Thanks for the coverage! Hyprland is definitely not for everyone, but once you get your configuration down, unless you have that urge to change it every day, it just keeps working for you. I haven't really revamped my config in more than 2 years probably. And yea, you need a bit of experience with Linux and patience, especially in reading wikis and/or searching stuff online :) Currently hyprland is in a massive transition away from wlroots (a pretty big library) so some new bugs do crop up here and there, (like some with steam like you mentioned, which is a notorious PITA) but I am working around the clock to get them squashed day by day.

I've tried many tiling window managers but Hyprland is probably the first one where I could easily find my way around and get something working in a matter of 10-15 minutes. And it looks insanely good too! Really can't wait to see where Hyprland will go in the coming years. Thanks for your hard work!

if youre 1st time WM user, for sure, you will need to spend some time reading the wiki for tinkering. But hyprland has a really good wiki. And once you got the work flow, you dont really need to keep changing settings unless of course you want to tinker / tweak it. PS, as I couldnt attached a link here, there is a small wiki on that dots . and also, for a quick edit, launch SUPER E SUPER H for the hints incase you change the waybar config and also, since youre not a WM user, would be really nice to get your opininion on how to improve the dots youved use here :)

It's true that you need to learn how to manage tiling windows, but what you didn't mention is that it is possible to set a window as floating, change its order, or even create profiles for an app in Hyprland. I have a profile set on virtual desktop 4, in floating mode, with dimensions of 800x800 for my terminal. I can change this by simply clicking SUPER+left click, then dragging in the direction I want to shrink or extend, and it updates the size automatically. This tool has been essential for years because I work a lot with terminals. A DE that adapts to my heavy terminal use is something I don't find as efficient in non-tiling DEs.
@jhonyortiz5
@jhonyortiz5 10 күн бұрын
I think this might have scared some people away. But here is the thing to remember, you can install hyprland along side your preferred DE, kde, gnome, etc... So you can go in and out of hyprland when you want to try something and use your other DE when you still need it.

They are just so trash by default on ultrawide or super ultrawide 32:9 monitors where you literally NEVER want a maximized window. I do like using Kzones on KDE though so I can use configs to slice my monitor up and then either assign apps to the zones or just let KDE remember the last zone an application ran in. Also giving you a mouse or keyboard option to drop an application into a specific zone. Its a best of both worlds option.

Yeah, honestly it's sad they're the only DE which does tiling well enough And one thing i like about the new cosmic DE is that the settings are all in text files, thus it's crazy easy to export your configuration. Gnome and kde both have lots of settings in databases, which there is no way to export

Nah, not that well. I come from Pop!_OS to Fedora and one of the first things was installing pop shell but I like to switch to Hyprland depending on my work. Hyprland makes a better job. I believe @Ja.KooLit deserves more credit for this. First, you have showed a link of HyprV4 3:34 , which is NOT JaKoolit's project but you didnt post JaKoolits projects (Arch and Fedora) anywhere on your video including on the description. but most of the videos including Hyprland configs youve used, there are no links to it. So I really think he deserve more credits for it. We are just lucky cause he try to share to us those scripts, which I think easy to understand, and follow and he does not restrict us from configuring for our own benefits. Sure its not a top notch great looking ricing compared to end-4 and prasanthrangan's and even ML4W's but JakooLit's configs is not complicated compared to those 3 I mentioned

I gave it a try recently. It was interesting but for me it's only a sandbox for customization. I'm using linux on my both systems laptop and desktop and i prefer to USE those but not configure all the time. Of course if this is your hobby to configure/customize days and days then yeah, that a good thing. People always claim that this will improve your developer workflow but all they show is how fast they move their windows around 100 times. Im a developer and my workflow do not consist only of this XD. Imagine how long u have to work to barely cover that time u spent on configuration with time u "saved" on moving windows. No offense, it is a nice piece of software and i glad that people like it. The best thing is to have a choice.

Watching this channel for the first time. Looks beautiful and people on YT talk a lot about it, and tiling window managers in general. I have never explored any tiler myself yet, and actually I'm just in the progress of migrating from Xfce to Plasma, which are both kind of my favourite desktops now. Actually I have both now. But since I mostly use Arch it sounds definitely attractive that Hyprland has explicit support here. Maybe one day I'll give it a try too. Are there people on this planet who still use things like Openbox or Fluxbox actually?

Sure, you do need to install a few packages: hyprland, waybar, swaylock, etc... but you only really need to copy yourself a waybar preset. The default hyprland config file is pretty good to start with. With the simpler/readable default config, its also more feasible to bring it up directly instead of a cheatsheet (for keybindings). Edit: Also I'm not sure what you mean about having to use the command line? For editing configs? You can open something like kate if you want to edit text in that for example. Were you using a runner? There's wofi, anyrun and I'm sure others...

I've been on Hyprland since Nvidia dropped the 555 beta and it has been really solid. Threw all the Nvidia fixes in the wiki at it and even resuming from sleep works with no issues. Zero issues with running games fullscreen. I would recommend that new users stick with the default config and go from there, those over-engineered ones with tons of files just make it more difficult for no tangible gain. Pick a bar, any bar, install it and try the default config. Same for a launcher. I've gravitated towards AGS and fuzzel.

Tiling WMs are cool but to me personally to much of a hassle to set up and more of a nerdy cool thing to do. I love seeing those in Brodie's, Titus' or other people's setups but all of them lack a simple GUI that allows users to tweak settings in an easy way. It's basically the same as what has been with most desktop Linux aspects for the longest time. Plus I don't want to use either Arch or Fedora, so there's that.

I've always wanted to try hyprland but I would want to install it next to KDE Plasma in SDDM so I can occasionally dip my toes in before fully submerging in window management and I worry that'd break things on KDE or vice versa. I also heard a while back it's not as pleasant of an experience with nvidia cards as it is on AMD cards, but that might have changed since. I just need an opportunity where I can gain confidence using a window manager in general, cause I once tried i3-gaps in a VM and it felt very clunky to me. Also, since I do play video games, it would suck to have to set up a gamescope command for literally every game, I love gamescope, I think it's a linux killer app, but mainly for older games that have resolution issues, not something I'd want to set up for every game.

I actually used this setup on multiple machines (KDE + Hyprland w/ SDDM) and I had zero issues so I think it should be fine. I can't exactly speak on the Nvidia side since I have an AMD card though. Earlier this year I moved from KDE to Hyprland just to try out a tiling WM since I'd never used one, and I have no regrets at all. I can't really imagine myself using anything else now, it was an amazing experience which made me fall in love with tiling. Of course, something like this is not for everyone, but if you're interested I'd definitely recommend at least giving it a shot sometime and seeing if it works for you as it did for me. (Not exactly sure what you mean with gamescope btw, personally when I run my games on Hyprland they just work fine, at least through steam.)

Many recommend to create second user account and log into that one with another Desktop Environment. Helps to not mess up the same files, but you need to copy some stuff between them (or sync them).

@@MichaelNROH The problem with this is that I'd need de-duplication, and I don't use btrfs due to the fact that I heard it has a lack of case sensitivity which is no good if you mod games. If I make an entirely new home directory, I'd need to redownload _at minimum_ 50GB worth of stuff to get the most "everyday use" impression of hyprland. Also, I've tried to do this exact thing in the past with XFCE, creating a new home directory still give me a broken xfce4-desktop, so I'm reluctant to try that again.

I love hyprland and I would absolutely use it if it worked better for me. Wayland in general still is a huge problem for me, as I have an NVidia GPU. There were still massive stuttering problems for me in the browser which then were fixed in the 555 driver nvidia-beta update, but that introduced new problems. I also use a large TV via HDMI as my main display which isn't properly recognized and turns off most of time, when I log into hyprland. I got it to work from time to time, but this problems is also not fixed for me yet. Steam also wouldn't launch games properly. I will definitely keep trying to fix it, but i3 with x11 just works once properly set up. I really hope that in the future there will be better support for NVidia with hyprland once the new drivers go into the standard repository. If you have similar problems and have found a fix I would be more than thankful if you could share your solution and try it out :D

Hyprland is crazy when it comes to customization or having fun with configuring. I saw that sway is also powerful and offers many things that hyprland can't offer in windows management. It also uses too small GPU memory. On the other hand, hyprland relies on GPU, otherwise it doesn't work at all. Even kitty uses GPU, which is annoying for me. Unfortunately, I found one bug on both of them, swaylock(it doesn't matter who configured it) works accidently and makes my cpu up to over 80 celcius degree. That's why I prefer stability and I don't use WMs. Because I can't rely on them

If you want, I think you can convert KDE into tiling window manager like hyprland or sway. I would rather stay in KDE because of its excellent support of XWayland apps on fractional scaling, and helps you to tinker a lot of things on GUI, such as if you unplug your AC adapter, you can tell KDE to use power saver mode, run custom scripts, use certain level of brightness and much more! Even tough GNOME is touch friendly, I use KDE and nowadays KDE touch makes more sense than GNOME.

i did that with my kde thanks to "Krohnkite" (a kwin script). I have a hyprland session too that took hours to set up but in the end i prefer my set up on kde: Some things "just works" (ex: swap to dedicated GPU on my laptop when needed) without having to install more stuff and tinkering with it. Of course kde is heavier but if you are on a modern pc, you wont feel really the difference and with one or two plugins you get the same animation/window decoration as Hyprland (no title bar, border with custom color around the actif window, etc...)
