I think Family Summon exists as a compromise between "you have to travel everywhere" and "I want to play with my close friends". Which I'm totally cool with, as long as the summon feature is highly limited to a number of players and has a decently long cooldown, which it sounds like it will hit these marks as you can only summon "family", a.k.a. a group of maybe 6-8 (?) players who have all marked themselves as being part of the same "family". I'd also like it if they put restrictions on what you can carry with you while doing a Family Summon. Maybe you're not allowed to transport raw or produced crafting mats.

They want to control materials for region specific, and materials that need to be transfered between nodes need to go through caravan system, So only logic i see is to make fast travel with empty inventory and the cost has to be of some sort.

@ericv738 Жыл бұрын
Actually, I was being facetious before, but I'm going to have to change my perspective on this - Family Summon shouldn't exist, period. I think if a player wants to play with their friends, they need to be smart and coordinate together to play the same race to start off in the same zone. If not, then prepare for a journey that could take you a LONG time. And what a few others have said - There are still better ways of quicker travel that aren't literally teleportation. Like airships, boats, ferries, caravans,... whatever. Teleportation shouldn't be in the game and IF it is, it should only be acquirable by the most powerful wizards or something.

Hows about making new friends in the game? My WoW friend list was massive in BC & WotLK. It's been irrelevant since that time but it was a godsend for creating reliable heroic groups back in the day if guild members were not available.

We have this down fine in EVE, you just set up base where you want to be for a while, and you move your stuff when you want to be somewhere else. Sometimes you go for a day out in something cheap and just die and respawn back at your base. Generally friends set up in similar areas, and on the rare occasions where you want to go do something with a group of people on the other side of the universe, you all get to have a comfy catchup chat in comms for a half hour.

If the MMO is deep enough, good enough, it is all you and your friends will be talking about. You'll make plans, travel ahead of time in preparation to meet up, etc. If one of us was planning on moving out of an area we would bring it up to the others. We stayed coordinated. Besides, it's not like there were _no_ fast travel options in old MMOs, they just cost you something and required another player to help. In old EQ there were always wizard and druid players offering ports for tips. It was good money for them and it would help you clear anywhere between 25%-75% of the distance you needed to travel. The point is you couldn't just ignore everyone else on the server and click on a rock to be moved to the other side of the world for free like you can in modern MMOs.

Id love it if ONLY a few choice classes had unique methods of Getting around faster. ALA old Everquest. Wizards and Druids had a few unique "gates" they could open portals too, but it cost them money (the componets needed) to do so. While Bards could play a fast travle song that made everyone run speed to tripple. As with Shamans and the Spirit of wolf spell. ( I remember sitting outside of Keynos, giving out SoWs for tips. Id love this kind of fast travle system to make a come back, where you have to ask a player for the ability to fast travle, and not just have 70+ portals in the city hub that anyone can use for free. Also, you dont need fast travle if you dont disign the quests to be all over the flipping world from each other! keep the quests and quest givers in the same zone and noone needs fast travle. honestly its also the only reason people use them. because noone wants to waste their 2 hours of play time a night spending 40 mins of it just running to the quest and back!

I like this idea. Having certain jobs that can provide portals to places of interest for component costs (that arent cheap) would be great. All they would need to do is make it so that you can't warp to places like world boss areas and such, maybe limit it to cities which are a certain level.

One thing I do want to see is that flying mounts can always accompany at least a single passenger. Reason being in a massive open world pvp setting with limited and important players having flying mount access it seems natural to give them a "bodyguard" passenger to bring along; surely any dragon, or griffin could bear the extra weight. Log Horizon the MMO anime made me think of this

Travel time matters. I just really hope they include some home-stone of any type. Maybe it only works for your own house and you must be logged out for at least an hour or so - or just put a 12h cooldown on it or whatever. Exploring is fun, but knowing that you have to end your exploration at 20h because you need to walk home for 3 hours if you wanna log out in your home for the next day just sucks balls.

The original EverQuest (during the EverCrack era 1999-2001ish) was like this and it was the best MMORPG experience I've ever had. The dumbing down of MMORPGs and making them more convenient and easier has ruined the genre. Things like portals everywhere, looking for group lists, maps that work like GPS (I used to draw out my own to keep track because there was no GPS map system in early MMOs), mobs that won't chase you down once you aggro them....all modern MMORPGs are cookie cutter.

I remember in Ragnarok Online the acolyte classes could save up to 4 different warp locations at a time just by standing at any given spot in the world. They would often sit in major cities and offer to warp players to points of interest for a fee. Sometimes there was a troll who would warp people to a location that they would be trapped in or insta die, so it had its flaws... but I did like that.

As someone who has played a fair amount of BDO, the dreamhorses are as close to fast travel as you can get. I don't think it would take much more than 10-15 minutes to go from Ghrana to Valencia. I love the autopathing as it gives me time to check the status of my farms, workers, inventories, and marketplace. By the time that I do all that stuff, I am to where I want to be. One of the reasons that I quit playing SWOTR was that it was a jogging sim. I loved the story and characters, but I just reached a point where I could not stomach another 10 jog to talk to someone who gives me 3 lines and then I jog for 5 minutes to the next npc or whatever.
@jeremyn4397

Your complaint about SWOTR is so valid. Its the same problem I had with FFXIV. I hated how you would run to an NPC for them to tell you where a meeting of heros is, go to that meeting place just to get a few lines of dialouge about another meeting point, go to that meeting point to rinse and repeat... so boring.

yup, *some* form of *limited* fastish travel is fine, even required for the game not to become a walking simulator, but having to actually travel most of the time if you want to reach a location far away is good shit. maybe even give us some public transportish mechanic where we can travel with others to the same location but proper autopathing is I think a must if we’re removing most fast travel options, a gameplay loop involving holding W for 30 minutes would get old very quickly. some smartly implemented autopathing (maybe you move a bit slower if autopathing vs holding W) sticking to roads and paths instead of a line straight through mountains and shit would do wonders for playability

Flying (for long distance) is killing world as teleportation, because you do not interact with world, if you not add flying monsters, and still is disconnect land and air, adding a lot to devs to make mechanic between, fighting, limiting etc.
@Arrow333
@Arrow333 2 жыл бұрын
If you manage to make the area around you interesting and fun enough and turn the travel into an adventrue by itself, then I think it is easy to adapt to having only very limited fast travel options. As GW2 player I get a whole different game experience, if you make the conscious decision of not using all waypoints and teleports (as long as there is no other way to get to your destination) - because you will get nudged into all the events happening on your way to your destination and maybe discover interesting stuff while trying to use a new shortcut. Of course you can still decide to ignore that stuff, but having these options is much better than autopathing and basically treating the game as a movie for the 5-10 minutes of travel time.

I like how instant travel is technically possible in the game, but you legit gotta get a scientific metropolis for it to work and even that is extremely limited to it's Zoi. I don't have anything against fast travel exactly, just I like that if you want apex convenience, then you kinda gotta work for it, and give up on other things like auction houses, which is in itself a major convenience. In the end, when it comes to me at least, I don't mind long travel times so long as I feel it was worth the trip, either because of the journey or the destination.

I may be an exception but I did not mind traveling in New World...because when I headed off somewhere I always got sidetracked by some mining node...some special flower...another node...and a couple of trees....and...where was I going again? EVE Online, while having FTL travel still doesn't really have "fast travel" either. Instant force projection would completely break the game as the supply chains and military convoi travels are a core part of the game. It takes hours to go from one side of the galaxy to the other, and it's not safe at all to do so alone. The one convenient form of travel I do support in MMO's is "summon-a-friend". Real Life happens, and if your friend with who you always play with logs on way later than normal and you happened to travel very far, it would be annoying to have to wait for him to join you. Make it on a special timer, and restricted to people of your guild/family/whatever system. Or even a type of WoW Warlock summon to get that one healer you've been looking for to finally get that dungeon party going.

It just makes the time you have to waitbetween quests longer without filling it up with extra content. In this game however no fasttravel will be very inzresting for a pvp player like me. I guess giild will want to def mulriple nodes and depending on the distance between them theres some intresting strategical joice swith who defends what node etc when for exampme multiple nodes get attacked. Or u could fake attack a node, make players go there to def. Then your main army attacks another node so far away that they cant reach it in time to defend it. You should try Albion online. They also limit fast travel sorta. More or less just in the 'black zone' where the travel matters a lot. Also on an other note if you only just started playing Archeage you missed a lot of the 'good times'. Back at the end of 2016 Archeage came out with 3.0. Steven and my self both started on one of the new fresh servers. Steven played West and I was East but he had to hire my guild to do things for him, his guild was good but my guild had been with each other for a long time and we knew how to zerg fight(zvz). So he offered us a lot to give him a castle and we did. He also funded us a nation as part of our deal. I am not sure if you can make your own nation in Archeage anymore? The last time I played AA the game was so bad to what is use to be... dailies to get scrolls or something for gear to upgrade it? Wtf so stupid, it use to be a sandbox. Now it is dailieage, at server reset you get in the reset raid do all the quests over about an hour and you are done. To me this was not good so I stopped playing less then a month after joining that.

Ashes has fast travel between nodes but limits being able to teleport from one side of the map to the other. Friends and family summoning and Science nods can port within their areas of influence so there is going to be some planning involved to get from point A to B based on distances. As for flying being limited to a very select few, I find that kind of problematic, but the game is far from completed and things are subject to change. Steven did hint at flying being something you can acquire for a limited time through the use of a consumable rare item drops so we will be able to gain access to flying but not full time. Only a select few people will have permanent anytime access to it 24/7. We will have to see how this plays itself out.

The last two MMOs I've played had fast-travel everywhere, and thus, did not have mounts in the game, as there was really no point or need. A true example of no fast travel was Ultima online when it launched the only way to travel was on foot and bolts or via the screw Yasmin game system that you had to watch the phases of the moon in and I don’t member how you actually did it but it was a pain in the ass to get from one Margate to another any require moonstones in and I mean it was not convenient at all. Most people just ignored it and ran or sailed to the continent they wanted to go to. This made PK in dumbasses way more convenient because you could just stand out a road at a bridge and kill them when they ran by

This is the issue with the argument of content, lets be real about Ashes of Creation, there is no gameplay loop or even a hint of one shown yet, so at this point it has a lot to prove before comparisons can be made. What was said is not the same as what its going to do, we can hope pvp exist and travel will be of the level of FInal Fantasy XI where it literally took you 30 minutes to get to another zone you would have to be to grow your character. My biggest concern rolling into the 6 year mark is the fact the most they got right now is a failed Battle Royale that was very basic and was a waste of resources, a pre alpha where only die hards said it was good, and no actual timeline in getting things done.

I'm not too old school of an MMO player but I was so excited to hear about the flight path feature. It's one of my favorite modes of fast travel, purely because of the views you get so see. When I played WoW I had specific paths that I liked. I would often choose slightly longer routes to walk if I knew I'd get a chance to take a short hop on one of my fave routes just because I enjoyed the view.

The answer to your question is very simple. Travelling is downtime when you are not playing the game. So Ashes will work if - 1: The nodes levelling up with the players, means people don't _have_ to shift zones to level, or quest. 2: If you do have to travel, say to do PvP, end game raids or world bosses, the rewards are sufficient to merit the travel.

Fast travel and teleports are a necessity at some point. People who play also have jobs and a life. Not even 20% of the player base will be people without a life who can spend 2 hours or 3 a day just moving from point to point

GW2 fast travel just shows how having the option to blip around make the world less significant and much smaller. All the world boss events end up be on time scripted zerg rotations. It's not that there is a lack of content but you limit the opportunity player to player chance interactions. Since I've been playing Vanillaplus private wow server, it's evident how much bigger and more alive the world environment feels when travel has elements of time gating and expense. flight paths, ships and trains. Summon stones, hearthstones, lock summoning and mage warps...it just makes the environment more believable. Clicking a flightpath and getting whisked away in real time gives you a moment of respite to just sit back...or grab a snack/drink and most likely take a piss. that you don't get from modern hyper convenient MMOs

I think that convenience and fast travel can exist in ashes of creation and it don't need to be so hardcore like past mmorpgs, just find the mid ground to balance the convenience and fast travel won't be too convenient and cost nothing, for example family summon CD 24 hours(I set 24 hours because I define family system is for real friends or family not for guilds or communities) at least and the more distance between you and family member you summoned the more CD time take. And personally I don't like limit how many things you can carry by item weight, unless it connect to character's status like RO, but still I want to say in today people probably won't have that much continuous time to sit in front of PC and play a mmorpg have too much realistic relate detail setting, I think lowing the entrance maybe a wiser decision.

weight is pointless in bdo, you can put all of your trashloot on your horse and then put it back into your inventory when you leave, even if you are overweight as long as it's not in your horses inventory then your horse will move at full speed. There's also storage maids that are handed out like candy sometimes that let you transfer items to storage while farming, or even transfer stuff from the marketplace so you don't really have to prepare much once you've played the game for more than a month. I also believe fast travel is incredibly important to open world content. Archeage depends on fast travel for world events and the ability of players to group in one place quickly for some large event is part of what makes an mmo feel alive imo. bdo feels dead if you're not in a town, there's not much rewarding mmo-like content outside of node wars and you only see players every now and then while grinding. It's one of the reason I hate games without fast travel even though i have 1.5k hours in bdo, due to no fast travel some non weekly world bosses wont even be killed but rather you just have to fight it till it despawns for half rewards even though the game technically still has a substantial playerbase.

About BDO they add infinite potions, but they required even 100h+ to get them, so not many would do. They in last patches change weight of many items, so make easier to carry more. I think biggest reason why lack of fast travel is not big problem in BDO is hub system, you have different regions and with your gear, level and quest most time stay in same region, and make main city your home base. For world bosses most people use alts, because you don't have do much dmg to take loot, and RNG make it not worth going there with main, and they block PVP (personal and guild) at time of bosses spawn, because it only make less people going to bosses, few have fun, and most hate it. But I think you can make game so you fight for bosses, but I don't think attacking at random time would be great idea in today world, people would have alts to watch and some would put few pc to watch all in same time. Today biggest problem with BDO is lack of progression at end, or more what it gives, because when player with top gear losing to random soft cap gear player (month of playing) because he don't practice pvp.... why you want put time in better gear? Best money you get from monsters where you can kill in week of playing... And skipping leveling process is worst thing for new players, because so many complaining about taking to Node Wars (guild vs guild fight for regions) so you skipping most world. eg at start killing one mob gives you few lvls you get free (from quest) gear, so you braindead pushing to "end game". I think Eve Online have better system for this, where you after one week can play in biggest battles, but you have specific role and is not doing dmg, it is to help others to do dmg, slowing down enemies, jamming the warp drive (which required specific ship, which do not do dmg, but have bonuses to this electronic warfare) so you role in battle is important, even you don't be top dmg dealer or break enemies lines, but this making new players worth for top guilds (corporations) and you don't have make they progress in levels faster (lvling is different to because is passive in real world time, you only select skills, and some items make it faster, but you focus on making money, because you losing your ship when is destroyed, which making that top skill players sometimes want cheap ship, because they don't want to lose a lot of money, or they don't have it to lose, but for RPG is not best system because unique loot is part of you character, not as ships which are only use to fight). So MMORPG games could look for similar system in big battles, maybe you don't do biggest dmg, but you drive sige weapon, or something similar, important, but don't required this person to have great gear.

There's quite a few MMOs that don't use fast travel e.g. BDO of course, Ark Survival, Conan Exciles, Elite Dangerous and all do quite well. Sure there must be others.

I have been playing WoW since the beta, WoW never really felt immersive... Then GW 2, BDO, Star Trek online and SWTOR came out and WoW really felt fake. Now to NW, the world actually feels immersive and alive, at least for me the mobs make sense, and I personally dont need 60 types of enemies... But that's just me. And now about Ashes, I believ it's going to be a beautiful world that feels immersive and it's going to be my main MMO.

well these monster coin events are a unique one to talk about. We have a clear "description" of what they are but... really who knows? It's fun to speculate what they will be but ultimately until we start seeing them ingame... it's a wild card :)

This shit needs to be old school. Exploring the world, crafting, leveling all needs to be slowed down IMO. People forgot about that first M in MMO. Get rid of group finder/raid finders, limit fast travel, make dungeons difficult. Hell, even put xp /item loss in on death, Make shit matter. I've been playing some wow private servers and it is such a fucking train wreck. I work 55-60 hours a week and I want this stuff knowing full well some lucky NEETs living the dream are going be "better". I can't remember the last time I played a game until I was on the verge of passing out and went to bed excited to get up and start playing again.

As a person who likes mmo's but have a limited time frame. Like an hour a day. No fast travel. No play, walking for 45 mins and doing 1 quest is no good. Even 15 min auto run, I need to progress, if it is goes to slow I will not play it.

I don't think AoC would be an ENDGAME type of mmo, I've seen it in some videos but it seems like reaching the max lvl would take you at least 2 months if you're playing casual and more than a month if you're playing it for 4-5 hours a day. I honestly like this format as a casual player myself. I played NW and seeing all the 60's like they're rocks is not just as impactful as I remember in the old days. Although, tbh, with all these streamers and what not, a lot of people would probably reach max lvl in a month. Also, if you can be flagged everywhere in the world, it would be terrible if there is such a big lvl gap between casual and hardcore players. Just imagine them camping all the boss sites and farming sites. anyway, if you know josh strife, i linked a video which tackled this topic too. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbh8hc6ovbupqYk.html

@BlueFlameWolf
@BlueFlameWolf 2 жыл бұрын
pvp is on all the time but there is still a flagging system for consensual pvp. If you are someone minding your own business, with no interest in pvp an not flagged, an someone comes along an kills you for no reason, the person that killed you will gain corruption. The corruption system is there to help deter griefing an kosing.

I completely disagree with your assessment of leveling being a focal point. Obviously endgame is king in the MMO world and that's fine, but some of us enjoy leveling alts and leveling in general. I won't tough it out through a garbage leveling process for the promise of better endgame. I totally agree that instantaneous travel is overall a bad thing, though. Open worlds are made to be traversed and explored.

i just hate the endgame mentality, the mmo should be FUN from level 1, and the endgame should be delayed to the maximum if existant old mmos who survived, did it by having REPLAYABILITY and ENDLESS FUN PROGRESSION Tibia, Ragnarok, RuneScape unfortunaly Devs tend to strongly ignore replayability, which is the most important trait to keep a LONG LASTING mmo.
