Welcome to another interview with Honey Bee Experts.
I've broadened my interview categories by adding young Up-and-Comers in the area of Honey Bee Management and Research.
Atreya Manaswi is a 10th grade student who is also conducting research at the University of Florida's Entomology and Nematology Departments. He is also involved with the USDA, in Gainesville, FL.
He is focused on experiments involving Honey Bee Nutrition which includes Pollen Substitute Management.
He's also involved in experiments which identify the BEST baits for the dreaded Small Hive Beetle. Including the Fabrication of a Novel Volatile Blend, based on Beer Chemical Constituency for Hive Beetle Management.
Atreya is in his fourth year of honey bee research, and credits Dr. Jamie Ellis for bringing him into the UF/IFAS Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory.
LINKS for further reading, or items mentioned in this interview are listed below:
NOTE: The reference to specific experiment parameters (such as temperature), that were cited in this interview should not be taken as "exact", please wait for the published paper for details regarding experiments described here.
If you would like to contact Atreya Manaswi directly, he has provided his email address:
Atreya Manaswi: manaswiatreya@gmail.com
Atreya referenced Mini-Beetle Blasters that were used in the bait tests. You can do a google search for them, or follow this link to an Amazon listing: amzn.to/3ewrOfS
Using affiliate links such as the one above, is a great way for you to show your support for this channel.
Atreya referenced AP23 as the most attractive pollen substitute during the tests he was involved in. AP23 Pollen Substitute is available at Dadant.com, a 5 lb Bag is currently $24.95.

Hi Fred, My youngest daughter and I made the seasonal shift with my hives this weekend. You may remember I discovered one of my two hives seemed very quiet. Well, I think I know what happened to it and this interview verified it. I discovered several shb larvae crawling on the bottom board as well as several dying beetles. When Atreya mentioned bees absconding because of harassment I was very glad I chose not to combine hives. I think that was the hive that I received already "pre-loaded" as you said, with pests. I will not buy from that seller again. The company in Minooka, IL sells packages and queens and I will try them next year. I also learned that the healthy hive had begun to store honey in the Flow super. That was a great sight. I did put Hive Alive packs on both of them but expect only one to be used. I bought BeeCozy wraps from the guy(David Meyers) in IL also but used only one. My "Protect a Bee"s arrived today. We're supposed to have some warmer days ahead and I'll install one then. My plan is to allow the dead hive to freeze out this winter. I'm disappointed at this turn of events but this IS my first year and I've learned a lot. I will deal with next year, next year. My husband is making great progress and VERY anxious to drive again!! Your interview with that awesome young man is inspiring. He will be one to follow in the future, like David Peck. Liked their observation of the young bees going to more pollen as they matured. Really like my Apimaye hive feeders and I loaded a half pattie of Hive Alive in one feeder and a half pollen pattie in the other to see what they'd take first, most, or exclusively. Enjoyed seeing they were taking both and with those feeders they have to choose what they're needing/wanting. Will check them as the weeks progress to see if I can notice the ages of those on each feed. Am in the PNW and just this past week took away the liquid feed as our nights are below 46 F now. Our rainy season is 3 weeks late this year and the bees are loving the extra days of sun to fly and EAT more of my winter stash for them 😁 This young man is amazing......thnx to both of you for this episode!

@@FrederickDunn After one week I have noticed they are deep digging into the Hive Alive , and I know it is way early to be giving it. But the unusual year we've had for Spring and Fall it may be they need it. Even the certification class I am in right now the instructor is in a quandary as to feeding her hives. Absconding is becoming a problem with the wildfires near us. So much smoke. Am waiting for a handheld digital microscope with a screen to quickly get photos to try determining ages of bees on each feeder. They are just way too testy now for me to keep it open and try to get a good long look at them.

We are trying the peppermint oil candy. Here in Texas SHB made their home with the temperatures and humidity. We do not crush it as bees will carry it out quickly. Also peppermint flavor candy is not the same, has to bee peepermint oil candy, I place them on top of the honey frames, on the last or second from the edge. Colonies with the candy will 3-4 SHB colonies with shows 12+ SHB. That is not the only "system" we use, packing the bees tightly, using proper size equipment, swiffer sheets and peppermint candy are the system we used. We tried oil and DE on the beetles blaster, oil goes rancid and most often than not, accidents removing them will kill bees inclusing the queen, and blaster with DE will get propolised shut by the bees. In our yard, 25 hives are managed and other 20 hives 400ft away are not kept at all, no management, no treatment, no feeding, nothing, letting varroa, SHB and wax moth completely take over and complete the full cycle; and the other 25 hives are monitor and managed for all pests.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
Are you going to try beer as bait? That sounded promising. That's unfortunate about the other apiary so nearby.
@thenewbeejournal
@thenewbeejournal Жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn I will certainly try the beer; there is an abundance of SHB in one of the yards, and they do love laying eggs on the feeders; they are pretty much forcing us to us the round top feeders as larva has a tough time getting out of those, as opposed to frame feeders where you can see the larvae pouring out by the dozens. Yes, the other apiary is truly sad, most times I open feed next to them before I work on mine as robbing becomes a real issue and it becomes impossible to work sometimes; they also place a lot of stress on mine as they are varroa, SHB and wax moth factories, I've volunteered to check his hives from time to time and see some completely slimed and other absolutely covered with thousands of wax moth cocoons, those hives keep me in my toes with ours, but at the same time let's me test if our bees are indeed displaying the VSH genetics we are promoting.

Very interesting and well spoken young man. It becomes apparent quickly though (with many researchers) that they have little to no prior actual beekeeping experience to guide them. The idea of monitoring how much pollen a newly emerged honeybee "eats" is just one example. Is he aware that pollen patties themselves are a big contributor to hive beetle populations? I don't know. Still watching. Hopefully he uses his intelligence and curiosity to select for bees that can survive, rather than substances to assist them with becoming more helpless.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
He's under the guidance of Dr. Jamie Ellis, I don't think Atreya decided the parameters. Nurse bees are the largest consumers of the pollen resources. Are we talking patties, or Pollen subs in powder form?
@Swarmstead
@Swarmstead Жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn I believe he was referring to pollen sub, but I'm not clear if he meant powder or patties. Are newly emerged bees nurse bees right away? Does consumption volume correlate with the actual nutrition of a substance? I don't actually know.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
@@Swarmstead He noted that the best and most attractive protein was the actual pollen. Subs are never going to completely measure up but can serve as a nutritional stand-in when the real thing is absent. These are lab-controlled experiments, and it really teaches them the process of experimentation, and how to present results. They also dissect and evaluate the digestive system of the bees and that's beyond the scope of what most keepers will be doing. I'm looking forward to reading the completed study. He only has a part in the research. Newly emerged workers are cleaning surfaces, but are also ingesting a lot of nutrition. It's broad in scope for sure. We need both practical beekeepers and those who are willing to work in the lab environment. Thanks for watching and commenting.

A new approach, unbiased by anecdotal evidence, hearsay and old habits. "If he hasn't been keeping bees for 20 years he knows nothing" syndrome is so damaging to our hobby. He knows more about bees than you and I combined and has earned the right to speak. We never demand would-be pilots own a 747 for 20 years before they learn to fly. Frederick, I want to update you on the beer trap. I put them in on Friday and checked them today, Sunday. The day temps have been very close to 80 degrees and night in the high 50’s. You can imagine my surprise to find the beer gone and nothing in the traps. I don’t think the bees drank the beer. I believe it evaporated. I added 25 ml to each trap again (this amount fills the trap a little over half full) and will check again in 2 days to see what happens. The oil traps had one beetle in one hive and none in the other. I am supposed to have enough new traps delivered this week and will expand the study to 10 hives.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
That's very interesting, thanks for that update. I look forward to your follow on information. Based on your other baits, it doesn't sound like you have many small hive beetles at the moment. Are you seeing many that aren't in the traps when you open the cover?
@jimhughes6794
@jimhughes6794 Жыл бұрын
Frederick, I was going to expand the beer traps to 10 hives. I am reassessing that decision. Today, Monday, I decided to see if the beer had evaporated from Sunday and discovered that a little had evaporated but worse, white mildew or mold was growing in the beer. I don’t have a lab so I can’t verify except by observation. I am going to follow through with six hives as the mold causes me a lot of angst. The temperature is forecast to fall tonight to the mid to high 30’s with day time temps in the 50’s until the weekend when it rebounds to the 70’s. It is currently 74 degrees here now. That may help with mold in general but, not in the hive with a temperature in the 90’s. I found only 1 beetle in the beer traps and 2 in the oil trap. The beetle barns continue to have most trapped with 5. I have been using the peppermint candy since I heard about it at the Hive Life conference in January. My spring beetle pressure was light with the peppermint. I had a few but not near as many as last year. Fall has been harder with an average of 11 beetles in the barns and several “got aways” on the inner cover. I was not using oil traps because I make a bigger mess with them than I can stand. I spill some oil, way to often to suit me. I am being extremely careful with both the beer and oil traps in the installation and removal from the hives. Do you have any thoughts on putting some type of mold and mildew inhibitors in the beer? Perhaps you could ask the speaker about it. He is in The South too. Did he find any in his hives? Feel free to phone me if you have any questions. I think I gave my card to your wife at the conference with my number. I would love to talk with you about this new angle and see what a smart man could tell me. Thanks for your help. Jim

I agree, we need many more dedicated to the bees and all pollinators, lol but Miller High Life beer attracts SHB, I'll try em on what I drink first, then some Keystone my son in law left in my fridge about a year ago, that's some really cheap and nasty tasting stuff. Who knew SHBs were alcoholics and tasted beer through their namdibula?

We need some to do research on Kakogo virus in honeybje*es. It's rMNA is only 2% different than deformed wing virus, but it makes guard bees much more aggressive than normal.
