Nice find!! I can't ever seem to catch these older gold ones on ebay, they are becoming scarce especially new (old stock) like this. I like your thermostat collection in the drawers like that. You just gave me a great idea. Mine are just in cardboard boxes in the top of one of my closets. I agree with you on the white T87's, they are just not as cool looking as the classic Gold ones. The T87 you have installed is keeping a perfect temp match with it's own thermometer, you got the level dead on!!

I have a T87F 1859 3 9324 so I assume it was built in the 24th week of 1993. The room temp indicator seems to be stuck on 72 since I know it went below that last night yet when I checked it around 3am it was still on 72 deg even though it was completely shut off. Unlike most videos I have seen my number stampings (T87F 1859 9324) are in pretty small print on the left side of the plastic base. Is there any way of fixing that bottom indicator so it will work correctly? (There has been no tampering with this thermostat it has always been used properly).

It's the terminal scews rattling because they're not screwed down yet. Also the glass tube rattles on the coil if you take off the transportation tab and knock it around.(bad).

I got sick of changing the batteries on my thermostat and bought an old mercury Honeywell.

Don't remove the mercury thermostats, they are far superior to what is made today, and left in place are not an environmental problem. They require no batteries and unlike modern thermostats almost never break and will not shut down your system in the middle of winter when you are on vacation because of a weak battery, causing your pipes to freeze and flood the place. (happened to me) The energy savings from a electronic thermostat is greatly overrated to in fact in my actual real life studies, I can detect almost no difference. As a landlord, I used to replace mercury thermostats routinely, However, after spending over a thousand dollars in cost of replacements, troubleshooting, parts and labor for techs to troubleshoot Hvac units only to discover malfunctioning electronic thermostats, I reinstalled the old mercury ones that i had on hand, and they just keep functioning decade after decade. Finally, there is no programing required which is time consuming to have to keep reprogramming them constantly for various reasons.

Hi I just had a problem with a Q539A subbase that was bought in 1995 or 1996 that caused the fan to not run when the a/c was on lots of frost on the suction line. I found the problem to be a black stuff on the -heat off cool- switch near the center of the base looks like factory applied back stuff. Clean it off and seems fine now just wonder if you or anyone else know of this substance and what was purpose. Nice video and love them old stats they last forever

hey: My T87 does not keep the temp of the house up to the temp I have it set at. Its 3 or 4 degrees short in the house. do you know what the problem could be? I was about to throw it out and install a digital one with batteries. I was surprised to find a fan club of these old thermostats, and people saying I should keep the one I have with the mercury switch. any reply would be appreciated.

I have 4 of those in gold in my house in a bag. We had 3 for heating and 1 for AC, then we replaced them all with newer programmable ones

not sure why they spray painted them gold. A very dated colour, and the paint dissolves from finger oil. The good thing is, you use fine steel wool to expose the nice taupe plastic underneath, that lasts forever.
