For me, in times of stupidity and madness, seeing a young and brilliant man playing organs and showing us interesting places gives me comfort and joy.

If I was inspired by your first visit to the Rev. George Herbert's church and its organ, I was moved to tears of joy by your return visit. As a cleric, choirmaster and singer of Herbert's poems and hymns, I was deeply moved by this wonderful combination of my favorite English poet, my favorite English organist, and this wonderful historic instrument. So delighted you have fixed the cyphers, and that your brother was able to assist you on this pilgrimage. Now in my mid 80's, I get to church seldom and sorely miss its music. You have made this Sabbath special for me. Thanks immeasurably!

It’s young talented people like Ben that make me realise that civilisation hasn’t completely died. I’m not religious at all but intelligent enough to know that these ancient churches and their music form the bedrock of our culture.

Poor, lonely organ, sitting there unloved and silent in an old church - UNTIL YOU AND BILLY ARRIVE. Nice that you could bring it alive again. That was a lovely flute sound on the middle verse of the hymn. I thought Billy would switch arms at some point, but he had an iron arm!

We had our 50th wedding celebration on 30 March 2024 and decided to give each guest a flash disk with our 50 dearest music pieces. We often communicate through music, those emotions and messages which are hard to put in words. This hymn, under the title "Tochter Zion" as well as your "How great Thou art" were included. Thank you for lifting my spirit and easing the harshness of living in this broken world. God is well pleased with your work. May love and peace be your portion.

Nobody will appreciate an Organ in the same way an organ builder will. Happy memories of life at the bench, releathering motors and reservoirs, building a console, drilling endless holes in toe board's and slider chests. Happy Happy day's. Pipe organ shops are a lot like Churches. A place of meditation and steady focused attention. I miss all my old friends on the shop floor. The banter, the laughter, a good natured bunch of lads.

Thank you for playing 'Thine Be the Glory.' My wife and I walked down the aisle to it after we were married, 43 years ago. And, as a minister in a Presbyterian Church, I've chosen it as the final hymn every Easter Sunday ever since I was ordained, almost 41 years ago.

My grandfather, whom I never met and who died in 1938, was the organist and choirmaster for St. Peter's church in Louisville, Ky., USA. How long ago those days of hope were. Rescuing the bird brings a little back.

This is what church is supposed to be, man communing with God through great beauty, and great music. Whether singly or in groups, makes no difference, as long as there is love and hope.

Somehow I'm reminded of the countless (seemingly) choir directors for whom I've sung, who, regular as clockwork, chastise those in attendance for the absence of the rest. So you are in good company, and are demonstrably human. FWIW, your percentage of viewers who are YT subscribers is one of the highest that I've ever seen. Most are in the 10 to 20 percent, with 20 percent being very unusual. That being said, I enjoy your videos very much.

King of Glory, King of peace, I will love thee. How wonderful to hear that glorious hymn by George Herbert being sung at Fugglestone 400 years later on a now-working organ. Bravo Billy! Awe-inspiring organist and brilliant storyteller, Ben has now become a superstar, playing world-class organ music in small country churches.

I've been waiting to hear the organ and find out how it was repaired. Thanks to your brother Billy for his help. As usual, you matched the music to the organ's capability. You are such a gifted organist!

Who doesn't love a happy ending? This was it. I join the liberated bird in sending you my sincere thanks. (It took me a minute or two to realize the truth of the matter when you said that the bird was freed to sing for the rest of its life. A life that might have been more prematurely shortened than Herbert's if you and Billy hadn't come along. I don't want to think about it.) Billy has an air of tranquility about him. Nary a muscle of his moved during your playing other than the ones needed for pumping. The church is peaceful, but not more so than your brother! (Commence chuckling if necessary.) I'm glad there's video of you flapping your arms to teach the bird, Ben, because I believe your channel is just about to take off. From ciphers to sweetness. Well done!

I took an Easter service in a village church which has acquired a very decent upright piano - the music for reflection after the address was the Bach prelude you played here. I used to have a recording of St Mary Rotherhithe where the sparrows nesting in the wire guards of the windows proved impossible to eliminate. All part of the unique charm of each of the parish churches of England.

I was one who had not subscribed and I actually thought I was. So got that corrected. Ben, loved this episode. As an old church organist I really enjoyed your “Thine be the Glory” so much! i was pleasantly surprised by that. little organ’s voice, so clear and lovely. it sounded like a human or angel voice now and then singing a high note that brought tears. This was a very special video . Such a contrast from the outside traffic noise to the interior peace.. The little bird. was so sweet, fragile, and so in need of rescue. , i had a lump in my throat, afraid it would not fly out the window, but stay out of reach.

Love your site. I used to play a JW Steere in Goshen CT USA from Springfield Masscsts1894. In 1974 the blower fritzed on Christmas Eve. "No problem said our Sexton who pumped it when he was a boy living across the street. He got a teenager to get behind, pulled out a brace and instructed the 30 year old organist how to operate the blower signal When organ had bellows and leathers replaced for first time in 1994 it was kept playable by pumping just in case. Thankyou. I recognize all you play and appreciate that you play without a lot of 'body English'.

I subscribed and hit the bell button when I first discovered you on KZfaq last Autumn. I love ancient sacred spaces of all kinds. I have had a love for hymns since I was a child, Thanks, Mum. 🙂 I love taking my sketchbook to places like these.

Well, I am very happy to subscribe and contribute. It’s selfish, really. I want very much to keep visiting village churches and learning about mechanical action organs, and look forward to this half hour of sweetness at the end of another week in our roller coaster world. The latest video featuring St. Peter’s, George Herbert (whose poetry I have loved for 50 years), Billy, and the fortunate bird is absolutely delightful.

I'm a young student in Sweden. I've moved to a new town and I'm studying music but unfortunately I'mbeing forced into studying only modern pop and rock music as it is a small town and there is no room for classical education. During my free-time I take lessons about every 2 weeks from the local organist here. I sometimes feel like I could be doing so much more if I wasn't doing this extra education of music I don't enjoy and very basic theory and such that I already know. I spend all of my time doing things I don't want to and that I don't have to. I don't have time for the things I want to do, but I always find time to go to church when no one else is there to practise. I have fallen head over heels in love with this instrument and I feel so lucky to have this wonderful teacher and I know this is what I want to do. I know I've found my calling. And yet I'm exhausted from all of the things I have. I don't have time for anything, I don't have time to sleep, I don't have time to cry. But when that extra flute register was added to the final part of the hymn I was nearly brought to tears. Thank you for all of your work, and thank you for inspiring me and so many others.

Imagine George Herbert the poet played the music here , wow! I well remember his poetry from my school days eons ago now. It was good of your brother to film and pump the organ, phew! bet his arm ached that night. I got chills when you started to play and then shed a tear. How beautiful the old church is and so very obviously cherished and well kept. You are quite right the church approach is so lovely, and the folk whizzing past in their vehicles are seriously missing a trick! It was as though we had all tripped back to days gone by, and it was easy to imagine the box-pews filled with honest working people and see the ladies skirts brushing the trees lining the pathway, as they walked home after the service. As always, both the chosen venue and selected music are fantastic. Not that I am a musician or expert in organs, but simply a lover of sacred music, hymns and the Holy Scriptures...the latter a real source of inspiration for the former. Such music is one of elevation, and our one way, other than prayer, to commune with the supernal while still being humble pedestrians.

Another most enjoyable video. Hailing from north of the border, I know little of hymnwriters from Wales and England. However, you caused me to look up the Rev Herbert, and what an interesting, if brief, life he had. Great pity that his church is no longer in use, but I trust that those who have visited may appreciate the building's history and atmosphere, and the God who called George Herbert to serve there.
