Great question on the differences between Conscious Capitalism (CC) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). I would like to add to the answers given. I am super familiar with both CSR & CC. 😊 I agree that the two are not the same, but I also believe they have many similarities and complement each other. "Why you're doing it," is Greg's answer of how CC differs from CSR, but in actuality that is true for both. Greg also mentioned CC is "doing what's right." Again, this is also true of CSR. Alexander mentioned that CSR is something that a company check-marks, something you tack on at the end, something you write a check for to make up for wrongs. I disagree with this in the sense that that's not the original intent of CSR. Yes, over the years countless companies treated CSR that way - just doing what they needed to do to appease the market. This gave CSR a bad name (just marketing propaganda) and now it suffers from a PR blackeye. There are efforts being made to re-direct the CSR narrative (heal that blackeye 😊). Like CC, CSR (to do it right) has to start from the top. Leadership has to make CSR a part of the overall culture and a big part of the company's strategic/operational plan. In my view, I believe if a company follows the tenets of CC, it is in effect, also practicing parts of CSR. Likewise with CSR. Companies that truly adopt CSR strategies at the highest levels, making it a part of everything it does, its corporate culture, they are also in effect practicing some parts of CC. There's so much confusion surrounding CSR. CSR is not just recycling in the community or improving your carbon footprint or supporting various non-profits in the community. It's much more than that. Just like CC, CSR in its true form is focused on treating people (all stakeholders) well, improving their lives. Having said all this, I feel that CC is very much concerned with many of the ideas behind CSR. I don't feel the same for CSR. I think it's easier for a CC-driven company to embrace and deploy CSR the right way. These are just my thoughts. Agree? Disagree? Somewhere in-between?
