Nakakoshiki Island
It is located in the center of the Koshikishima Islands, facing the Kashima area of Shimokoshikishima across Imuta Seto in the southwest direction. Most of the area is forest and wilderness, with a series of mountains centered on Mt. Hoshiyama and Mt. Kinokuchi, which are about 300m high, and the terrain is acidic and there are few flatlands. The northeastern cove is a good natural harbor and has been a busy trading hub since ancient times. Currently, there is Hirara fishing port, which is used as an evacuation port, and the Hirara village has opened up around it. Construction of the prefectural road Kurohama Suishuka Line, which began in 1980, was connected by two bridges between Tira and Intermediate and opened in March 1993, making this long-held dream a reality. The island is also known for the wild lily, which produces large white flowers in the summer. Additionally, the Kanoko Fault, which can be seen in the northern part of Nakakoshiki Island, has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 geological structures. In 2020, Koshiki Ohashi Bridge was completed across Imuta Seto, connecting it with Shimo Koshiki Island.
Shimokoshiki Island
It is located in the East China Sea about 45 km west of the Satsuma Peninsula, and the northern part of the island is the former Kashima Village, and the southern part is the former Shimo Village. The land is steeper than Kamikoshikijima and Nakakoshikijima, and there are steep cliffs and strangely shaped rocks, especially on the west side. The Himeura Group from the Cretaceous period, which dates back approximately 80 million years, remains on the island, and fossils that appear to be the teeth and part of a rib of a carnivorous dinosaur have been excavated. In 2013, Japan's first fossil of a ceratopsian was discovered, and in 2013, the fossil of a hadrosaur was discovered, attracting attention. The main industry is fishing, and the amount of fish caught, such as yellowtail and yellowtail, is one of the largest in the prefecture. It is also the only place in Kyushu where deep ocean water is taken. The masked god, Toshidon, who appears in the village on the night of New Year's Eve is famous, and was designated as a national important intangible folk cultural property in 1970, and registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2009 (in 1971, other Expanded registration to include local events). In 2020, the Koshiki Ohashi Bridge was completed on Imuta Seto, which separates Nakakoshiki and Kamikoshiki Islands, connecting the three islands by land. The Koshikijima Islands will become even more integrated in terms of tourism and lifestyle. A variety of initiatives are being promoted under the slogan, "There is only one koshiki."
