I’m a big fan of gk and hartke too. I’ve been using their amps for years and they served me well. I use to own a gk 700rb myself. It was an awesome amp. Another bass amp brand I like is peavey. Especially since I’ve been playing through a friend’s rig at open jam nights. His rig was an old school peavey bass amp through a genz-Benz 2x15 cab. It sounded awesome. It did at one point inspired me to get a peavey bass amp. I may or may not get a peavey max bass combo. But I’m thinking about it. Besides that, I still like gk and hartke amps

For me, nothing beats an Ampeg SVT through an 810 cab. It's not practical, and I have a smaller cabinet for playing live. But at home, I exclusively play through my 810. It's hard to explain what makes it better. I've heard it described as "pushing air." But I think it's not just the volume of air you're moving. It's having the top speakers so much higher off the floor. It means that even if you're standing up, a speaker is close to your ear. I've also learned over the years that I prefer 10-inch or 12-inch speakers to 15. They're just "tighter" sounding. My gigging cabinet is a 212.

I remember that when my 200 watts Yorkville combo wasn't enough anymore, I went straight for the Ampeg SVT-4 Pro. Thanks to its dual power channels I could connect to any combination of bass cabs I found on stage. I always let other band's bass players use it during their show if they wanted, and I received a lot of good feedback about it. Its not easy to carry, so I once thought about selling it for a lighter one. But when I connected my bass to it once again, I was convinced that I should keep it. That power, that tone... !

My teeny-tiny rig now is a Fender Rumble 30 v2 and Line 6 Pod Studio UX1 with Takstar HI 2050 headphones. Totally dig it as a budget home rig. And now I feel kinda lacking a physical guitar amp, since I've started guitar lately. Sooo, I totally agree that feeling and hearing your tone in the room makes playing way more satisfying.

I've been using 100w 15" combos for years. I went from a Fender M80 to an Ampeg BA-115 (the tiltback cab), to an Acoustic B100, back to a Fender BXR...I eventually tried running the Ampeg and Fender BXR simultaneously to get more volume, and it was less than stellar with a full band at practice. You could tell the amps were being pushed to the limit. I wanted to find the SVT sound...I still do. What I ended up doing was trading my Ibanez BTB 6 string (My one and only bass "because it does everything") for the Fender Rumble 500, and several of those previously mentioned amplifiers for a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz V.

Awesome video, Patrick 😎🤘🏻🎸 I personally like using my amp live. I currently use a hartke bass head and a gk 1x15 cab. I got a pretty killer sound with this setup. Especially with my effect pedals. I use to use 4x10 cabs in the past, but later started using 1x15 cabs. I like how big, warm, and aggressive 1x15s provide. It especially shines with overdrive. It gives it a thick heavy growl to it. Even though I still like 4x10s for its punch and clarity, I’m really hooked on 1x15s. Best of all, my rig is pretty light. As for digital modeling amps, I have done ampless recordings a lot and have done few ampless gigs before and I’ve actually had positive experiences with that. I usually go ampless when I record(especially when using my stomp boxes) and I get some great tones out of it. As for live, I can go either with an amp or go ampless as long as I get to use my stomp boxes. But truth be told, I like using my amp live much more. Especially since I’m use to using my amp at a gig. Other than that, this is a great video.

1) Great first name. 2) I started on a little Crate 1x8 10 or 15 Watt little combo with a Washburn XB200 and soon after a Zoom BFX-708 , then bought and sold more amps (and basses) than I can remember until I got to college. 3) THEN, my relationship with amps got COMPLICATED, because I started learning, playing then gigging on bass guitar AND double bass, the latter which introduces a whole different need for amps and cabs! I got a chance to play through 2 standout examples - an SWR Silverado 4x8 combo and a Walter Woods amp with a Euphonic Audio Wizzy cab. These both sounded STELLAR for upright and electric, so I started on my journey - now with my EA iAmp 800, EA Wizzy M-Line (great for lower volume gigs), Markbass Little Mark II, 2 Peavey Headliner 112 (discontinued, budget 1x12s that are FANTASTIC), and a locally-made high-pass filter + piezo preamp in a pedal-sized case used in conjunction with an A/B pedal (for my doubling gigs). And now when I need to travel a bit lighter, I go DI with a Laney Digbeth preamp pedal. I'm looking to get an HX Stomp in the near future. 4) That Audio-Technica ATM250 mic sounds IMMENSE and DETAILED for micing bass cabs! 👏

I love my Trace Elliot AH 250 Mk V which I bought in 1988 - played in a 2x15 - unfortunately it handles not very well modern active 5 string basses - so I help myself with a Trace Elliot Transit B in the effects loop of the amp. It's not the same but it works well. I have of course other amps - but since I don't care about tubes and overdriven sounds I have not found anything else that would make me want to change... If Trace would overhaul the Mark V Series and reissue it I would buy one immediately! - This time ofc a 1000W head! 🤘🤘

These days I'm primarily a straight from the board player (current pre-amp is the Ampeg SGT-DI). That being said, there is just something to the air movement and being able to FEEL the bass coming out of the amp. The rig I own right now is a Peavey MiniMax 600 going into a 4x10 and a 1x15. The best I've ever played, though, was the classic Ampeg SVT into an Ampeg 8x10. I got to play through that at a show using their backline, and it's one of the driving reasons I still say I want to own that rig one day--then I pick up an SVT head and remember why I haven't bought one. On a complete side note, where did you get the t-shirt you're wearing in the video?

I switched to helix a few years back and loved it. I’m a utility type player I can play electric/acoustic/bass. So I thought helix was a wise choice covers all grounds. I’ve loved it thus far until I started playing bass in a band full time. I could get any tone I ever wanted with it. But it in no way shape or form feels like I have a amp behind me. You just don’t feel the notes like you do with an amp.

This is probably obvious to anyone who's played both guitar and bass for a while. But, as a guitarist who just started learning the bass, I'm learning to love bass amp heads. Because a great sounding bass amp head, like say an Ampeg V-4b, or Fender Super Bassman also do double duty as a great AND super loud guitar amp. Even the relatively cheap Ampeg Micro-VR absolutely rips as a clean high headroom guitar amp that can wobble your knees. And it's a different type of sound to your usual guitar amp head, the bass is so deep and dclear, and the sound has breakneck dynamic range and clean headroom to 10,000 ft. And then another thing, even more than guitar, you can get away with a not so expensive but good enough bass (Squier, Sire Marcus Miller etc) so long as the bass amp and cab are good sounding, it will sound really good AND you don't even really need much in the way of pedals. Maybe a touch of compression (Mooer Yellow Comp sounds nice), and a touch of drive (Earthquaker Plumes/Blumes sounds great), and sometimes use an octave/fuzz (KMA Queequeeg 2, EHX Green Russian Muff).

Just got My QC and love it so much. makes live so easy on the road. Mostly playing in a band just using in ears, no amps on or besides the stage. But just had a gig last Saturday with a nother band where the guitar player is insiting on using his 100 W Tube Head and his 4x12 Cab. Kinda Understand it ;-) So I had to use the backline of the club. It was an Ampeg svt 4-pro and a 8x10 Fridge. So I used the Amp on stage to get some air moving and the QC directly to FOH. And Oh, Boy it sounded so HUGE! I get why people still love their 8x10 even its not possible and unpractical for me to use one on the road. Sometime, I will get one my self. just to own one. :D BTW I Also own the Ashdown EVOIII 500 sepcial edition. Its an amazing amp, but its living in our rehersing space. :D

Ok Patrick, I must admit that I really enjoy your channel! So, "thank you"! However, playing a bass, amp head or cab for 10 minutes and "endorsing" a company is a lot different than actually using this equipment out on the road. How reliable is the equipment you are demonstrating for the video? After someone has bass equipment after a year of two their views can change and the pros/cons of the equipment becomes more relevant to the watch and musician. How about doing a video on that bass equipment that you had for a while and put through all the trials and tribulations over time? Which company(ies) have the best customer service? This would be VERY helpful.

I do have a few DI pedals I play with on the front end ( Tech 21 VT Bass DI, LR Baggs Stadium DI etc.. ) I get a good sound with either my 1982 Fullerton 62 RI Jazz, 1988 USA 62 RI precision with flats and or my 76 Stingray. I’ve had the giant SVT with 2 cabs.. fun at the time but not practical.. My Traynor Mark II was cool back in the day with 2 - 4/10 cabs! I was loaned a Red Marshall Super Bass Head at one time and LOVED IT! guy wanted 7000.00 at the time and I could not justify!! You can see I’ve been around the block btw: enjoyed the video
