW1 and WW2. It is a shame how much our own history was nothing but a ignored text in the history books of our own country.

There is a Tamil literature work on the war between Kalinga and the Chola Empire witnessed and written by Jayamkondaar named "Kalingattuparani". The details are so intricate. @@Abhil295 Well, that's a little bit iffy. Vizag was invaded many times. The last known legend before the Brits came by was that there's a temple of Lord Visakha or in some cases Vaisakha or Vaisakhi that is now drowned in the sea. I do not know who was the ruling king then, but I think it should be the Vijayanagara Empire. Another legend that's possible is a Buddhist monastery that was found in the city, under the patronage of Visakha. Too many stories of origin, not sure which is actually true.

As much as I appreciate the gaga around Cholas lately, I'd be really glad to see some content on pandyas, Cheras, Pallavas and Kallabhras. Pandayans in particular, as they were the sworn arch-rivals of Cholas and we're arguably the most ancient dynasty of the Indian subcontinent itself. After Cholas ousted the Pandyan kings, the latter lived inconspicuously for several centuries and rose in ranks as feudal lords. Eventually to beat their Chola contemporaries and revive Madurai as their capital. I really wish to see content on this. Please do consider and keep up the great work. Cheers mate! @@jaganathanb4852 I don't want tobe biased to any side. Both sinhalese and tamils suffered from war. Many innocent tamil as well as sinhalese civilians died from it. Both sides commited crimes. LTTE also did no good for tamils. If you think so please thoroughly go through the unbiased documentaries available. So many civilians were killed by LTTE by bombings and also by invading border villages at night. Simply google. If you are stupid enough to compare Cholas with a terrorist organization such as LTTE, you are doing such a shame to Chola dynasty. Because of the actions of the LTTE, the actual possibility for a political solutions for tamils in Sri Lanka vanished. If you can't believe me since i,m a Sinhalese just ask this from a tamil based outside of North and East in Sri Lanka. Further do you know that many tamils in Sri Lanka lives outside of Northe and East with Sinhalese in harmony? I actually have so many tamil and muslim friends from my school days we studied together. Fun fact: the Kingdom of Vengi, where Kulottunga's father Rajaraja Narendra ruled, was a branch of the Chalukya dynasty, ruled by the Eastern Chalukyas. There were actually three Chalukya dynasties in South India (not to be confused with the Chaulukyas of Gujarat and Chalukyas of Lata), the first was the Badami Chalukya dynasty, which ruled from 543-753, before being subdued by the Rashtrakutas. The second was the Eastern Chalukya dynasty of Vengi, which ruled from 624-1102, and was originally a branch of the Badami Chalukyas before it was vassalized to the Rashtrakuta and later Chola Empire. the third was the Western Chalukya Empire of Kalyani, who originally feudatories to the Chalukyas, ruling from 973 to 1189, and is the empire that Vikramaditya VI here rules over.

This video does a great job covering an important period in Chola history. But it is important to remember that the movie Ponniyin Selvan (and the novel it is based on) take place in an earlier period of Chola rule during the reign of Sundara Chola. The younger son of the emperor, who is leading an army in Sri Lanka in the story, is the one who would later rule as Raja Raja Cholan or Ponniyin Selvan (son of the river Ponni). Both are central characters in the movie and novel and the whole plot of the novel is about the early days of Raja Raja Chola and a conspiracy to overthrow the Cholas. Just important to remember to distinguish the subject of this video from the plot of the movie PS-1.

Excellent video on a much ignored, but historically important, south Indian monarch. I really think that you have one of the best youtube channels in English featuring people and events from Tamil / south Indian history. The imperial Cholas are little known outside of India although they constituted one of the great dynasties of the Indian subcontinent. Another period that would be wonderful to explore would be that of the Tamil Sangam Age (300BC-300AD). Little known is that in this period south Indian society was dominated by a warrior class with a fierce heroic culture and code of honour, and with colourful pre and post battle customs and rituals. The period saw the genesis of south Indian martial arts (Varma ati, silambam, kalarippayattu) and, like the Japanese samurai, there were even forms of martial suicide. Archaeology has also revealed that some sword blades used were made from unusually high quality steel. The Cholas, Pandyas and Cheras (and their various feudatories) were in frequent or incessant conflict, and many of the kings (such as Karikalan, Senguttuvan or Neduncheliyan) glorified through war poetry. There are many accessible books on Sangam Age heroic poetry, and on ancient Tamil society and history in general which give a vivid picture of the martial elite and their internecine cattle raiding and wars. I have myself done many years of research into the warfare of those times.
