This slideshow is an introduction to Tlingit sounds using words. It is intended to provide a student a means to practice making the sounds necessary to speak and understand the Tlingit language, and also to introduce a set of nouns. Please pay close attention to the symbols so you will reconize them later in reading and writing, and focus on the word and the image, not on the word and the English word.

Lance, I saw the Haida Nation flag on the screen and clicked to find this...Tlingit video. Just saying. Anyway: I am Haida, Tlingit, Tsimpsean myself. I have taken Haida language classes. Wonder if someday I'll honor my grandmother with a lesson in Tlingit. ;-) As I am doing at this moment! Yay!

Yeah, I am Haida as well, so that was the best flag I could find! In later handouts I changed it to an Alaskan flag just in case there was a problem with it. Háwʼaa Dee!

You have a very soothing voice. This was very interesting, thank you so much for sharing this. I don't yet have the muscle memory to form these sounds very well but I'm glad for the practice.

this is so beautiful and different from everything I have ever learned or tried to pronounce! Thanks. I'm so sorry I will never be able to hear the real people speaking the language but this was sooo inspiring. You have a calm, almost therapeutic voice....

How does one verbalize the difference between yaak 7:18 and yaakw 9:17? My untrained ear cannot tell the difference by the sound.

Could someone please provide the ipa for the underlined x. It sounds like a uvular trill but from the pattern it looks like and ejective velar fricative.

It’s uvular with the line, velar without.
