Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzfaq.info_c...
Synopsis: The Kurdish fight for independence still rages on, with no sign of ending. While the Kurds claim they want a state like all other nations, one that is progressive socially with women playing a key role, they are labelled by the Turkish government as terrorists. In this report ABC Australia speaks to Kurdish fighters on the grounds, as well as their leader, Abdullah Öcalan.

You need to understand, Kurds are a subordinate race in Turkey. Turkey like the name suggests is a nation-state based on the Turkish ethnic group, and Kurds who are indegenious people of nothern mesopotamia and eastern anatolia are forced in a marriage with the Turkish nation. Many Kurds in Turkey have been displaced from their homes throughout the country, forced to use turkish names, banned to speak Kurdish, and to this day Kurdish is restricted. Any political opposition is meet with allegations to be PKK and put in jail. Any journalist reporting on the issues are meet with the same fate as the politicians. Turkey has weaponized contra terrorism to kill its opposition silently. Yet people accept this situation because Turkey has weaseled its way into NATO and holds a strategic geopolitical space. Turkish propaganda constantly steamroll Kurdish voices, and that is why people think Kurds in Turkey are happy and feel "Turkish". In fact Kurds are called mountain turks, there is fascist group called the "grey wolves" in all the institutions, police and military in Turkey, these people hold powerful positions and see Kurds as subhuman. Acknowledging your Kurdishness is looked down upon in turkish soceity. They are trying to kill the Kurdish spirit. Turkey has gotten away with a lot of cruelty and injustice but Kurds will be heard. And if you find this unbelievable, then think about how Turkey to this day DENIES THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE. I don't wish for any nation of people to be treated as second class citizens in their ancestral homelands.

Stop making up tales from your butthurt. Kurds are indigenous. There is no proof. In fact Kurds were living in mountains of today's Iran. They arrived Anatolia because of Ottomans. The majority of them escaped from Saddam during the 70s. Let's look at all historical maps such as Marco Polo's map. Kurdish Turkish marriages are new things. Despite your lies actually Turks didn't want to marry you because of how you treat women badly. Didn't I kill your own sisters because of Tore ? Didn't we try to teach us it's bad through tv series, books etc. ? Tore was Turkish term and it was civilized word but you destroyed it just like everything

Also, yes I believe that the Kurds should be given their own state. When Britain and France drew the modern borders of the Middle East, they deliberately left the Kurds stateless. Some say this was deliberate, others say a miscalculated decision that wasn’t intentional. I would say considering how Corrupt, deceitful and oppressing the British and French regimes were at the time, it appears this was intentional so the Turkish state would constantly be at war and at odds with certain Kurdish communities.

I believe they did want to give Kurds an independent state but the Turks didn't allow it, the Turks kept fighting the British to regain lost territories, if it wasn't for the British, Turkey would be ruling over most of northern Iraq and Syria If there's anyone to blame for Kurds being stateless it's not Iran, Iraq, Syria, France or the English it's Turkey and Ataturk.

The Kurds are the indigenous people of this land, Mesopotamia, which is also called the Fertile Crescent, and we Kurds call it Kurdistan. The Kurds have not come from anywhere (except with the general human migration from Africa), but have always lived between the Zagros and Tauros mountains, in the valleys and on the mountains, near the Euphrates and on the Tigris. There are now interdisciplinary scientific studies that prove this (e.g. by Ferdinand Hennerbichler).

Altough this documentary includes some facts, it is also extreemly biased. In order to understand exactly what is going on in there you need to know the history of that region. Furthermore, in current demographic in Turkey, half of the ethnic kurds live outside that region. It is outrageous to expect any soverene country to accept the demands of some seperatist group even attacts and kill civilian in the region who does not share the same idiology with them.
@newleft2254

@@TheBagarali Ironic. If you knew anything about the "region" yourself, you'd know Kurds are indigenous to the area whereas Turks are of a racial group called 'Turkic' who originate from central Asia. Turks are not Middle Eastern. Also, calling Kurds separatist is like a hillbilly calling Native Americans separatists. Or calling Palestinians separatists. They belong there. Who is separating whom? They've been killed and forced out of their homes. Being Kurdish on Kurdish soil was against the law until 1995 because of this "sovereign" country and it still is in real-world practice - The Turkish nation state is the separatist and terrorists. The translations are sometimes very misleading, the whole narrative is very one sided and clearly biased. The claims against the pkk are clearly pushed under the rug and not further questioned by the interviewer. The words öcalan uses are the most obvious things he would say and claim to defend himself, and some words sound very mysogonistic and self centered

We have no friends but the mountains. It’s the reality. After we beat ISIS in Syria, the US under Trump pulled out and left Putin and Assad to clean up and regain their territories and brutal regime. Turkey told America to stop supporting the YPG who they called “terrorist” while turkey since 2013 had made huge holes in the border fence to Syria so anyone coming to join ISIS would have easy access to Syria. They only closed the border when the Kurds took over the border crossings from ISIS..

that is odd that you people are so humanitarians and so good hearted constantly blabbing about the plight of the Kurds and yet none of you spoke of the plight of the Palestinians. Kurds do live in Turkey in peace and thrive in business and everything they wish to achieve, they even have political parties. Turkey however will not sit idle when their population is subjected to terror by some of these folks. Europe shouts human rights constantly and ultimately they are the biggest human rights violators.

If you're talking about the PKK i can say you're wrong. Their original guerilla were trained by the PLO themselves in the Bekaa Valley, they have said many times they are against Israel's actions against the Palestinians, and if you'd know their ideologial and practical standpoints you know they are against Israel in every aspect. Kurds in Turkey do not live in peace, don't listen to Turkish articles, instead listen to people who lived through it, this video itself has people saying the Turks killed them in 13:05 to 14:15, not only that but these parties you're mentioning have been banned more than 5 times, each time coming up with a new name to fight politically again, you cannot put 40 years of extremely complex politic and militaristic history in such a small argument, without the PKK Kurds would not exist, a whole generation cannot speak Kurdish because of Turkish oppression. I will assume you're pro-Turkey because they are Pro-Palestine, that is only on the outside, in fact Turkey and Israel are good trade partners, many of the drones they are using today are Israeli, and with the last Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict this has become more apparent as not only Turkey supports Azerbaijan, but also Israel, which by Erdogan's populism would make it seem like they would be against it, but there's not a word against it.

@@amed2408 I greatly respect your point of view and you seem well educated on the topic. I am not fan of any particular race, however I do stand against injustice and that is where my voice is. Most of the time the oppressed resorts to random killing and that is for me is injustice and that is why I stand against Hamas for example and even the PLO they are not 100% guilt free. In my comment I brought up the issue of selective plight, one that matters too much and others you do not even hear about it. Western European countries use your cause and the cause of others to go against Islam and Muslim countries in order for them to be weak and ultimately could care less about the whole issue in the first place. I deplore what your people did in northern Iraq where they created a country within a country stealing what is dear to iraqui with the help of Israel. I use to care for Kurds much more than Palestinians because of Saladin and after what I saw happening in Iraq, Turkey and Syria and their association with France especially perhaps made me disregard everything else.

@@blsstre Ah, i see where you're coming from. Yes, France and the EU is currently leveraging our role in fighting ISIS against Turkey, which i cannot give a good opinion about, since most of us are Muslims, yet fellow Muslims persecuted us, i do agree that the EU plays nasty games for their own political interest, as a Kurd i've seen it many times throughout the years, but reality is that we've been persecuted by many of these same "Muslims" , and we need stability, currently we've only given most of that stability to ourselves in the form of armed resistance and politics, about Iraqi Kurdistan i must add that i do not agree with the leaders and parties that currently rule, but their justification to self govern is a very valid one, because whenever the Arabs ruled over us they used to persecute us, harass us, and in the worst cases murder us in the masses, Israel saw this as an opportunity to have a buffer zone between them and Iranian forces and their proxies and have also invested in Iraqi Kurdistan, this is a very simplified argument, but i think it serves its purpose. Armed resistance forms if the living conditions are unbearable, and this was the case for the PKK and for what we now have in Iraqi Kurdistan. Any person does not have the right to rule over another, whether it's an Arab ruling a Kurd, or a Kurd ruling over an Arab, by this statement alone i believe that nation states should be abolished entirely, people groups have different needs linguistically, culturally and socially, and the only way we can thrive without war is to work together, call eachother by names instead of our ethnic background, this is present in northern Syria today, and we can see that even with limited help from the outside they are thriving as a government and a people as a whole, regardless of Kurd, Turk, Arab, Syriac, Christian etc. and ofcourse, just like any militia, the PKK has it's fair share of human rights abuses, but like Abdullah Ocalan says in this very video, it's not a general thing, and they are trying to keep everything under control.

@Biji Serok Apo Yes we are brothers, and I can never be against justice. With regard to having a stance while being Kurd living in Turkey, is complicated. I would remain positive and I hope both sides would come to a final solution where each side can live at peace. It gives me no pleasure seeing innocent people deprived of life at the same token I hope the Kurds would understand that getting help from the devil is not in their long term interest, also it is best for them to live peacefully within a much bigger country rather than trying to slice a peace of land for themselves and act as the Trojan horse.

@@amed2408 I personally believe in armed resistance and I believe that was taken by force can only be returned by force. And yes a lot of injustice within our Islamic world, no one can deny that. I failed to understand what the Kurds want from Turkey besides cutting a piece of land and having it join northern Iraq, because this path is practically impossible and Turkey will not surrender one inch of its land to create a new county that might be used against it, what they actually want ?

Sakık aka fingerless Zeki, who listed his reasons for joining the PKK as "family pressure, rebellion against the lordship and state pressure", remained in the mountain squad of the organization for 18 years.[4] An execution order was given by the organization for Sakık, who had a disagreement with PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.[5][6] Thereupon, Sakık left the organization on March 15, 1998 and took refuge in the KDP Peshmerga.[6][7] He was captured along with his brother Arif Sakık during a military operation in Duhok city of the Kurdistan Regional Government on April 13, 1998 and brought to Turkey.[8] It was confirmed years later by the National Intelligence Organization that Mahmut Yıldırım, codenamed "Green", was used in the operation.[9]

I am aware this comment comes almost 23 years after this documentary was shot and a lot of things have changed since. Yet, I cannot help but feel this was such a biased and sad piece of filming. Admittedly, the treatment of Kurdish people in Turkey from the late 70s all the way through to late 90s by various Turkish governments and particular Turkish sectors have been appalling. Leaving the conspiracy theories aside (some of which are no longer conspiracies but sadly facts, i.e. the involvement of British and American enterprise in the region), a Kurdish uprising as a response to decades of state-led discrimination can at the very least be empathised with, if not defended. One can probably go as far as likening the situation to the treatment of Palestinians under Israeli ruling although the circumstances leading up to both atrocities are arguably very different. However, I find some of the comments made by the presenter quite inflammatory and for the lack of a better word, biased. It is rather disturbing that a British journalist, regardless of how extensive his knowledge of the conflict, is able to make inferences regarding displaced/killed/injured civilians and who the responsibility or the blame should fall on. Turks and Kurds are entitled to have opinions about the matter and both would have reasonable grounds to draw finite and/or "absolute" conclusions. As a Turkish citizen, I empathise with the Kurdish struggle and I find a lot of moral ground in some of the arguments posed by Kurdish people. Unfortunately, I do not think the same can ever be applicable to any outsider irrespective of the outsider's experience and knowledge of the situation. This point is particularly relevant for the British and the Americans.

You don't need to be in the shit to say shit smells. If other countries don't care about the Kurdish struggle then that would play into the Turkish governments hands, as if they need more help steamrolling and suppressing the Kurdish.

"It is rather disturbing that a British journalist, regardless of how extensive his knowledge of the conflict, is able to make inferences regarding displaced/killed/injured civilians and who the responsibility or the blame should fall on." Except for the fact that the female civilian refugee literally stated that none of the violence comes from the PKK, and that they have been good to the civilians. She states that it are armed forces from the Turkish regime that come into their territory and crush their homes, only to place the blame on the PKK. The interviewer's inference was based on a direct testimony of the civilian refugee, hence can be deemed valid.
