Is Netflix's portrayal of the Hasidic community accurate? Does it even matter? I'm Simcha, an orthodox Jew living in New York in the time of quarantine! Here is my honest reaction to the Netflix Series Unorthodox.

I’ll be frank: the REQUIREMENT that married women shave their heads makes no sense at all. Head scarves, fine. Whatever suits you. Shave your head if you like. But it seems like a brutish thing to demand of young women.

It does not say anywhere in the Torah that married women are required to shave their hair, only that they must cover it. Shaving is not a commandment, but rather a tradition that has become accepted as the norm in some orthodox communities. Most orthodox Jews, however, do not shave their hair.

@@uriel7203 If you had read the book that was the inspiration for the series, you would know that she discusses this issue in her book. Leaders in her community had very strict interpretations Talmud that led them to believe that women should shave their heads. Her grandfather did not enforce this strict interpretation. Her grandmother did not shave her head. But other men in the community forced their wives to do so. Other women shaved their heads by choice because it made summer more comfortable in a wig.

If there is a more positive story from someone within the Satmar community, they can write their own book and do their own series. There is freedom of the press and to publish. Plus, I am going to be optimistic and say people are not going to hate Jews b/c of this. I don’t hate Mormons after reading The 19th Wife or seeing a Warren Jeff’s doc. I don’t hate Catholics after seeing Spotlight (though I think the church has some house cleaning, for sure).

First of all, you can't speak for every Jewish person. You can only speak for yourself. Second, this is a story about a woman living within the Satmar community. You are not a Satmar woman. You are an Orthodox woman. The Satmar community is Hasidic, which is not the same as Orthodox. I appreciate your opinion but you can't properly give an accurate idea of whether the series got it right or wrong, since you did not live that life. Hasidism is different from Orthodox. A hasidic woman would not be filming a video and putting it on the internet, as most of them do not have technology available for personal use. The Jewish community have beautiful people and traditions. Are there negative views on it? Yes, but that happens with almost every religion. You can share light on your faith to bring it in a more positive view. But since you didn't live the Satmar life, it is hard to judge the series accurately.

Any religion can be warped and manipulated, even Judaism. I think most people with logic watched unorthodox and knew that that wasn’t normal. And doesn’t represent all Jews but it shows a realistic idea that there are good and bad people in all religions. Believing everyone that calls themselves a “jew” is good would be so false. I think unorthodox does a good job at not putting certain faiths on a pedestal. For example many think that the Jewish faith is completely incorruptible and Islam may point towards a more extreme view like ISIS. I think that it is a common idea perpetuated by some western media. All religions, like systems of power can be used to control people and we must recognise this. This is just my opinion I hold no bias.

I have not come across a religion yet that is not deeply harmful to women. I understand that feeling part of a community is important and sometimes loneliness can be too overbearing which is why a lot of people end up staying and/or joining religious groups. But staying in these communities, comes with a huge sacrifice which is your own self-respect and self-esteem, especially for women. The books the people in this religion follow are full of violence and intolerance. They are obsolete in many ways. The old and new testaments are horrible, check this out: " If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then only the man that lay with her shall die. But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.[4]" There are so many more examples of this hideous and totally immoral way of thinking, this is not the only one. Therefore, dwelling in the old testament is not an act of Christian belief, as it is no longer what brings us salvation. Salvation is only through Jesus Christ, as it is written, He "Is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can go to the Father except through Him." Contrary to your beliefs, Jesus refused to treat women as inferior. This was extraordinary during his time, as it was a cultural norm for women to be looked as less than a man. I grew up Chasidish in a community similar to Esty’s, and actually disagree that the ambience and attitudes portrayed here reflect reality in Satmar. In fact, showing everything as dingy and abusive downplays how hard of a decision leaving is. Apartments are not brown and depressing, clothing is usually Mrs Maisel style and fashionable, and there is so much warmth and joy despite the restrictions (not just grumpy invasive people). And on the other side as well - while there are some nice folks out there I’m the big world, most people are not the “angels of Berlin” shown here. I felt that the story was very one dimensional and oversimplified, with production taking many shortcuts on accuracy despite their statements otherwise. The person in this video is living in a much more liberal community and should not be commenting on this.

I personally didn't feel like the apartments or clothing were portrayed as too bland or anything, i actually really liked a lot of the pieces Esty was wearing during the scenes in Brooklyn! I especially remember her coats and they just reminded me of Mrs. Maisel fashion as you said. I obviously don't know much about the live in an orthodox community, but I think they did a good job with highlighting, that not everybody in a community like this is the same. The husband was shown to be a very sensitive guy, only a bit too young and maybe to inexperienced in relationships to understand what exactly he is doing wrong. The only one that is constantly behaving like an asshole is the other guy, but it's very clear that he is doing most things on his own accounts without the rest of the community telling him to do so. Also I have lived in Berlin for a bit, and of course not everyone is an angel or anything like that, but I think they captured the general attitude if young People living in Berlin pretty well. Obviously, Not everyone you meet is a talented musician that only wants the best for you though ;) but in general most people are open minded, come from all over the world and a lot of people are very aware of the history of the country/city itself.

She isn’t downplaying others’ experiences at all, she’s only giving her perspective. I’ve been asked all sorts of questions with people thinking MY life is like that when it isn’t at all. Many of the things that are portrayed such as the mikvah, modesty, or covering hair after marriage are absolutely part of orthodox life outside of the Satmar community and those things are being attacked which in turn affects us too. I don’t think she’s making excuses for any abuses at all, i think she’s just asserting that Estys experience represents her experience and many other women’s experiences but not all. Not all orthodox communities function the way the Satmar do and not all Satmar families function the way Estys family does. Just like not all Hindu families support arranged marriage or Muslim families support some of the things criticized about their communities. It’s all individual experience and there is good and bad everywhere

I would agree with you, but as someone who grew up Orthodox I can tell you this isn’t true. Orthodox jews aren’t isolated/separate from hasidic jews. they live close to each other, and work, go to school together, and communicate with each other often. The communities know everything about each other, even if they don’t follow the same things they are closely related. In my experience, I experienced religious abuse and awfulness even in regular Orthodox judaism

I said this on another comment. It's not my place to judge a community I'm not a part of but you have to understand that this is told from Esty's or Deborah's point view. You do have to take the show with a grain of salt since it is television. I lived in Brooklyn for many years and I knew an orthadox Jewish family and they are the nicest people I've ever met but I can see how some people may not fit in

So I will start by saying this I'm a black Caribbean man who knows nothing about your community (Orthodox Jews, Jews period) I've seen them when I lived in Brooklyn and London there is so much about your culture I want to know and understand but I feel your community is closed off and see me as an outsider but this is not just your community alone this is just about all communities if you think about it. If you're white you don't understand what I go through or if your Indian and so on and so on we all have our clicks. I felt this limited series gave me a small window into your community. Let's be clear you can find Esty's mother-in-law EVERYWHERE she's nothing new. Every culture deals with abuse period. This piece could be in my opinion a conversation starter because I believe even though our faith is different we all have similarities? When I watch I wanted to know why she had to cut her hair. I wanted to know when her husband in episode 1 woke up why he washed his hands the way he did. I wanted to know why y'all rock back and forth during prayer and the reading I had so many questions. Why can't women be educated again not the only culture that doesn't educate their women? I want to understand people more and sometimes don't tell me to read a book but talk to me like a person, I want to understand you and you to understand me that what I believe GOD really wants from his children doesn't matter what you call him if you believe GOD is even a he. Sorry to write a book I didn't come here to defend the Netflix series and I agreed with your points but there is so much we can learn and with that enjoy the rest of your day

You should really read Unorthodox - the original book version - written by Deborah Feldman (who Esty is based on). She answers many of your questions and exposes other abusive practices within the Satmar cult. As for questions about Jewish practices in general, I highly recommend the “Jewish Book of Why”.
@chaimweisberg4365
@chaimweisberg4365 4 жыл бұрын
@Leon Davis Jr i like your comment I think this is what the writers were going for. I kind of wish more comments were like yours. I don't exactly know the reason she had to cut her hair you'd need to ask someone from that community. but she does need cover he hair after marriage and that's true for not ultra orthodox jews as well, as you can see in the video above. The best reason I know for this is to keep the intimate parts of the relationship between the husband and wife. The hair is something which is beautiful and should be seen only by the husband As for the hand washing its a way to make the hands holy after the night. There are a few reasons why they are unholy is because, they touched intimate parts of your body while sleeping, and sleeping is considered 1/60 of being dead. Another reason which I like for the way the hands are washed(left right left right left right) is to start the day being centered. As opposed to the term "to wake up on the wrong side of the bed" As for the rocking back and forth thing, that's not taught its just the way people are, some stand completely still, others jump up and down. Why did Esty rock back and forth while singing?

The show was based on the author of the book Unorthodox. Just watched the making of the short series and it was said that the series was based on the period of like 15 years ago. Also they tried by all means to be authentic as possible to the author's story. The actor who played Moshe is actually an orthodox Jew from Berlin whose mother tongue is Yiddish... But the point of the series is freedom and what it really means to be free

As a Catholic, my faith and community have also had their issues, and it can be really difficult to see constant negative portrayal in the media, and to balance with the true stories and validate the pain of individuals. I'm not Jewish and honestly I felt like that most of the problemss came from two very young and naive please getting married. Etsy lacked proper biology information about her own body (which is her family's fault). Yanky didn't understand the basics of privacy and why sharing the details of your sex life with your mother is not okay. On the plus side Yanky respected Esty when she said sex was too painful. He's dealing with quite a bit of rejection from Esty. Sex doesn't come easy for them and actually Esty doesn't seem to want any affection from Yanky. There's a couple of times she pulls away from a kiss etc. Yanky does love her but it might be Esty doesn't care for him as much (at least that was my take). One of the sadist scenes was Yanky in the brothel being taught how to give different types of affection. He genuinely wanted to know to be better for her. The Berlin part was way too simplistic for Esty. She happens to come across a group of people from an amazing music school, immediately meets the professor. It's very convenient her mother supplied her with everything she needs to get German citizenship and can help her. Would Esty really be able to be well adjusted to secular life straight away? Berlin was shown as way too utopian compared to Williamsburg. I love Berlin but like everywhere it has its faults. Esty and Yanky actually could have a good marriage if they worked at it. Whether that be in New York (maybe a bit further away from the in-laws and the main community area) or Berlin (though with lots of help from Leah).

I agree with a lot of what you had said except that I think Esty and her husband were never taught about emotions and sexuality until marriage, which seems quite absurd ..it shows how oppressive the system is where young people do not explore their emotional world or sexuality. It is interesting since we take for granted that kissing and hugging and touching is natural, apparently that too has to be taught by exposure through watching movies, reading etc. It is like everything else, human beings are born with little or any instincts in compared with animals who know what to do . Human beings need to be taught how to handle intimacy and sexuality , and sadly, too often from a distorted source like porn or Hollywood sentimental comedies, both equally damaging... Esty's husband only tried to kiss her after he saw a movie and listened to a prostitutde .. I was actually surprised the prostitute spoke of face and lip connection since I think many do not engage in kissing ..or so I have heard.. Esty 's marriage was doomed to fail since Esty did not want to make her husband the center of her life, and children her only goal . Esty was seeking to fulfill her purpose in life which was not dictated by simple gender roles that place everyone in neat boxes and erase individuality. Esty is an artist who explores and is curious, not a monkey that imitates. The mother in law sadly can be found in every society and culture, I had one like that and she was not Jewish at all, just really very disrespectful of my need to do things my way, and also very overbearing and unwilling to let go of her baby boy, who was at the time 30 years old.. it is a psychological barrier that makes marriage impossible to a mama's boy. One must choose to form a bond with a woman or to stay at home with one's mother . IMHO: I have never been to Berlin, but I would be scared of Neo Nazis, crime, drunks etc. I have been to Germany, but the soft bits ,not big cities with crime and violence and racism, that I have heard is still going on in Germany.

@@queensigal Berlin is great, seriously don't write it off its a very different city to what might have been 30 years ago. Its one of the safest cities, its really diverse including Israelis who have moved to Berlin. Its a very fun young arsty city and its really green too! Lots of parks in the middle of the city. There is a whole island full of museums! I like it because its built up of different neighbourhoods each with its own vibe, Prenzlauer Berg in former East Germany is our favourite amazing restaurants (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btuPopOp1ZqzhGQ.html) and interesting shops very family friendly with a hippy vibe, Kreuzberg on the other hand has a younger crowd and has amazing turkish food and clubbing or if you prefer the nicer things in life there is Charlottenberg. In my visits I've never come across a neonazi or aware I've seen one. That would maybe be different if I was jewish or not white. I wouldn't say there is a drink problem I've not seen many drunk people in the day or evening (clubbing and night is different) people seem to drink until tipsy compared to the UK where we make binge drinking a national sport. Homelessness is a problem, high rents and a lot of people going without knowing German etc to set up a decent life. There is a weird juxtaposition of it being a very hip and its dark past in the holocaust and the cold war. Ps sorry for the long response I just love Berlin! :)

It’s a mini series, so Esty “had” to adapt quick. For sure in real life it would take longer. And she was lucky her mother had German citizenship. @@rebeccah4201 Thank you for the long answer. Here is one in retyrn: I just had a man urinate at the entrance to my building in Tel Aviv tonight .. I realize i freak out easily .people here have no respect for public space so i am thinking maybe i will explore possibilities abroad ..having pets though limits this and the corona crisis.. TV and movies and novels paint a picture which is different in reality . The real woman behind unorthodox is not as attractive .IMHO. the actress who played her is very talented abd expressive .Real Debra looks boring .Berlin does look colorful but so does New York outside the ultra orthodox ghetto. USA has so many amazing places without the history .for good and bad.. I can not imagine how an American could prefer Germany to living in the diverse USA. There are so many cool places. I loved New Mexico New England and have never explored nature reserves.. Just because of the history and language barrier Germany is a challenge though if you grow up with Yiddish i can imagine it would be easy. I had lived in Europe and was assumed American due to my background there which was probobly more difficult than jewish .. I think in hinsight i would not tell anyone i was Israeli and also i think i would have focused more on work and avoided all discussions on politics and last but not least avoided alcoholics like the plague .wish i had a cat instead. At the moment i dream of travel and Berlin would be a place to visit so thank you for the description .i have to let go of the past and enjoy the coffee and cake and art.! Life is hard with holding prejudgements . Being Jewish doesnt define me or anyone but so many people get caught up in sterotypes sadly . Sometimes i wish Israel would have chosen a different flag-a lion of Judea or a dove holding an olive branch anything but the constant reminder of religion. In Yoga the star of David is the heart chakra but in history it is a symbol of being persecuted as a minority. I think lots of Israelis have holocaust complexes despite never having been close to it. I do wish it were possible to forget for the sake of mental health. History does not define peoole who havd had nothing to do with it . I really dislike the idea the middle east conflict is fed by all three large religions and of course Russia and USA political interests. Why cant humanity be free of violence and oppression ? Been reading Hemingway. His obsession with drama didnt work out at the end .. But he did appreciate cats.

There are a lot TV shows and movies portraying religion as bad and evil. I think it creates a lot of negativity towards religion from people who has no or very little knowledge on theology and philosophy. But you very scarcely find a show that portrays secularism as insane - living immorally with no foundation. Would be interesting to see a show that’s quite the reverse: A boy grows up in an atheist family, finds God, has to read the Bible in secret and decides to leave his family and friends behind to become a Priest/Pastor/Rabbi. My family is secular and I’m religious. It ain’t easy being the black sheep (or white sheep hahaha).

I felt like the part about the Mikvah and menstrual period seemed like sh would have known all about this, from hanging out with other Jewish women, they would have at a bare minimum discussed it. The Passover kitchen foil , okay it seemed like overkill with the foil, but definitely my sister did a similar thing, so it seemed mostly normal to me. I think the head saving seemed extreme but, she could have done less severe hair cut and got a fashionable wig they are available. There are some choices on that front. The orthodox guy that was decadent, I would hate to believe that an Orthodox Jew or secular Jew acted in an immoral and unethical way, to me I at least feel like the basic concept is to act and be at a higher moral and ethical level meaning be a better human being and set a positive example for others quietly follow a decent compass.

As an orthodox Jew who is not of either the Lebavich or Satmar community but has very close family members of both. I can say with conviction that just because we aren't of the same community doesn't mean we are uneducated. And please consider the fact that it is more likely that a Netflix television show that was created for entertainment's sake, where the writer admitted to making everything up in the present setting of the show, is less accurate than the many Orthodox Jews' real-life experiences and knowledge.

This Netflix show was made after the book Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman. It's a true story and not a complete fake just for entertainment purposes. The makers of the series were also really transparent about the parts where they wandered off from the actual book. Plus, there is a "making of". The book tells the story from Deborah's point of view and I assume there must be at least some truth to it.

@@mariaschinz515 Totally! There is definitely truth to the story and the show was made more generalised in order to be more relatable. The only reason why we as a section of the spectrum of this religion are somewhat against this show is not because of it being negative and therefore try to disprove the facts in the show; rather we are more aware of the fact that there are zero Western shows that reflect the good side of Orthodox Jewish life. So people are led to believe that if it's not represented that it doesn't exist - leading people like me to get concerned looks when walking around leading a normal life if I'm with someone like my father (an Orthodox Rabbi).

This lady's points are valid. Let's remember this was not a documentary. It was a personal story of Esty's journey to search for her mother, her own identity and her creative spirit. It was a story which could spring from many different ethnic and cultural background, universal in many ways and definitely Feminism. I think for most viewers, with any degree of knowledge and respect for all other cultures, it would be assessed as an interpretation.

Hi Simcha! I find your take on the series very interesting. Like you, I would really like to see a second season. I also understand that it is frustrating to only see ‘negative’ portrayal of your tradition and religion. However, I don’t think that the director is saying that any experience in a Jewish Orthodox community is necessarily oppressive, they are just portraying one experience without making any generalities. I think it is also important to portray those kind of experiences, and to me their message is universal and tends to denounce all kinds of abusive behaviours. Very happy to hear that you are content in your community, though! 😘

I've never quite understood people who were looking at arts with a magnifying glass to determine how genuinely it copies real life. It's simply not a valid argument to say that the shtreimels are fake or that the actors' Yiddish is funny. It's entirely besides the point. Also, while the Williamsburg part is largely based on Deborah Feldman's memoir, the Berlin portion is pure fiction. But even this is irrelevant. Art is representation. Does the story reflect and reveal something profound about the human existence and is it intriguing and novel how it achieves this? That's the real question about arts.

Thank you so much for your insight and opinion! I grew up in Florida & Spain and I never knew any Jewish person growing up. I now live in New York, and I certainly don't take this series to represent every orthodox community, however, I did take away that in the communities there must be a sense of community and security and I thought that was very beautiful. And that like the author, Deborah Feldman said, there's good and bad everywhere. I hope to learn more about Judaism, since growing up my parents gave a negative image of the religion- I'm unlearning this because there is a lot I think it has to offer. thanks again for sharing!

Here in the States, I live in Monroe New York, so you know what my next thoughts are going to be. The Satmar. I don’t even know where to begin. As they said in “Unorthodox,” they really are a fringe lunatic group, making enemies wherever they go. loc I've never understood how Jews and Muslims alike will say 'we believe he (Jesus) was a prophet'. A prophet would be a truth teller. Jesus said 'I am the way, the truth, and the light, no man cometh unto the the father but through me.... then he's either a liar (not a prophet) or telling the truth ( the son of God) which makes him the Messiah. So I'd really like those who call him a prophet to acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ.

In the show they're portraying a specific type of hassidic community, a very extreme one, so it's not at all like your religion. And it's based on a real woman's story, who lives on an extreme hassidic community, and who was there on the movie set to make sure everything is true to her reality. So it's not portraying a bad image of all jews. Just this perticular New York community (I forgot how it's called)

Excuse me, I also shared my thoughts of "unorthodox ", I agree with you about spreading stereotypes about Jews because sadly some people who have not been exposed to Jewish people or read enough about Judaism will generalize and see Jews as Satmar , and not realize there are all sort of streams in Judaism Having said that , however ;we need to remember that the experience of the woman Debra Feldman, who wrote a book that was the base of the Netflix series, came from a Satmar community, which is , as you must know, is VERY different than other Hasidic groups . I am not orthodox but I was close to Orthodox , modern Orthodox groups and especially Chabad Lubbavitzers who are very different. The Satmars are extreme, so are the Gur groups , and there is no reason to deny them being extremely oppressive ! . Here in Israel a great deal of suffering has been caused by our Health minister , Leichman , who is from the Gur community, that is similar to Satmar in their radical views, he let a woman who was faced with multitude complaints of sexual abuse by young students in Australia and hid her because she came from the Gur community . If we don't look at the radical extremists in a critical light, there will be much more damage caused to the victims of domestic violence, shaming, and oppression by men. We can not deny that Judaism does not treat women equally, we can not deny that Orthodox Judaism places MEN at the center of prayer, which might not seem to you discriminatory but is discrimination from any way you can look at it. Why should a person be allowed to read the Torah in the community just because of his gender? Why should the Rabbinical authorities decide every intimate aspect of people's lives ? Not everyone is comfortable with Rabbinical control over every intimate detail of their lives, and when a woman seeks a divorce in the Rabbinical court, which thank G-d I did not marry according to Judaism, there is discrimination allowing men more rights than women, the Agunot etc. The way new ideas have been treated with violence and the way we in Israel greatly suffer from the abuse of our legal system to avoid military service, taxes , housing laws and a long list of laws that the ultra orthodox insist of avoiding, even Corona virus laws that made Bnei Bark the capital of Corona because of the tradition of ignoring the zionist regime and its rules have made the Ultra orthodox unbearable and sadly people tend to generalize when a group that looks jewish insists on ignoring laws , plant a health minister who is from Gur, a radical movement that oppresses women and is similar to Satmar in forcing women to give up emotional involvement in sexual behavior, to behave without any connection to their emotions as long as the Rabbi commends, to follow orders blindly like a fascist system, which is of course very different than modern Orthodox movements that respect individuality much more but still controlling every aspect of a person's intimate life can not be seen as anything but fascist. I would not want to be examined by a Mikve worker who examines women as if they were cows to be sold , actually no one should be treated like an object, cows or women, IMHO.

How dignified do you feel in your religious practice when you're required to take a ritualic bath after your period, because you're 'dirty' otherwise?
@NoorAli-kk9xq
@NoorAli-kk9xq 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, even us Muslims we have it. It’s not dirty ness. It’s about purity and impurity. Religious Indians taking a bath in Ganga River doesn’t mean they’re dirty. It’s just a ritualistic act as respect for the divine and part of preservation of faith. And if you think something’s wrong with that well I think a newborn baby is prone to being "evil" if not baptized is a lot worse. All babies are good by nature. No human baby is born evil. Wether it’s that or any religious showers, it’s perception and preservation of one’s own faith, you don’t have to agree with it, maybe research it to understand, but don’t interpret it the way you do.

Off course, some people can live horrific stories inside this so strict communities and their values can be questioned and not understood by all, including me. Many insiders and outsiders may not relate to this practices, but we shouldn't be so quick to judge those who follow their beliefs and make the choice to voluntary being part of this communities and follow their rules. We should be ok with our own decisions because we are free to do so. Those who don't relate to this beliefs, I hope they can find the strength like esty, to find their own path, their own voice. As well as those who choose to stay and accept their religion, I hope they find the strength to integrate themselves in this so tagged and demanding world, full of judgmental people that "always know what's right and wrong". Anyway, inside or outside a community disrespect and abuse towards other people, women, man, children, hassidic, Christian, Muslim, atheist or whatever, should never be tolerated.
